1 WELSH CONNECTION Immunization Awareness Month In this issue: Immunization Awareness Month Summer Recipe August is Immunization Awareness Month There are many things we want to pass on to our loved Partner Workout ones illness is not one of them National Health Center You want to pass on certain things like family traditions, Awareness Week a grandmother s quilt or dad s love of books but no one wants to pass on a serious illness. Take charge of your health and help protect those around you by asking about vaccines at your next doctor s visit. Vaccinating our children is commonplace in the United States. But many adults don t know which vaccines they need, and even fewer are fully vaccinated. For example, in 2014, only 28 percent of adults ages 60 and older had received a shingles vaccine and only 20 percent of adults older than 19 had received a Tdap vaccine. Each year, tens of thousands of adults needlessly suffer, are hospitalized, and even die as a result of diseases that could be prevented by vaccines. Not only can vaccine-preventable diseases make you very sick, but if you get sick, you may risk spreading certain diseases to others. That s a risk most of us do not want to take. Babies, older adults and people with weakened immune systems (like those undergoing cancer treatment) are especially vulnerable to infectious diseases. They are also more likely to have severe illness and complications if they do get sick. You can help protect your health and the health of your loved ones by getting your recommended vaccines. The good news is that getting vaccinated is easier than you think. Adults can get vaccinated at doctors offices, pharmacies, workplaces, health clinics and health departments. Visit vaccine.healthmap.org to help find a vaccine provider near you. Most health insurance plans cover the cost of recommended vaccines a call to your insurance provider can give you the details. What vaccines do you need? All adults should get: * Annual flu vaccine to protect against seasonal flu * Td/Tdap to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis Some additional vaccines you may need (depending on your age, health conditions and other factors) include: * Hepatitis A * Hepatitis B * Human Papillomavirus (HPV) * Meningococcal * Pneumococcal * Shingles * Tdap All adults should get an annual flu vaccine to protect against seasonal flu and a Td vaccine every 10 years to protect against tetanus and diphtheria. You may also need other vaccines based on your age, health conditions, occupation, and other factors. If you are planning to travel outside of the U.S., check on any additional vaccines you may need. Some travel-related vaccines are part of a series or are needed months prior to your travel to be most effective, so be sure to plan ahead. 2 One Move Wonder: Partner Push N Pull Partner 1: Sit on floor with legs straight out in front. Partner 2: Assume push-up position with partner 1 holding feet in the air. Partner 1: Press partner 2's legs into the air. Partner 2: Lower down into a push-up as legs are still in the air; return to start. Partner 1: Lowers partner 1's legs back to start. Switch positions. Do 3 one-minute sets with 30-second rests in between. Chicken, Spinach & Poblano Empanadas with Avocado-Jalapeno Dip INGREDIENTS For the Empanadas: 2 poblano chiles 2 tablespoons canola oil 2½ cups shredded chicken (I used rotisserie chicken) 1 medium onion, chopped 6 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup chicken broth 2 tomatillos, finely chopped 8 oz baby spinach Salt and pepper, to taste ⅔ cup sour cream 1 tablespoon lime juice 1 pack of 10 empanada discs, defrosted 1 large egg, lightly beaten with 1 tablespoon water For the Dip: 2 Hass avocados ½ cup sour cream Juice of 2 limes ½ jalapeno pepper, finely chopped and seeds removed 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro 3 cloves garlic, minced Salt and pepper, to taste DIRECTIONS This steak-worthy entrée can be a part of a healthy diet! Roast the poblanos directly under the broiler, turning every 2 minutes until all of the skin has blackened and the pepper is soft. Place the roasted poblanos in a paper back and fold the top to close and let cool for about 15 minutes, or until cool enough to handle. Peel off all of the blackened skin, and pull out the stem and seeds. Slice the roasted peppers into thin strips. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat and add in the chopped onion. Cook until the onion browns, about 6-8 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for about a minute, and then add in the broth and tomatillos. Increase the heat to medium high, and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated. Add the spinach and cook until wilted, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Mix in the sour cream, lime juice, and chicken, and stir until well combined. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Lay out the empanada discs and place a few tablespoons of filling on each round, making sure to leave about ½ inch open on all sides to seal. Fold over the empanadas to make a half moon shape and pinch and fold the edges to seal (much like you do with a pie crust). Place the empanadas on a parchment-lined baking sheet and brush the empanadas with the egg wash, avoiding getting any of the wash on the sealed edges. Bake for 15 minutes, then turn the tray, and bake for another minutes. Remove once golden brown. While the empanadas bake, make the Avocado-Jalapeno Dip. Combine all of the ingredients in a food processor and pulse until smooth.

3 Your Pregnancy: Protecting Baby Starts Now National Immunization Awareness Month is a reminder that we all need vaccines throughout our lives. From the moment you found out you were pregnant, you started protecting your developing baby. You might have changed the way you eat, started taking a prenatal vitamin, or researching the kind of car seat you ll buy. But did you know that one of the best ways to start protecting your developing baby against serious diseases is by making sure you get the whooping cough (Tdap) and flu vaccines while you are pregnant? The vaccines you get during your pregnancy will provide your developing baby with some disease protection (immunity) that will last the first months of life after birth. By getting vaccinated during pregnancy, you can pass antibodies to your baby that may help protect against diseases. This early protection is critical for diseases like the flu and whooping cough because babies in the first several months of life are at the greatest risk of severe illness from these diseases. However, they are too young to be vaccinated themselves. Passing maternal antibodies on to them is the only way to help directly protect them. In cases when doctors are able to determine who spread whooping cough to an infant, the mother was often the source. Once you have protection from the Tdap shot, you are less likely to give whooping cough to your newborn while caring for him or her. When it comes to flu, even if you are generally healthy, changes in immune, heart, and lung functions during pregnancy make you more likely to have a severe case of the flu if you catch it. If you catch the flu when you are pregnant, you also have a higher chance of experiencing pregnancy complications, such as premature labor and delivery. Getting a flu shot will help protect you and your baby while you are pregnant. August 7th-13th is National Health Center Week. 4 Back 2 School Dental Health Your child may have the latest wardrobe, school supplies and sports equipment for the new school year, but does she have a healthy mouth and the tools she'll need to maintain it? According to the American Dental Association, a dental examination is as important as immunizations and booster shots and should be a regular part of back-to-school preparations. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that tooth decay affects U.S. children more than any other chronic infectious disease and 19 percent of children ages 2 to 19 years old have untreated tooth decay. Dental pain or disease can lead to difficulty in eating, speaking, playing and learning as well as millions of hours of missed school. Your child's back-to-school checklist should include: Regular dental examinations to diagnose and treat or prevent dental problems. Parents and teachers may not realize there's a dental problem, so regular checkups are important. Your dentist may suggest fluoride treatments or sealants to prevent decay and can diagnose and treat dental problems to save your child pain and lost school time. Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste and flossing. Head for the dental care isle when you're out shopping for notebooks, binders and pencils. If parents buy several toothbrushes they could have their child change to a new one every three months or so, or after an illness. If it's hard to remember when to change a brush, you could try to change it every time report cards come out. Ask your dentist for a recommendation on how often to change toothbrushes. Eating healthy lunches and snacks. Include portable healthy lunch items and snacks in your child's sack lunch, including grains, milk, cheese, raw vegetables, yogurt or fruit. If your child eats in the school cafeteria, review healthy, balanced food choices with him before the first day of school. Cut back on sugary foods and soft drinks. Wearing a properly fitted mouth guard while participating in organized sports, PE classes or playground activities. consumer-news-back-to-school
