What are the changes made to the clarified definitions? Removal of the drug and alcohol exclusion on Dementia Removal of Out of hospital requirement for the cardiac arrest Loosening of the definition as a MMSE score of 24 is comparatively easier to meet than the previous Whole Person Impairment (WPI) of 25% test Changes Removal of the word permanent from the diagnosis of the irreversible failure of brain function resulting in significant cognitive impairment Removal of impairment for which no other recognisable cause has been identified Consultant neurologist, psycho-geriatrician, psychiatrist or geriatrician have been changed to relevant medical specialist Removal of exclusion related to alcohol or drug abuse Change from Out of Hospital cardiac arrest to cardiac arrest The intention remains to exclude cardiac arrest related to any medical procedure Clarification around what else can be considered as an acceptable evidence if the electrocardiogram (ECG) report is not available to validate a cardiac arrest Whole person impairment (WPI) test criteria has been changed to Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) assessment MMSE is a cognitive impairment assessment tool as against WPI, which is used to assess functional impairment, this aligns with major head trauma condition which is a cognitive impairment. MMSE score of 24 is easier to be assessed than WPI 25% and hence this change is an improvement What is the new definition? Relevant Medical Specialist: The introduction of the new Relevant Medical Specialist definition is to standardize the medical specialists listed in our PDS. 6
7 Introducing Income Care Platinum Income Care Platinum product is our new product, offering a generous total disability definition to our customers CommInsure Protection currently offers Income Care (standard) and Income Care Plus (extra benefits) products under an ordinary policy, Income Care Super within Total Care Plan Super and Income Protection SMSF Plan available to SMSF trustees. The new Income Care Platinum will offer all the benefits in Income Care Plus but with: a more generous three-tier total disability definition that allows you to claim the total disability benefit even if you re working in a reduced capacity. a more flexible waiting period (for waiting periods of 3 months or less) however, Income Care Platinum has a more rigorous method of determining partial disability. The three tiers of the more generous total disability definition are: duties based definition, income based definition, or an hour based definition. If the claimant satisfies any one of the three tiers, the claimant will be admitted as Totally Disabled and a total disability benefit will be paid.
