12 Health Information Do you live in Thanet? Come and share your experiences We ll be in Thanet this week (September 9 th ). Everyone is welcome so do please spread the word and encourage your contacts to come and share their experiences of local services with us. As well as giving an update about our work, we will have speakers from East Kent Hospitals and Thanet Clinical Commissioning Group. We ll be at Canterbury Christ Church University, Broadstairs Campus from 11 3pm. Please RSVP to Gemma on gemma@healthwatchkent.co.uk and let her know your dietary requirements. Working with the Deaf Community Over 45 members of the deaf community joined us last month to learn more about the future of East Kent Hospitals. It was a fantastic turn out and testament to the hard work and commitment by Healthwatch volunteer, Annie McMillan. The event was a culmination of a lot of work that Annie has done to support deaf people including the creation of the Healthwatch Kent text service for people who need a British Sign Language interpreter and the provision of credit cards for all deaf people in Kent to inform health and social care professionals that they require an interpreter at their appointments. If you know of any deaf people then do please encourage them to share with us their experiences of health & social care services. We will use their experiences to help improve services. The Healthwatch Kent text number is or info@healthwatchkent.co.uk Share your patient experience of Community Hospitals If you, or a family member has been treated in a community hospital within the last two years, you may consider getting involved and helping to improve the service for others. The following hospitals all have vacancies on their Patient Experience Groups Edenbridge and District War Memorial Hospital Gravesham Community Hospital Hawkhurst Community Hospital Livingstone Hospital, Dartford Sevenoaks Hospital Tonbridge Cottage Hospital Whitstable and Tankerton Hospital. If you live on the Isle of Sheppey, there is an event on September 10 th for people to share their experiences of Sheppey Hospital. There is a similar event in Gravesend on October 13 th about Gravesham Community Hospital. For more information or to register a place at the meetings involveme@kentcht.nhs.uk or phone Do you live in Tunbridge Wells? Have you ben to the dentist recently? We are very keen to hear about people s experiences of NHS dental services particularly if you live in Tunbridge Wells. We ll soon be completing a number of Enter & View visits to dentists and we want to hear about your experience as part of that project. Contact us for free anytime on or info@healthwatchkent.co.uk Your health & social care services are integrating. Help make it happen If you use health & social care services, or are interested in how they could and should integrate, then you will be interested in attending an event in Tonbridge on September 23 rd from 10 4pm. The event is called Making it Real and they want to hear from people about what good care should look like and discuss how we can make it happen. This is one of several events taking place. We will post details of the others as soon as we have them. To register your interest, Sian at sian.dellaway@kent.gov.uk Showcasing our work Last week we presented to the Kent Health Overview & Scrutiny Committee (HOSC) about our work and our plans for the year ahead. HOSC is made up of Kent County Councillors and their role is to scrutinise health services in Kent. They meet each month in Maidstone and they are public meetings. If you can t attend them you may wish to watch them online. Check out Steve s presentation here
13 Funding Comic Relief There are still many communities in the UK that suffer from economic and social deprivation and the current economic climate may make this situation worse. For this reason, Comic Relief has decided that 4.5 million should be available to fund projects across the UK which are addressing these issues through the 'Local Communities' programme Comic Relief is pleased to be working with UK Community Foundations and Community Foundations across the UK, to deliver this Local Communities programme. Kent Community Foundation is one of the delivery partners. The Local Communities programme will run for two years and during this time, grants of between 1000 and 10,000 will be available. The programme aims to empower local people, enabling them to create lasting change in their communities. Projects should be run by people directly affected by the issues they are dealing with and priority will be given to small, locally based groups or organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the needs of their community. Under the programme, organisations can apply for funding to: 1. Improve people's life skills, education, employability and enterprise 2. Maximise people's ability to strengthen community cohesion and build social capacity 3. Provide people with opportunities to access local services, achieve greater social justice and to reduce inequality, exclusion and disadvantage 4. Advance people's physical and mental health, wellbeing and safety For more information visit:
