1 Barwon Valley News April 26th 2018 In this issue Principal s Message Celebrating at BVS Be The Best You Can Be Wellbeing Principal s Message You may have seen a press release last week announcing that BVS will be allocated just over two million dollars in the State Government's 2018/2019 Budget. This funding is to upgrade classrooms and school facilities. It's exciting news and we are currently compiling a 'wish list' of projects we would like to see done but will have to wait for guidelines to come through which will determine how the money can be spent. Julie Brown Acting Principal Be The Best You Can Be Contact Details Barwon Valley School Address: Laura Av Belmont, Vic, 3216 Phone: Postal Address: PO Box 502 Belmont, Vic, 3216 Website: barwon.valley.sch@edumail.vic.gov.au We were happy to welcome MP Sarah Henderson to Barwon Valley School last Friday 20th April. Sarah was here to present the school with a new Australian flag. The students were very excited to meet her and made her feel very welcome. Diary Dates Monday 7th May Flu Immunisations Monday 14th May Finance Committee meeting Tuesday 22nd May School Council meeting Friday 29th June Last Day Term 2 Barwon Valley School is committed to safety and wellbeing of all children and young people and has zero tolerance for child abuse. (Child Safe Standards)
2 Excellence in Teaching and Learning BVS Whole School Literacy Oberon High and JOS are currently doing shared reading (self - selected) together two days a week. We are getting the older students to listen to the younger ones and then the younger are listening to the older. It has been a wonderful success.
3 Community Engagement in Learning - Building Communities Anzac Ceremony Anzac Ceremony at Peace Memorial Milly - I enjoyed laying the flowers at the ceremony. I felt proud and grateful that I could be involved in the ceremony. Jasmine - I learnt a lot about Anzac Day and liked putting the wreath on the ground. Cold and Flu Season As the cooler and wetter weather sets in please remember to ensure your child has warm clothing such as a coat or jumper for break times or outdoor class activities. When UV levels are below 3 (generally from May to August in Victoria) it is important to be physically active outdoors when possible to help boost vitamin D levels. The change in weather also brings the cold and flu season to us. Flu vaccinations for staff and students will take place on Monday May 7th. There is no vaccine for the common cold so prevention is about a healthy lifestyle and avoiding others infected with colds or flu. Some things we can all do to help stop the spread of germs include: washing your hands regularly and properly with soap and water, particularly after touching your nose or mouth and before handling food sneezing and coughing into tissues then throwing them away immediately and washing your hands cleaning surfaces such as your keyboard, telephone and door handles regularly to get rid of germs not sharing cups, plates and cutlery where you can, avoid sharing towels with other people and throw disposable tissues and paper towels in the bin immediately after using them. We encourage students and staff to stay home when sick to help reduce the spread of infection which in turn increases absenteeism. As in any school, we also have vulnerable people in our community and attending whilst sick could put the health of others at risk.
4 Bucket Hats We now have BVS / House bucket hats for sale at the school office. They come in sizes: Small, Medium and Large Cost: $16 Colours / House: Blue / Reynolds Red / Williams Green / Sullivan Yellow / Laura We have sizes at the school office for your child to try. Debutante Ball Our practices for the Deb Ball (and Movement to Music Festival) have begun. The students are all enjoying these sessions with Lyndal, our dance instructor. It is important for all BVAC students to be at school every day, but particularly important that they are at school on Monday and Wednesday afternoons to practise their dancing and build up their hours towards their Bridge award. Thanks for your support in ensuring this happens. Whole School Assembly This week at Whole School Assembly we will have Major Brett Mackenzie who works for the Defence Force in the Army coming in to talk to us about his roll in the Army and Anzac Day. We will also present our buddies with their "Buddy Bands". Qkr! is here at Barwon Valley School The new Qkr! app is here for families of students at Barwon Valley School to order and pay for canteen, payment of school fees and excursions. Qkr! by MasterCard can be downloaded for free from Apple s app store for iphones (ipads should download the iphone app) or from Google Play for Android phones and tablets. If you have any queries regarding Qkr, please don t hesitate to contact Noeline Burney, Business and Finance Leader on
