Superintendent Minutes Agenda item: Round table introductions Presenter: Individual attendees Each person took a moment to briefly introduce themselves and describe their role at their respective schools. Anyone is invited to attend these monthly community meetings. Agenda item: Meet the new superintendent/district update Presenter: Dr. Kent Kultgen Dr. Kultgen welcomed everyone to the PLUSS meeting and reiterated how happy he is to be in Snohomish. The discussion evolved into how we, as a district, measure success or what might define success for a SHS, GPHS or AIM graduate. He hopes to lead the district in a way that does not place obstacles in front of kids. His belief is that the focus should be on student learning at all times. Our district will present those kids who may be struggling with some options and interventions to prepare them for the real world and success beyond high school. There were also discussions about school start times, summer school, career and future readiness, technology, CORE 24 and CTE programs. Dr. Kultgen plans to visit with each parent group in the district. He will be at future PLUSS meetings. Agenda item: Washington State PTA/Successful fundraising Presenter: Sharon Flynn/Mary Levesque Sharon Flynn and Mary Levesque from Washington State PTSA opened up a discussion about how to run efficient and appropriate fundraisers including planning, implementation and reflection upon closing of the event. They discussed becoming well versed in the liability aspects of what you re planning and acquiring adequate insurance coverage to protect individuals and the district. It s useful for boards to look up and refer to PTA rules and guidelines when planning for the school year in advance. Tim Marks, pharmacist from Haggen in Snohomish, stopped by to introduce a flu-shot program which donates $1 per vaccine to the school of the patient s choice. The Snohomish Haggen Pharmacy has developed a program to help support schools within the Snohomish School District PTO/PTA, while promoting flu prevention in our community. For

2 every flu vaccine administered at the Snohomish Haggen before February 21, 2017, one dollar will be donated to the Snohomish schools, within the Snohomish School District. If you school parent organization would like to participate in this program, Becky at Haggen s will need your group s contact information and W-9. Becky can be reached at: Beccy Cafarella, Community Event Specialist, Haggen Food & Pharmacy, 2211 Rimland Drive, Ste. 300, Bellingham, WA 98226, (office), beccyc@haggen.com PLUSS attendees discussed their fundraising initiatives including fun runs, auctions, carnivals cookie sales, etc. Mary reminded people to look for grants and used Kohl s Cares as an example (Kohl s will donate $500 to any organization that they send five volunteers to). Mary and Sharon left a number of fundraising catalogs and other promotional materials with Kristin. Contact her if you would like to take a look through them or take some of them for your school fundraising efforts. Angela reminded attendees that the Snohomish Community Food Bank has been a wonderful partner of the PLUSS group and gives attendees soup labels and box tops every spring. Kristin reminded attendees that annual United Way corporate campaigns are coming up. Anyone can designate their United Way contribution to go directly to any 5013c such as a parent organization. United Way will take a small percentage processing fee. Agenda item: Go around Presenter: Individual attendees Representatives from schools went around and noted activities that have already happened and plans for upcoming events. Keely and Sheri from the Snohomish Education Foundation talked about the annual auction ($204,000 was raised of that $61,000 designated for classroom grants), the annual spring fundraising breakfast and the Hansen Shoe Fund. They also noted the SEF can be used to administer any school parent organization scholarships (they do not charge a processing fee). 6 Dear Families and Faculty, Flu season is here, and it s a good time to remind everyone about proper handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick people, covering coughs, and other methods to prevent the spread of flu. Flu shots are now available for this flu season, as well. The Snohomish Haggen Pharmacy has developed a program to help support schools within the Snohomish School PTO/PTA, while promoting flu prevention in our community. For every flu vaccine administered at the Snohomish Haggen before February 21, 2017, one dollar will be donated to the Snohomish Schools, within the Snohomish School District. Anyone in your family is eligible to help raise funds, even if they live outside of the Snohomish School District. Simply go to the Snohomish Haggen Pharmacy for a flu shot, and tell the pharmacist that you d like your dollar to support Snohomish schools!
