PRINCIPAL POSITIONS HELD: 2011-present University of Colorado Denver, School of Public Health Assistant Professor Role: Conduct research on perinatal factors that influence obesity and cardio-metabolic disease risk including gestation, early postnatal life, adiposity rebound, puberty and pregnancy. Develop a research agenda with the goal of preventing childhood obesity by targeting critical developmental periods such as breastfeeding, maternal diet during pregnancy, and control of gestational weight gain. My research explores the role of early infant diet and breastfeeding to attenuate the unfavorable obesity outcomes associated with in utero exposure to over-nutrition from maternal obesity and pregnancy. I am currently a co-investigator on three projects: The EPOCH, a retrospective cohort study that looks at the effect of exposure to maternal diabetes on offspring obesity and fat distribution patterns; the multi-center SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Study, a registry study that explores the etiology and clinical course of childhood diabetes; and the Healthy Start Study that assesses the impact of perinatal exposures on infant growth, metabolic health and body composition Rocky Mountain Center for Health Program Evaluator Role: Provide evaluation technical assistance (TA) and training to staff, clients, and local and state education agencies and non-governmental organizations funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Adolescent and School Health (CDC DASH). Provide detailed TA and training to local and state adolescent and school heath programs on using epidemiologic data for program planning, strategic planning, logic models, developing evaluation plans, and developing evaluation reports to share their accomplishments and identify program improvements. Develop evaluation tools and resources for CDC DASH programs and project officers. Develop and deliver trainings on program evaluation topics Colorado Department of Public Health Epidemiologist Roles: Chronic Disease Prevention Program:
2 Develop and implement epidemiologic research projects, utilizing a variety of qualitative and quantitative research methods to determine relationships between public health issues and risk factors that influence maternal-child health and chronic disease morbidity and mortality in Colorado. Research, write, and communicate surveillance and evaluation reports to public health programs, agencies and coalitions. Chair the Colorado Asthma Research and Evaluation Advisory Group and the Colorado Health Data Advisory Group from to foster collaboration and share resources among epidemiologists and program evaluators from various governmental, non-profit, and community organizations in Colorado. Communicable Disease Program: Coordinate surveillance studies for CDC s Active Bacterial Core, including Salmonella infection, pneumococcal disease in children and Giardia infection. Implement and analyze a survey of early onset Group B Streptococcus prevention practices among Colorado obstetric providers and presented results at the International Congress on Emerging Infectious Disease. Provide consultation to health care providers, patients, and the public on infectious disease subjects. Injury Prevention Program: Coordinate data collection for Child Fatality Review Committee and Colorado Traumatic Brain Injury Surveillance System. Conduct epidemiologic analyses to explore relationships between modifiable risk factors and injury outcomes. Write reports linking data to prevention strategies that guide community interventions. Develop and implement an injury prevention needs assessment for Colorado county health departments to facilitate the incorporation of child injury prevention activities into their Maternal Child Health (MCH) block grant strategic plans University of Colorado Health Sciences Center Professional Research Assistant Role: Maintain cell culture lines, culture and purified virus, perform western blots, to study the process of virusinduced apoptosis. Attend labor and delivery units in Denver to collect umbilical cord blood. Process cord blood to harvest stem cells and cryogenically freeze units for potential transplantation. Maintain database of donor information and cell markers used for matching donors with recipients. Other Positions Held Concurrently Colorado School of Public Health Student Research Assistant III. KEYWORDS/AREAS OF INTEREST: Women s health, obesity, child obesity, metabolism, diabetes, gestational diabetes, pregnancy, lactation, fat distribution, visceral fat, cardiovascular disease, epigenetics, life course epidemiology, fetal programming. IV. RESEARCH SUPPORT 1. Healthy Start Study Co-Investigator: Tessa Crume, PhD, MSPH (percent effort: 40%) Principal Investigator: Dana Dabelea, MD, PhD Sponsor: National Institutes of Health-NICHD, 5RO1DK Project Period: August 1, 2009 July 31, 2013 This study explores the influence of maternal obesity on in utero programming of neonatal body composition and metabolism. Researchers will examine the relationship between specific maternal factors including maternal obesity, diet and weight gain during pregnancy (maternal fuels, markers of insulin resistance and inflammation) and offspring outcomes. 2. SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth 3-Colorado Site 2
3 Co-Investigator: Tessa Crume, PhD, MSPH (percent effort: 35%) Principal Investigator Dana Dabelea, MD, PhD Sponsor: Centers for Disease Control, 1U18DP A1 Project Period: September 30, 2010 September 29, 2015 Tessa Crume This study is one of six centers designated by CDC to set-up a national registry of childhood diabetes, which builds on the previous collaborative research project, SEARCH1. Researchers will prospectively ascertain newly diagnosed ( ) incident diabetes cases in children/youth less than 20 years of age and collect data that permits estimation of temporal trends in diabetes incidence, will conduct longitudinal follow-up of incident cases already recruited to SEARCH1, and will assess the impact of quality of diabetes care in youth on short- and longterm outcomes including quality of life. 4. Nutrition and Metabolic Status in Diabetic Youth: SEARCH Nutrition Ancillary Study (SNAS) Co-Investigator Tessa Crume, PhD, MSPH (percent effort: 5%) Principal Investigator: Elizabeth J. Mayer-Davis (UNC and Dana Dabelea (UCDenver) Sponsor National Institutes of Health-NIDDK, R01DK Project Period: January 1, 2008-December 31, 2011 The overall goal of the SEARCH Nutrition Ancillary Study (SNAS) is to examine associations of nutritional factors with 1) the progression of insulin secretion defects, and 2) the presence of CVD risk factors in youth with T1DM. These two aspects of the metabolic status of youth with T1DM are key determinants of long-term risk for serious complications of DM. V.
