2 MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL "It can happen. It does happen. But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last year s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year. Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement. I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students. It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead. The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students. The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic needs of our students. I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination. Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on this path. My best wishes to all. Dr. A. Sengupta 2

3 EDITORIAL BOARD CHIEF EDITOR EDITOR ASSOCIATE EDITOR DR. ABHIJIT SENGUPTA MR.DIPANJAN MANDAL MS.MOUMITA CHOWDHURY HISTORICAL ARTICLE Justus von Liebig ( ) Justus von Liebig was a German chemist, who is widely credited as one of the founders of agricultural chemistry. He made crucial contributions to the analysis of organic compounds, and, in his early years, also published several works on the use of inorganic fertilizers in several languages. He discovered that nitrogen was an essential plant nutrient, and presented his famous Law of the Minimum which explained the effect of individual nutrients on crops. Early Life and Education: Born in Darmstadt, Germany on May 12, 1803, Justus von Liebig s father was a chemical manufacturer whose shop had a small laboratory. Young Liebig loved to perform experiments at the place. After learning pharmacy for about six months, he acquired a degree in chemistry from the Prussian University of Bonn. Liebig received his doctorate from the University of Erlangen in Bavaria in 1822 Contributions and Achievements: Liebig worked on the serious explosive silver fulminate, a salt of fulminic acid. During the same time, the German chemist Friedrich Wöhler was also studying cyanic acid. Liebig and Wöhler collaborated to establish that cyanic acid and fulminic acid were two different compounds having the same composition. The concept of isomerism was later recognized by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius. Liebig revolutionized organic analysis using a five-bulb device called the Kaliapparat. He understated the importance of humus in plant nutrition and maintained that plants feed upon nitrogen compounds, carbon dioxide from air, and some minerals found in the soil. He was the first person the invent a nitrogen-based fertilizer. Liebig also devised the Law of the Minimum. Liebig was one of the true forefathers of modern agriculture. Later Life and Death: Justus von Liebig was made a baron in He died on April 18, Liebig was buried in the Alter Südfriedhof, Munich. 3

According to statistical report in the % of total population diagonised with brain tumour. They are most common intracranial neoplasm in adults. Brain tumour originate from melanocytes, colon, kidney, and primary tumour cells. Scientists have developed various drugs for treatment of brain metastases but in year 2014 a novel approach was developed which specifically target pediatric brain tumourcells. Acid ceramidase is an novel drug that target pediatric brain tumour cells. It is suggested that medulloblastoma, pediatric glioblastma, express a significant level of acid ceramidase, which may confer radio resistance. It is developed acid ceramidase inhibitor are effective at targeting this tumour cells. It summaries patent application for management of brain tumour and metastases for past few years. After long year of research they have concluded novel concept to kill tumour cells in brain. The development of new drug delivery system that specifically target blood brain barriers, brain stem cells and tumour cells. USA FDA approved drugs with targeting moiety, daigonistic moiety or pka modifying moiety which properties can be used for the treatment The BBB is the functional and physical barrier limiting diffusion of entering this agents into the brain cells. Scientists concluded vasculature nature of BBB is the major hindrance in successful delivery of drug in CNS. 6
