2 Year 2 & Year 5 Integrated Conference Foreword Welcome to the first year 2/5 Integrated Conference in the School of Medicine at Cardiff University. The aim of the conference is for year 2 and year 5 medical students to share inspirational experiences. There are five broad themes of the conference: Elective Erasmus Intercalating Research Thriving and Surviving We would like to thank all the year 5 students who have shared their advice and experience in the workshops. 3 Year 2 & Year 5 Integrated Conference Keynote Speakers Prof Phil Smith Professor of Neurology, The Alan Richens Epilepsy Unit, Department of Neurology, University Hospital of Wales Prof Smith qualified from Liverpool in 1979 and did general medical training. As a Clinical Lecturer he wrote his MD thesis on breathing during sleep in muscular dystrophy. His clinical neurology training was in Liverpool, Newcastle- upon- Tyne and Cardiff. In 1996, Dr Smith returned to Cardiff to develop longstanding interests in epilepsy and clinical training. The Epilepsy Unit continues to grow and to evolve, with newly developed sub- specialty clinics including those for first suspected seizures and for teenagers with epilepsy. He has been Sub- Dean for Assessments in Cardiff School of Medicine since 2011 and takes great pleasure in seeing the C21 programme develop. Dr Tom Hughes Dr Tom Hughes qualified in the London Hospital Medical College and trained in neurology in Cardiff. He completed an MD about swallowing function in normal adults and in people with Motor Neurone Disease. He is a general neurologist with interests in stroke, acute neurology and disorders of bulbar function (speech and swallowing). Dr Zahir Dana Huq Dr Zahir Dana Huq graduated from Cardiff University School of Medicine in He has been doing his F1 training in the University Hospital of Wales, initially on the Neurosurgical wards. He is currently on B7 Thoracic Medicine and in April he will be moving on to Nevill Hall to join a GeneraI Surgery team. He has agreed to talk about his Elective, which he undertook in the Emergency and Hyperbaric Departments of Fremantle Hospital, Western Australia, last year and will share his experiences of medical school.

4 Year 2 & Year 5 Integrated Conference Keynote Speakers Dr Menna Clatworthy University Lecturer in Transplantation Medicine, University of Cambridge, UK Honorary Consultant Nephrologist, Addenbrooke s Hospital, Cambridge, UK Fellow and Clinical Director of Studies, Pembroke College, Cambridge, UK Menna is originally from South Wales and read Medicine at the University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff, where she also gained a first class honours intercalated BSc in Anatomy. Menna played for the Cardiff medics rugby team throughout her course and has since been awarded the rugby blues by Cambridge. She completed her professional training in nephrology at Cambridge and undertook a PhD at the University of Cambridge, investigating the role of antibody and Fcy receptors in autoimmunity and defence against infection. She subsequently obtained a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellowship which included an 18 month post- doctoral post at the National Institutes of Health, Washington, in Dr Ron Germain s laboratory. This work focused on the use of two- photon intravital imaging to examine dynamic behaviour of immune cells. Menna currently works as a University Lecturer in Transplantation Medicine and divides her time between research, teaching and clinical practice in transplantation and nephrology. She runs a laboratory focused on antibody effector function, based within the Department of Medicine wing of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. Her clinical interests are in transplantation, in particular the effects of B cells and antibody on the allograft and the use of novel immunosuppressants to target this axis.
