1 2014ANNUALREPORT Ending hunger through community partnerships!
2 FROMTHEPRESIDENT From July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014 our donors helped Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin provide nearly 12.3 million meals to those in southwestern Wisconsin who struggle with hunger. But who are the people served by Second Harvest? The results of a recent study on the impacts of hunger shows that there is no one face of hunger in southwestern Wisconsin. White, black, old, young, male, female; hunger knows no bias. When you review our 2014 Annual Report you will get just a glimpse of the struggles our clients go through every day. But you ll also hear from volunteers and agency leaders about how it feels to make a difference in the lives of our clients. While the numbers and statistics in this report tell a compelling story, they can not effectively communicate how it feels to look in the eyes of a single mother fighting back tears as she thanks you for the bag of carrots you ve just handed her. No number or graph can do that! Finally, you will notice throughout the report that we use the word our a lot. Whenever you see that, know that our does not just mean the employees or Board of Directors of Second Harvest. Our includes every individual, organization, business and school who has joined us in the fight to end hunger in southwestern Wisconsin. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has made a commitment to end hunger with their gift of money, food, time and voice! Sadly, our fight is not over. There are neighbors right here in southwestern Wisconsin who continue to struggle with hunger. But with your help we can make a difference in their lives. Together we can end hunger! Sincerely,
3 OURCLIENTS They re a Godsend. Having that smiling face and the non-judgment, and the encouragement is the biggest boost ever. They helped me re-find that passion that s gotten lost in the midst of everything. Thanks to them I m able to look in the mirror again. Jennifer Cleereman speaking about going to a Second Harvest agency OURVOLUNTEERS When I come to the pantry and see that the line is long, it tells me that we have a lot of work to do. It s right here in our community. It s real! Dan Vandekolk speaking about the need at a Second Harvest agency OURSTORIES OURAGENCIES My greatest joy is when I see people successfully transition from coming to the food pantry on a regular basis to coming sporadically because they ve found work, gone back to school, or accomplished their goals. And the best part is when those folks come back and want to volunteer, because they can truly empathize with the people we re serving. Donna Ambrose Executive Director, Caritas
