Speaking on the same subject of keeping kids alive he recounted an incident when he visited Sydney recently where he found a large number of kids begging on the street, he said they appeared to be homeless and had their heads covered, he stated that as darkness fell these kids were replace by homeless men, he said he was surprised to see this happening in our country. President Peter also spoke about the Charity dinner organised by the Rotary Club of Athens and the 24 th November Paul Harris breakfast. Dr Peter Condos spoke about his charity bike ride from Geelong to Melbourne and said it took him 7 hours to complete even though it was 6 hours of cycling! Shirley Kukk informed the members present that Jack Honson had visited Tina Mollinara and had dinner with her and Steve Chandler had contacted Neil Henderson. 3 3 th October Tuesday meeting The speakers for the day were Alistair Fraser & Lisa Lowcock on the men s shed project and the reasons why a men s shed was important to the retired men in our community. Lisa spoke first and informed the members present about changes that happen as people age especially in the brain. She said that mental health and emotional wellbeing was important to maintain good health and reminded members of the fact that most people, especially men, once they retire from work they seem to lose their identity as their work defined them and gave them a sense of purpose. Lisa also said that as people age it takes longer to recover from an illness or emotional trauma such as losing a loved one, she said that this is more predominant in men as they find it more difficult to express their feelings and this can lead to anxiety and depression. Lisa showed an overhead slide with symptoms of depression and anxiety and said that the Men s Shed was an excellent way to get older people to get together, meet and greet and have meaningful activities and the objective of the men s shed was to advance the wellbeing of male members of the community. Alistair spoke next and said how the Rotary Club of Essendon got involved in the Men s Shed project and informed members of the location and how three Rotary clubs, Essendon, Essendon North & Strathmore were involved in this project as well as the Council. He said that there is a Men s Shed Committee of Management and each club has a representative and a Council member. Alistair spoke about the operating costs and how the Council pays the operating costs, he also spoke about the ongoing implementation of occupational health safety and work cover. Alistair thanks the following members for the support they have extended to the Men s Shed during implementation and ongoing: Simon Cookson, John Odgers, Norm Mollica, Lino Airo-Farulla, Lisa Lowcock, Karen Clark, Daryl Lee & Peter Condos. Alistair said that the Men s Shed will be open on Saturday and RCE will be in charge every second Saturday from 10am to 1pm.
4 ESSENDON ROTARY BOOKCLUB note from Jane Odgers Our book club is pleased to announce that Hannie Rayson, recognised as one of Australia's most significant playwrights, will be speaking at our next meeting. Rayson's first major success was Hotel Sorrento. She has written many plays and been the recipient of a number of major awards. This year Hannie s first book Hello Beautiful was published. The book is bursting with witty anecdotes from Rayson s childhood and intelligent insights into the extraordinary moments in everyday life, her love of the Mornington Peninsula s beaches and the familiar Carlton haunt of Tiamo. Date: Wed 11 Nov Time: 7.30pm Place: Jane Carbone s: 3 Riverview Rd, Essendon Numbers are limited, but if you have read the book and would like to attend, please RSVP to jjodgers@optusnet.com.au Note from Dr Peter Condos Bill Early Trophy Ten Pin Bowls night RCE vs RC North Essendon 6.30pm Wednesday 28 th October 2015 at the High Point Bowls Centre $27 per person We need 20 Bowlers!! Peter requested the members who are attending the bowls night to please pay up before the event! Community Meeting Reminder: Community Committee meets Wednesday 14/10/15, 7pm at home of Tamara Hycenko, 2/20 Violet St Essendon Grant Sheldon Macedon Park Pty Ltd DIK Jenny Foster reminded the members that she will be working at DIK on Thursday from 9.30am onwards, she also asked whether it would be a good idea to take our exchange student Freja to Oaks day. Volunteers for Starlight Children s Foundation I look after volunteers for events for Starlight and this year we are really excited to have been chosen as the official charity partner of the 2015 Melbourne Cup Carnival. As part of this we will have hundreds of volunteers at Flemington on the major race days selling pins as part of the Pin & Win promotion. We are desperately (hopeful!) looking for more volunteers for two of the major race days (AAMI Victoria Derby Day, Saturday 31 st October) and Emirates Melbourne Cup (Tuesday 3 rd November) and I was hoping to speak with someone to see if it might be possible for some information about the volunteering opportunity to be ed out to various rotarians/clubs in the area. If a group of volunteers wanted to volunteer together for any of these days that is definitely possible and all volunteers for the morning shifts (volunteers can select either a morning or afternoon shift and can select either General Admission or Members Enclosure) will then be given a complimentary general admission ticket to the races for the day when the morning shift finishes. If there is anyone in your association that it may be possible for me to speak with about this that would be amazing! If you think you may be able to send out the information please do let me know and I can send it through. Thank you so much for your time and have a great day!! Kind Regards, Helen Parker Volunteer Coordinator National Events Starlight Children s Foundation t: (02)

7 RAWCS projects updated Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Essendon Inc. For several years the Rotary Club of Essendon has had eight projects registered with Rotary Australia World Community Service. These have all been recently reviewed to ensure they are relevant to our current activities and/or that they are still of benefit to the intended recipients. Some of the original projects were very limited in their scope and these have been re-worded or amalgamated to include a broader range of activities which should enhance the level of support to the recipients. All donations to our seven remaining projects are fully tax-deductible. When on-line donations are made a receipt is automatically ed to the donor as well as to the project manager (PM). This ensures we are fully aware of the level of donations to each project. Our nominated project managers have also been reviewed to ensure that donation information is sent to the most appropriate people. We have four projects in Kenya including the Catholic Education Centre in Embulbul (PM Glenn Smith), Obstetric Fistula (PM Tim Anderson) and NewHope for Widows and Orphans (PM John Odgers). These three projects are active and continue to receive valued donations. The fourth project, the Forest View Academy (PM Matt O Brien) is still under review with a new project being developed by the O Brien family. Our two original RAWCS projects in Myanmar both related solely to the Yangon Children s Hospital. For many years this was our flagship project but we now regularly assist a much wider range of facilities. The first project now allows for the provision of medical equipment and supplies to all hospitals and medical clinics in Myanmar (PM Tim Anderson). The second project assists the children of Myanmar through the provision of educational facilities, equipment and supplies (PM Tim Anderson) and encompasses our recent delegation s support of schools, kindergartens and orphanages. Our activities in the Philippines were also originally covered by two projects, both of which supported the street children of Manila. Bahay Tuluyan is now involved in many wide-ranging activities including rice-growing and the management of the Makabata Guest House. After review, the two projects have been consolidated into one entitled Home of our Own (PM Glenn Smith), which aims to provide support and emergency or crisis shelter for vulnerable children, on-going assistance with fit out and maintenance of buildings, and supporting projects working towards sustainability for Bahay Tuluyan. These changes should make our international projects more attractive to those seeking a tax-deductible donation. Please contact Stephen Roe if you like further information.
