Recovery Plus Your enhanced recovery programme
Recovery Plus Your enhanced recovery programme Recovery Plus is Nuffield Health s flagship recovery programme available free of charge to our private patients. You ve been given this leaflet because your Consultant and Physiotherapist feel Recovery Plus might be right for you. Recovery Plus brings together a spectrum of healthcare services across Nuffield Health s Hospitals and Fitness & Wellbeing Centres, and provides you with the support you need to get well and stay healthy after your procedure. Recovery Plus embodies Nuffield Health s complete end-to-end approach to healthcare. It is an optional enhanced recovery programme available to our private patients when appropriate. Recovery Plus provides you with a personal recovery programme, health check, exercise and diet advice, together with a 3 month membership at a Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Centre and your own recovery coach. So you ll be doing everything you can to maximise your recovery. Choosing this option following your procedure means you ll enjoy our usual high standards of care and treatment while you re in hospital. Once you have completed your programme of physiotherapy your physiotherapist will work with our exercise professionals to create a personalised programme of exercise which will help you on your path to complete recovery. 02 Nuffield Health is proud to offer Recovery Plus to our private patients at no additional cost.
Complete healthcare from Nuffield Health Achieving the best recovery possible By helping you actively take control of your health and fitness, Recovery Plus aims to help you achieve a faster and more complete recovery. A successful recovery can see you returning to activities such as walking, driving, swimming, golf and gardening sooner than you could imagine, significantly improving your quality of life. Always the very best standards of care To ensure the highest possible standards of care, our teams have all completed training and development in recovery. Our performance is continually monitored to ensure we adhere to best practice and deliver an appropriate and effective recovery programme. Looking after people not profits Established in 1957, Nuffield Health is a not-for-profit organisation and as such has no shareholders, so any surplus we make is reinvested to develop services such as Recovery Plus as well as improving the quality of healthcare we deliver for our patients. For more information on Recovery Plus and full list of applicable treatments Contact your local Nuffield Health Hospital on or visit nuffieldhealth.com/recoveryplus Recovery Plus - your enhanced recovery programme 03
Your Recovery Plus journey A programme tailored around you Everyone s recovery is different, which is why we provide you with an individually tailored recovery programme. We work with you to understand what you want to get out of your recovery. Whether it be getting back to a weekly round of golf, tending to the garden, or playing with the grandchildren, our priority is getting you back to doing the things you love. Your next steps to a full recovery After your surgery your physiotherapist will guide your post-operative rehabilitation, both as an in-patient and as an out-patient. Once your recovery has progressed and you are getting about relatively easily, regular low impact exercise can make a big difference to your recovery. Suitable exercises together with activities such as walking, swimming and stationary cycling can help you to regain strength, movement and flexibility. Normally these activities are done alone, and you may feel worried that you re not exercising correctly, however throughout your Recovery Plus journey, we re with you every step of the way, helping you progress at your own pace. 04 You ll be given a tailored exercise plan and a 3 month membership at your local Fitness & Wellbeing Centre. Care must always be taken after a major operation and safety is our first priority. For this reason, Recovery Plus puts you in the safe hands of your very own recovery coach.
