I wanted to give an update of where we stand as a District in meeting our goals so far this year. Remember, our goals are: 300 members by March 30, 2011 Serve 5,000 reported service hours Complete and report 18 interclubs Raise $1,100 for charities Increase attendance at district events So far we have 60 dues-paid members, 156 reported service hours, and 0 reported interclubs. We also had 66 people attend Fall Service Survival Weekend, which is three times the number of people who attended last year! This confirms my belief that we will have no problem exceeding our goals. Please make an effort to report all your service hours and interclubs every month in your monthly report forms. This is very important so that our District can be well represented and no service hour goes unnoticed! Also, dues need to be paid as soon as possible. 3 Page 3 District Administrator, Mary Moore Hello Wonderful Service Survivors! I hope this finds you all very well. The new year on our campuses has already been so very busy, and the midterm is quickly approaching, and yet, we had an absolutely wonderful turn out for our annual Fall Service Madness in Branson. I cannot begin to tell everyone who participated how much the adult staff appreciates the service and fellowship displayed during FSM. I must also say a special thank you (and I hope everyone else will as well) to our District Board for the time and enthusiasm they put forth in the execution of such a fun-filled service learning adventure. So now the charge. Ready? Drum roll please... I challenge each and every one of you to get two new members in your home club and to invite those members, as well as other members who did not attend FSM, to sign up for District Convention. Our early registration will be ready soon, so be on the lookout. Talk about it at your club meetings, and more importantly, spread the CKI fever to every student on campus! 4 Page 4 Leadership Written by Summer George, District Secretary/Treasurer, UACCB Circle K Leadership comes in many forms. It can be found in politicians, students, and even the average worker. But leadership is never as inspirational as when it comes in unexpected packages. The triumphant story of an unlikely leader springing forth from a dire situation is the one that always sticks with us. It is the story that motivates others to take similar action in their own situation. Organizations like Circle K can serve as the perfect platform for a young leader to grab hold of a need and run with it. Sometimes it is even the need for an organization that draws a leader out. Take the story of Red Cross founder Clara Barton for instance. Ms. Barton began as a teacher in a man s world and became one of the first women to work for the federal government. She survived and advanced because of her drive and persistence not to let her gender limit her. Later Clara Barton spent nearly forty years delivering much needed supplies to soldiers in the heat of battle during the Civil War. Seeing the need first hand, Ms. Barton founded the Red Cross, which is committed to helping any and all in need. She ran the organization for twenty three years, never once giving up because of the difficulty. Because of Clara Barton s leadership and drive the Red Cross is a house-hold name and an organization that is providing help to millions. She never let adversity stand in her way, and because of this she is an inspirational leader. If we as Circle K members meet each hurdle in our lives with the same determination there is no reason why each of us cannot be world movers and earth shakers. Consider this as you work in your clubs and try in everything to be an inspirational leader to others. A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. John C. 5 Page 5 Club Building Written by Archie Lewallen, District Club Building Committee Chair, U of A Fort Smith Let s face it building a Circle K club can be hard, stressful, and often time consuming. There are ways to beat all three, though. One of the first things you have to have in order to build a club is student interest. Once you have a good core group of friends ready to help, you are already on your way. Outsource some of your stress to those ready and willing members. The moment you try to do it alone is the moment you miss what the organization stands for. Have a couple of people be in charge of membership recruitment, have a couple of people take care of the necessary paperwork, and have a couple of others take care of the event planning for the year. Whenever you accomplish those three obstacles you will be able to march up to that mail box with pride and stick in your letter requesting a charter, and I will be able to look forward to seeing you at District Convention. 6 Page 6 Important Dates to Remember Tomorrow Fund Deadline December 1, 2010 The Tomorrow Fund is an endowed fund for Circle K International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund, utilizing the interest earned, helps CKI clubs and districts serve the world through grants for service opportunities. Tomorrow Fund applications must be received to the Kiwanis International Office by December 1. Applications must be submitted to the Youth Funds specialist at Kiwanis International, 3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, IN 46268; or via fax at ( District Convention February 25-27, 2011 This year our District Convention will be held alongside the Missouri-Arkansas Kiwanis District Mid-Winter in Springfield, MO. There will be a talent show, informational forums, and many opportunities to mingle with fellow CKI-ers and Kiwanians! Start planning to attend now! Ask your sponsoring Kiwanis club and your school s Student Government to help with funds. This will be a weekend you don t want to miss! International Convention June 22-26, 2011 It is never too early to start planning for International Convention! This year ICON will be held in Virginia Beach, VA. Keep checking as more information becomes available.
