1 THE ROTARY CLUB OF ESSENDON D9800 President : Lisa Lowcock ABN P.O Box 161 Essendon 3040 Australia Contact us secretary@rce.org.au and follow us on facebook Volume 80, Issue 23 2 December 2014 Editor Sunil Perera Today s guest speaker was Dr Bridie O Donnell champion rower, cyclist, media commentator and specialist in men s health at Epworth hospital. Bernadette Schwerdt introduced Dr O Donnell. Bridie O Donnell spoke about her transition from medicine to sport and then back to medicine and stated that she began to realize that most doctors work in a narrow field as they specialize and thus become experts in this field. Bridie spoke about the time she spent in Belgium engaged in competitive cycling and about cycle racing on cobblestone streets and the team sprite that existed within the team. She also provided us with an interesting insight into the different cultures in different parts of the world where she has been and by way of example stated that the Italians are warmer and open in their communication as well as brutally honest compared to the people in California who can say things they do not necessarily mean, (editor s comment, ask them the time and they will tell you how to make a watch the yanks! But we love them) Bridie also spoke about the difficulty that GPs of today experience as they do not or cannot spend enough time with their patients to ask relevant questions in order to understand the underlying issues relating to their illnesses, she stated that in her lectures to medical students at Deakin University she emphasizes on the need to have empathy and listening skills. Bridie O Donnell also stated the challenges she faces in her chosen speciality of treating high functioning men and discussing with them their health issues. Dr O Donnell stated that she is interested in what she does and takes time with her patients. Dr Bridie O Donnell delivering her most interesting talk to the members of the Essendon Rotary club