Nutrition advice Nutrition A healthy diet will ensure you are providing your body with the nutrients it needs for a good recovery. You may also have been advised to lose weight to avoid putting too much stress on your joints. With Recovery Plus you ll be able to get diet advice from your recovery coach. Health MOT A key part of your Recovery Plus programme is a health check delivered in your Fitness & Wellbeing Centre by your personal recovery coach. Your Health MOT will include a personalised exercise programme to achieve the right results for you. Health Your recovery coach will ensure that the exercise programme is tailored to meet your needs in line with your Consultant s and Physiotherapist s advice. This ensures activities, exercises and levels of progression will be chosen to ensure your safe and effective progress. We know that you will be recovering from major surgery, and we re here to tailor your recovery programme to your individual needs we understand that your emotional recovery and total wellbeing are just as important. Recovery Plus - your enhanced recovery programme 05
A welcoming, well-equipped environment We aim to make your experience at your local Fitness & Wellbeing Centre safe, comfortable and enjoyable. You will find modern, clean, attractive facilities, a full range of exercise equipment and caring, helpful, qualified staff. It doesn t matter if you haven t exercised in years, or are nervous about using the equipment, our exercise professionals will ensure you are working in line with your personalised programme and there will always be someone on hand to explain things so that you feel comfortable and are confident you are exercising safely. 06
Recovering with the help of an expert team Recovery Plus offers the peace of mind that you re recovering under the guidance of fully trained professionals: Your Consultant Surgeon will be part of your hospital care, from the very first consultation appointment through to ensuring you achieve your maximum recovery and best health following surgery. Our caring and well-trained nursing staff will be with you every step of the way throughout your hospital journey, from meeting you at our pre-admission clinics to your post-surgery follow up appointment. Your Physiotherapist will guide your post-operative treatment in the Hospital until you are discharged from your Physiotherapist s care. If you choose to opt for Recovery Plus your Physiotherapist will refer you on to the recovery coach in the Fitness & Wellbeing Centre who will continue your extended rehabilitation. 4 Your recovery coach is a trained exercise professional and will carry out your Health MOT at the start and end of your 3 month Recovery Plus journey. They will have received a referral from your Hospital Physiotherapist so will be aware of any particular information they need to ensure your programme is specifically tailored for you. They can also give nutritional advice and will arrange your four touch-point sessions throughout the 3 month period. 8 Recovery Plus What our patients say about us It was positive right from the beginning to end. All done very professionally. A very good thing that when you have an operation you can follow it on, you don t just leave the hospital and that s it Such a good idea, such a good programme. Elizabeth, 71. Recovery Plus patient treated at Nuffield Health Leicester Hospital and Nuffield Health Leicester Fitness & Wellbeing Centre Having gone through the same thing with my other knee where the physio after was purely once a month at the hospital and which didn t have all the wonderful facilities at the Nuffield Health gym, comparing the two, well there wasn t a comparison, it was much much better and I think it helped my recovery greatly much quicker I was very positive about the whole thing and I would recommend it to anybody. Recovery Plus at Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital was instrumental in speeding up my recovery after my major operation. I had quite a complex procedure but was able to use the swimming pool and the gym at the Fitness & Wellbeing Centre and as a result was driving and back at work after 6 weeks. I would definitely recommend Nuffield Health for hip surgery. David Woodward. 10 FAQs Q: What should I wear to exercise at the Fitness & Wellbeing Centre? A: Any loose comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Shorts or tracksuit trousers that can stretch with trainers would be best. We have changing facilities with lockers where you can leave your day clothes. Q: How much time should I allow for my first appointment? A: Please allow at least 90 minutes. This will allow you time to be registered for your pass, change into suitable clothing, enjoy your first recovery coach session and spend time exercising after your expert session has ended, if you wish. Q: Will I be able to use the pool? A: You will be able to use the pool if your recovery coach indicates it is safe to do so. Q: Will I be able to join the classes? A: You will be eligible to join classes but please discuss this with your recovery coach who will offer advice on the classes that are most suitable for you. Q: What number should I call if I need to cancel or change my appointment? A: Your recovery coach will provide you with the local number of your Fitness & Wellbeing Centre reception during your first appointment. The reception staff will be happy to amend your appointment for you. Q: Will the Fitness & Wellbeing Centre have a car park? A: Most sites offer ample car parking and disabled spaces if needed. You can check the facilities at your local Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Centre on our website (nuffieldhealth.com/gyms). 10
FAQs Q. If I have my operation at a Nuffield Health Hospital but I have my outpatient Physiotherapy with a non-nuffield Physiotherapist, am I still eligible for Recovery Plus in a Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Centre? A. Yes you are entitled to attend a Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Centre, however on discharge from the ward you will need to ensure your hospital Physiotherapist gives you a referral letter and instructions to take to your Physiotherapist. Q. If I am unsure if I want to join Recovery Plus who should I speak to? A. Your Physiotherapist will be able to answer all questions on Recovery Plus and together you can discuss if it is right for you, however if you would like to visit the Fitness & Wellbeing Centre before making a final decision the Physiotherapist can arrange this for you. Q. If I am already a member of a non-nuffield Health gym can I use the Recovery Plus programme there? A. We would encourage you to complete your Recovery Plus journey in a Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Centre to be guided by our expert professionals, however once you have attended the Fitness & Wellbeing Centre you would then be able to follow the exercise programme in a gym of your choice. Q. How do I know that the exercise programme I will be given will be safe for me following surgery? A. The recovery coach at the Fitness & Wellbeing Centre has qualifications in exercise prescription and has had extra training from the Recovery Plus Physiotherapist at the Nuffield Health Hospital. Should your recovery coach have any questions or concerns they will be able to discuss them directly with your Hospital Physiotherapist. 11
