Acreage under any crp is a prxy fr utput f crp and thus supply f a cmmdity is estimated. A study was made t examine; (i) share f different pulses and ilseed crps in their respective crp grup, and (ii) extent f variability in acreage f pulses/ilseed crps in districts f hhattisgarh regon. Six districts and 114 blcks f hhattisgarh regin, Madhya Pradesh have been chsen fr the study. Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur districts have 20 t 40% crpped area under canal irrigatin. Rajnandgan have abut 10% and tribal districts Surguja and Raigarh have less than 2% irrigated crp area. Secndary data n area under varius pulse/ilseed crps fr each blck have been taken frm the Office f Deputy Directr f Agriculture fr the perid f thrugh Simple cefficient f variatin ver mean acreage have been cmputed fr each crp and acreage less than 1 ha area has nt been included in the analysis. Acreage under crps Table 1 shws that 53% f ttal pulse crp area has been ccupied under Lathyrus which is a Utera crp bradcast cd in canal irrigated paddy field befure ne mnth f harvesting. Lathyrus is mst unecnmical crp. Gram is a majr pulse crp and cvers 20% f area under pulse crps. Rajnadgan district registered maximum percentage under gram. Blackgram ranks third with 12% and cvers maximum percentage in Raigarh district. Hrsegram cvers 7% and grwn mstly in tribal districts. Redgram ccupied 5% area. Linseed registered 50% area under ilseeds and its is als a Utera crp in canal irrigated area. Rajnandgan district has maximum area under linseed, where it is grwn as sle crp and registered relatively better yield. izer is anther majr ilseed crp grwn in 16% area f ilseed crps in Surguja and Raigarh tribal district. t has cmpetitin with rape and mustard acreage especially in Raigarh district. Rape and mustard has gt 14% area under ildseed crps. Grundnut registered 10% area and is grwn mstly in Raigarh district. Acerage varability Maximum and minimum variability in acreage (Table 2) under redgram has been bserved in blcks f Durg and blcks f Rajanandgan districts repsectively. Mre pprtunity t extend acreage under redgram exists in blcks f Surguja district where acreags registered less than 5% variability. B1ackgram has less than 5% area variability in all blcks f Raigarh and Surguja district. Gram registered minimum acreage variability in blcks fbilaspur district. Hrsegram has minimum variability in acreage in all blcks f Surguja and Raigarh districts. Grundnut reprted less than 5% variability in 98 and 87% area in blcks f Raigarh and Raipur district respectively. Blck f Rajnandgan registered minimum variability in acreage under sesamum and linseed. Rape and mustard has minimum area variability in all bcks f Surguja and Raigarh districts. izer reprted least and minimum variability in acreage in all blcks f Raigarh and Surguja district, and due t this reasn it has becme prfitable and cmpetative as cmpared t rape and mustard crp in hhattisgarh regin f Madhya Pradesh.. Table 3 shws that less than half per cent variability has been registered in acreage under redgram, blackgram and hrsegram, rape & mustard and nizer in mst f the blcks f Surguja and Raigarh district. Maximum variability in acreage under redgram, blackgram and grundnut has been bserved in blcks f Durg district. Lathyrus and linseed as Utera crp under pulse and ilseed grup respectively are t be either discuraged r made ecnmically viable thrugh develping new strain f seed fr Utera cultivatin.
