1 Voluntary and Community Sector Swale Trustee Event Following the successful Swale Trustee Network event in November of last year, we would like to hold the second one in order to support trustees of local organisations and encourage local people to become trustees and help their local communities. The 2 nd Swale Trustee Event is due to be held on Thursday 19 th March 6 9pm (registration from 5.30pm) at the Sheppey Little Theatre, Meyrick Road, Sheerness, Kent ME12 2NX Guest speakers, an interactive workshop delivered by Ian Childs, networking and opportunities to share your experiences and challenges of being a trustee will make up the evening. Sheppey Little Theatre was suggested by one of the delegates from the first event so we would like to encourage an organisation from Faversham to offer their venue for the 3 rd trustee network..get your thinking caps on! 2 Voluntary Sector Swale Seniors Forum Swale Seniors Forum is a non-religious, non-political, non-discriminatory, voluntary group and welcome those aged 55 upwards, from all walks of life and living in all areas of Swale. 3 Voluntary Sector INVESTING IN VOLUNTEERS Are you thinking of undertaking the IIV Quality Accreditation? Are you struggling to finance the process? GOOD NEWS - The Lloyds Bank Foundation has agreed to include IIV as part of its Enhance grants plus programme. The programme consists of two types of grants, Invest and Enable, both of which aim to provide non-financial support to charities. The Enable grant will potentially provide support to help strengthen charities which meet the programming aim, helping them to deliver their mission more effectively. 5 Voluntary Sector Volunteer Role Description Role Title: Volunteer Translator Reports to: Volunteer Co-ordinator Main Purpose of the Role To translate information and advice to clients who speak little or no English as their first language. Role Description To translate advice given by SATEDA to clients who do not speak English as their first language. To assist in the translation and production of literature provided by SATEDA for clients who read a variety of languages. To assist clients who do not speak English in accessing other services that may be available to them. To provide written information to clients who do not speak English, via the SATEDA website. Skills/Attributes required for the role Excellent written and verbal communication skills Excellent interpersonal skills Excellent attention to detail Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change Commitment and enthusiasm Ability to work alone with little instruction Ability to speak a language other than English Footnotes This role may require the holder to undertake any other duties that fall within the nature of the role and responsibilities of the role as detailed above. 11 Health Information Public consultation on Children s Community Nursing W are very interested in hearing the opinions of any of your families that may access Children s Community Nurses or have done in the past. Whilst still in the planning and consultation stage, the current proposal is to develop an integrated Children s Community Nursing service across Medway and Swale that will offer high quality care that is closer to home by providing an equitable, comprehensive, safe and sustainable child and family centered model of care for the following groups of children: Acute and short term conditions Long term conditions (specifically asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and sickle cell anaemia) Disabilities and complex continuing care conditions including neonates Life limiting and life threatening illness including palliative and end of life care If you feel that there are children, young adults (over 18) or parents and carers who may wish to discuss Children s Community Nursing, we would like to meet with them to find out their thoughts and experiences. 13 Health Information Health Walks Kent To view the latest Health Walks Newsletter and Timetable please visit: Your Health We have been working in partnership with health and other agencies to help promote physical activity, healthier lifestyles and improve health inequalities across Borough. We are working with the NHS on a life-saving campaign called 'Sittingbourne and Sheppey Beats and Breathes' to raise awareness of heart and lung disease. The population in Sheppey and parts of Sittingbourne is shown to have more occurrences of preventable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cancers. This project is looking to improve identification, capture, management and a review of two key diseases; coronary heart disease (CHD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the top two causes of preventable deaths in the Swale area. This campaign is being run in conjunction with the National Health Service Health Check campaign which aims to help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease, and invites everyone between the ages of 40 and 74 every five years for an assessment. GPs in Sittingbourne and Sheppey will be supporting this campaign by inviting sufferers of both diseases in for check up, reviewing their medication and supporting them to make lifestyle changes. This scheme encourages the residents of Swale to lead a healthier lifestyle. It is part of the Department of Health Change4Life project which is a national campaign to help people eat better, move more and live longer.
