This year s speaker is Bobby Smith, a 14-year veteran of the National Hockey League and current majority owner and president of the Halifax Mooseheads hockey club. Following his retirement as a player, Smith completed his post-secondary education and pursued a career in hockey first in management and subsequently as an owner. His talk will focus on always thinking about what will come next in your career. BRENDA MACISAAC, RDH, BSc, MEd 9:00 to 10:00 Oral Pathology 101: a refresher course for dental professionals This presentation will review common and not-so-common oral lesions and conditions. It will focus on the clinical presentation and recognition of specific oral lesions, as well as how to best document these findings. This course is perfect for oral health professionals who want a refresher in oral pathology and a review of the basics. Topics include: oral ulcers; red and white lesions; papillary lesions, including HPV; and lesions that have a vesicular appearance. Identify common oral lesions by their clinical appearance. Decide on the best management for these various lesions and conditions. Accurately describe and document lesions in a way that any oral health care provider can understand. 10:00 to 12:00 Why is there glass in my toothpaste? This course will examine the basis for the inclusion of glass, as an active ingredient, in the next generation of toothpaste products. In particular, the speaker will explain some of the basic concepts behind the use of bioactive glasses in dental applications, and in particular the potential benefits associated with the inclusion of bioactive glass materials in toothpastes. Discuss, illustrate, and inform dental hygienists on why glass particles are increasingly being used in toothpastes. Examine the basic aspects of bioactive glass materials, so as to inform hygienists on the mechanisms by which glasses in toothpaste may be beneficial to oral health. SACHIN SETH, BSc, DDS, MEd This course will review the various bases and liners traditionally used in dentistry, their use in clinical practice, and current scientific evidence. New and emerging materials will also be presented with discussion on their future application in restorative dentistry. To know when and why you should place a base/liner. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2016, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Obturation with warm vertical condensation (lecture and hands-on session) DR. ISABEL MELLO, DDS, MSc, PhD, FRCDC WITH DR. MICHAEL BISHOP & DR. WAYNE MAILLET This course is designed for clinicians who want to learn how to fill the root canal system with the warm vertical condensation technique. The lecture component will cover evidence-based concepts in obturation and the role they play in the treatment outcome. In the hands-on session, course experts will teach you how to use the technique and make it work efficiently and predictably for you. Participants will get to experience the concepts and technique covered in the lecture by performing obturation in simulated canals and will have the opportunity to try different obturation devices for warm vertical condensation. The dynamics of working efficiently with a dental assistant during obturation will be demonstrated. Understand the principles of obturation and acknowledge its importance in the overall endodontic procedure and treatment outcome. Articulate basic differences between different obturation techniques. Learn about root canal obturating materials available and what constitutes an ideal root canal filling material. Get acquainted with armamentarium for warm vertical condensation technique. Perform step-by-step obturation procedure with the warm vertical condensation technique, using different obturation devices. Apply strategies to optimize four-handed endodontics. Learn how to manage some common medical emergencies you could experience in your office or clinic. Topics will include, but are not limited to: Vasovagal/syncope episodes Hypo/hyperglycemia Allergic reactions Airway emergencies and complications Seizures This education session will be followed by a hands-on skills session including proper bag valve mask ventilation, oral and nasal airways, use of glottic airways including laryngeal mask airway, laryngeal tube, and I Gel airway.
