6 Founding Principle Reducing the prevalence of chronic diseases throughout life starts by promoting healthy, nutrientrich diets based on wholesome foods before conception, during pregnancy and lactation, and in infancy and early childhood.

7 Developmental Origins of Health and Disease OHSU is recognized internationally as a leader in the exploration of the developmental origins of health and disease, which includes the vital relationships between maternal prenatal diet, fetal health and adult onset disease.

13 Improving Adolescent Awareness of the Epigenetics of Generational Nutrition Jackilen Shannon, Ph.D., RD Public Health and Preventive Medicine, CROET Scientist Leverage Let s Get Healthy!, an established education and research exhibit at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), as a tool for subject recruitment, intervention delivery, and data collection. Create a NEW epigenetics module to educate middle school students about a whole-foods diet and epigenetics. Evaluate effectiveness of the module in modifying knowledge, attitudes and intended behaviors with pre-post evaluation as well as fair statistics.

14 The Pregnancy Exercise & Nutrition (PEN) Program Linn Goldberg, M.D., Health Promotion & Sports Medicine Develop and implement a 20-session workplace administered, team and web-based educational program to reduce risk factors for gestational diabetes. Builds on the OHSU Health Team Healthy U employee wellness program Focuses on healthy nutrition, stress reduction and regular physical activity during pregnancy. Assesses outcomes of intervention and controls participants (15 women in each group) with respect to weight gain and health outcomes during pregnancy and birth and infant outcomes within 4 months.

15 Nutrient-Rich, Whole-Food Dietary Intervention in Pregnant Women with ADHD Joel Nigg, Ph.D., Pediatric Psychiatry Assess nutrient intake, dietary compliance and effectiveness of changing diet in pregnant women with ADHD. Assess change in maternal symptoms of ADHD, depression, and anxiety 1 and 2 months after initiating the intervention diet compared to standard of care. Evaluate biological and behavioral outcomes in offspring to 3 months of age. Infant physical and perinatal health assessed through birth weight, APGAR scores, perinatal presentation, growth parameters and infant feeding practices Infant neural development assessed by MRI Infant temperament assessed by standard observational methods.
