2 Today s Keynote: Bridging the Gap of Faith Community & Governmental Advocacy by David Gist, Regional Organizer Bread for the World dgist@bread.org How does Christian faith inform the sometimes controversial and often uncomfortable field of political advocacy? And how do we get beyond controversy and discomfort? When it comes to speaking out and trying to move elected leaders to do right by hungry people, what are appropriate roles for churches? These are questions we need to address in order to move forward in Arizona as a more unified body of people concerned about food and those who face hunger. Don t miss this conversation. About David: Since 2001, David has served Bread for the World as a regional organizer mobilizing faith communities to advocate around hunger and poverty. Last year, in addition to organizing in California, David became Bread s organizer for Arizona and Hawaii. Believe it or not, he is FAR more excited about visiting Arizona than Hawaii and is very pleased to be with you today. Prior to joining Bread, he worked for the UCLA Oral History program, earned a master s degree in U.S. history (specializing in political reform), and worked six years for a Nicaraguan relief and development agency based in Managua. About Bread for the World: Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. By changing policies, programs, and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to persist, we provide help and opportunity far beyond the communities in which we live. Bread activists and advocates address root causes of hunger and poverty, even amidst difficult political climates, by successfully challenging elected leaders to set aside partisan politics and work together to address hunger. 4 Today s Workshops: Food Bank Best Practices for the Handling, Storage and Distribution of Fresh Produce Location: Fenlon Hospitality Center Presented by: Dana Yost, Director of Resource Strategy, St. Mary s Food Bank Alliance. Dana manages the Food Resourcing, Logistics, and Transportation teams at St. Mary s. Contact: dlyost@firstfoodbank.org This workshop will provide participants with information about food banking best practices for the handling, storage, and distribution of fresh produce. Workshop participants will learn about the types of produce that food banks and agencies can expect to see as donations, as well as what they should expect regarding the quality of donated product. The majority of the workshop will focus on best practices for safely handling fresh produce, on tips for maximizing quality and shelf-life, and on what to look for when making decisions about what is safe and edible vs. what is not. Partnerships Against Hunger: SNAP (Food Stamps) in Arizona Location: Matthew Presented by: Amanda Lee, Outreach and Community Development Manager, Arizona Community Action Association & Donna Roberts, Hunger Relief Specialist, Arizona Department of Economic Security Contact: alee@azcaa.org and droberts@azdes.gov As a state in which 16% of its population is receiving SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps), Arizona faces a hunger crisis for its families and children. This session will focus on the context of hunger and food insecurity in Arizona, and how SNAP impacts families purchasing power for nutritious food. Attendees will gain insight into the ways organizations can battle the stigmas, application barriers, and lack of education associated with nutrition assistance and help guide families towards self-sufficiency. Hunger Through the Lens of Social Justice Location: Luke Presented by: Luke Black, Equal Voices Facilitator, Arizona Community Action Association Contact: lblack@azcaa.org What is social justice? How are hunger and social justice connected? How do we practice social justice in our work to end hunger? This workshop will outline the basic principles of social justice and their connection to ending hunger. We will explore hunger as more than putting food in the hands of families. We will explore why our efforts to end hunger in Arizona must address the political, social, and economic systems that benefit from families and communities going hungry. The workshop will offer concrete steps for making social justice an integral part of our work to end hunger. Building Community & Stocking Shelves Year-Round: The Food Neighbors Project Location: Joshua Presented by: Amy Aossey, Executive Director, Yavapai Food Council Contact: amy@yavapaifoodcouncil.org Worried about running low on shelf stable foods? Is funding for food purchases a challenge? Learn about this new project supported by nearly 900 volunteers in 10 communities providing tens-of-thousands of pounds of food to hunger-relief programs in Yavapai County. Not only that, but it may help lower costs for various meal programs. Come see how it works and learn how your community can develop its own Food Neighbors Project.

6 Help End Hunger One Plate at a Time: Did you know you can raise awareness and help end hunger in Arizona by ordering a Hunger Relief license plate? Not only that, but they ll look great on your car too! The official Arizona Hunger Relief specialty license plates can be ordered directly from or by visiting any MVD or Authorized Third Party office. The purchase of a Hunger Relief specialty license plate benefits food banks throughout Arizona that collectively serve all 15 Arizona counties. Annually, the Hunger Relief license plate costs $25 plus postage and handling. Of the $25, $17 benefits food banks throughout Arizona. Note: Specialty license plate fees are not pro-rated, therefore your new Hunger Relief license plate will renew on your next scheduled vehicle registration renewal date. You may personalize your Hunger Relief license plate. The cost of the personalized Hunger Relief license plate is $50, plus postage and handling.
