Our speaker this week was Jacqueline Dinan who is the co author of a book titled A woman s War a mother s home-front battle. She wrote the book with husband John. A woman s war takes us into the life of a mother during the Great War. It provides a unique and intimate perspective of how she and other women of her inner- city. Working class community endured an incredibly difficult period of Australia s history and exemplified to future generation show to face hardship. This poignant and insightful story reveals tribulations and tragedies not talked about by the generations of women who followed them. Jacqueline spoke more about her research and the war period. The book seemed to be a vehicle to raise awareness of the chronological events of World War 1. Our respect and condolence go out to Jan and Rob Thomas on the passing away of Jan s mother last week. She died peacefully in Williamstown Thursday 21/10/10. Payment can be made by cheque or cash to Vic Abfalter or Glenn Smith, electronic transfer to BSB A/c or by posting a cheque to PO Box 161 Essendon Funds update: President Glenn reported that while the club has sufficient funds in the Projects Account to cover commitments the surplus is a bit lower than what we normally operate at and as such attention needs to be paid to fund raising. President Glenn also reported that the balance of the Admin Account is a bit low and this is partially attributable to some members having not yet paid their dues. This needs to be remedied asap. 3 Hi Glenn and Shirley, I am with Youth Services at Moonee Valley City Council, and am currently working on a project called 'L2P - Learner Driver Mentor Program'. L2P is a Vic Roads initiative that assists young learner drivers who face significant barriers to getting on-the-road driving experience. Volunteers and learner drivers are matched, and together they work to achieve their goal of 120 mandatory hours driving experience. In Moonee Valley this program has recently been launched with 6 mentors and young people currently matched and beginning their driving lessons. As there are many more young people needing help in getting driving experience, we need more mentors to make this happen. I thought this program may be of interest for some members of you group, and was wondering if it would be possible to either come and speak to the group about it our give some information to pass on to members? As I am looking to hold the next training session of mentors in December it would be great to tell your group about this prior to this. Wednesday 17 November Rotary Club of Central Melbourne Sunrise is hosting the Annual Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Breakfast, with Professor David de Krester, AC, Governor of Victoria as the guest speaker.
