1 Prophesy and Preparedness Why This Topic is Important to Me With Steven Horne Three Levels of Preparedness Basic: Natural Disasters and Other Local Emergency Situations Basic emergency supplies and know-how, first aid Intermediate: Widespread Disasters, Monetary or Social Collapse Traditional skills: Gardening, food storage and preservation, sewing, herbalism, etc. Survivalist: Total Collapse, End of the World Primitive survival skills Major Concerns Avoiding panic and helping people stay calm Treatment of wounds and injuries (stopping bleeding, etc.) Avoiding hypothermia or hyperthermia Sanitation and avoiding infection Pain relief In a crisis the body releases stress hormones like cortisol Higher brain functions are inhibited and instinctive reactions can take over (fight, flight or freeze) This can prevent a person from making clear decisions about what they need to do to for survival Panic Kills Preparation Prevents Fear Preparation, forethought, knowledge and skills inhibit fear reactions If you have thought about what to do in an emergency and made preparations, you are less likely to panic 1
2 Take a deep breath or two and try to relax Assess the situation, attend to any immediate needs, and enlist the cooperation of everyone involved in the situation Each of you has a responsibility to life for yourselves and your loved ones Focus on and execute your survival plan Managing Fear Be Prepared to Fight Stress Rescue Remedy (or NSP Distress Remedy or FES 5-flower remedy) A good nervine: lobelia, kava kava, valerian For long term management of stress, also consider adaptagens (eleuthero, schisandra or a good adaptagen formula) Thermoregulation Maintaining a stable body temperature is vital to your survival. Exposure to extreme cold or heat will eventually kill you Keeping warm in winter or cool in summer isn t rocket science, but you need to know a few important rules Thermoregulation Balance between heat production from metabolism and heat loss Also involves the physics of radiation, convection and conduction Signs of Hypothermia Core temperature between 93o 96o F Shivering Decreased awareness Confused, unable to think or solve problems Apathy Skin pale and cool to the touch Numbness Loss of dexterity Signs of Hyperthermia Core temperature between 99o 104o F Thirst Profuse sweating Headache and Dizziness Nausea progressing to vomiting Decreased appetite General weakness Confused and disoriented Muscle cramps Cool, pale, moist skin Weak, rapid pulse with shallow, rapid breathing 2
