Machell Hudson, RDH, is on faculty & consults with clients through Productive Dentist Academy. She is a full-time clinical hygienist with Dr. Bruce Baird at Granbury Dental Center, and holds advanced certification in laser therapy and oral-systemic connection through the Bale Doneen method preceptorship. She can be reached at Machell@productivedentist.com or Machell Hudson, RDH, is one of America s most productive hygienist. She is the Director of oral/systemic wellness for Granbury Dental Center and a Hygiene Consultant with Productive Dentist Academy. She holds advanced laser certification, and also arterial wellness through the BaleDoneen method preceptorship. She fell in love with the dentistry at 24 when she became a dental assistant. She has worked as a hygienist for Dr. Bruce Baird at Granbury Dental Center for 10 years where she has applied her passion for hygiene and helping people. Machell shares that she feels blessed to have a job where she is able to positively impact the lives and health of her patients who she considers as family. 4 About the Speaker (Saturday, Jan. 26, :00-4:00) Sherri Lukes, RDH, MS, FAADH has been a dental hygienist for 37 years and holds advanced degrees in education. She is associate professor emerita, Southern Illinois University Dental Hygiene Program, where she taught oral pathology, public health, multicultural dental hygiene and advanced periodontics clinic. Her research concentration was in oral pathology, migrant farm worker oral health, and challenges of other underserved groups, resulting in multiple peer reviewed publications. A Pathology Fellow and approved speaker of the American Academy of Dental Hygiene, Sherri enjoys integrating her expertise from years of teaching and research into CE courses to empower dental professionals in the delivery of care. Ms. Lukes is a Past President of the Illinois Dental Hygienists Association and a member of the American Academy of Oral Medicine. Community service includes biannual mission trips to central Mexico, where accompanied by SIU dental hygiene students, she provides oral health care in an orphanage and remote villages. She received Community Service, Teacher of the Year, and Research Paper of the Year awards while at SIU, was named an Oral Health Champion by the IFLOSS Coalition and the Illinois Department of Public Health and is a past recipient of the Sunstar/RDH Award of Distinction From the Cradle to the Grave: Oral Pathology Through the Life Span (Saturday, Jan. 26, :00-12:00-3 CEUs) Instructional Objectives: Upon completion of the session participants will be able to: 1. Explain the etiology of various oral pathologic conditions affecting children, adolescent, adult and geriatric clients. 2. Describe the clinical appearance of various oral pathologic conditions. 3. List treatment options for various oral pathologic conditions. 4. Explain the importance of current oral pathology knowledge when conducting intra/extra-oral exams. 5. Compare/contrast lesions that can be considered in a differential diagnosis for each pathologic entity. 6. Describe oral symptoms of various systemic conditions as presented in cases. Every day in our dental practices, patients of all ages present with various oral pathologies. This course is an overview of oral pathologic conditions affecting children, adults and geriatric clients. It includes both common and uncommon conditions. Many of the images and cases presented are from Ms. Lukes own personal collection of lesion images accumulated over 37 years as a dental hygienist and a 28-year teaching career. Etiology, clinical appearance, treatment options and relevance to dental hygiene are included for each lesion/condition. Comparison images for inclusion in the differential diagnosis will also be presented and discussed. This course can serve as an excellent update for seasoned hygienists/dentists or a relevant review for new graduates entering the field. Oral Pathology and the Assessment Process: It s Risky Business (Saturday, Jan. 26, :00-4:00-3 CEUs) Upon completion of the session, participants will be able to: 1. Explain the assessment process as it relates to oral lesion detection 2. List the descriptors for pathologic lesions used in the assessment process 3. Describe specific lesions that correspond with the various descriptors 4. Discuss the possible conditions included in the differential diagnoses of various types of oral lesions 5. Describe the types of oral cancer lesions 6. Differentiate oral cancer lesions from similar appearing lesions 7. Demonstrate an oral cancer screening with screening devices This course will review the assessment portion of the dental hygiene process of care, specifically in relation to oral pathology and lesion detection. The range of descriptors for lesions and anomalies will be presented with lesion examples for each descriptor. Cases with the various types of lesions with be presented with a differential diagnosis discussion with
5 audience participation. Emphasis will be placed on detecting lesions that are suspicious for oral cancer and differentiation of similar appearing lesions.
