1 President Jenny Foster 2017/18 Volume 83, Issue 4 July 25 th 2017 Secretary@RCE.org.au Jenny Foster MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: Thank you to all our Member s & Guests who attended our Club Meeting today, 25 July. How proud we all were to hear of the success of our very own Men s Shed. Please see later in this Contact issue to hear all about our speakers today & all the fantastic work that is taking place there. Past President Lisa Lowcock was during her reign as President of RCE & still is today, very passionate about this Project. Her commitment & enthusiasm to make this happen is wonderful. Today many people benefit from the work of a small group of people that had a big vision. Thank you also to Darryl Lee for his co-ordination of today s speakers & on-going work at the Men s Shed, together with our other Club Members John Odgers & Norm Mollica. An idea starts with just 1 person however that 1 person cannot do it alone. It s then the follower/s that actually makes a dream come true! This is the case with so many Rotary projects. Let s hear your dreams & how you want to Make a Difference This video was shown at the Rotary District Conference in March this year. This highlights the 1st person needs a 2nd person to join him before many more follow or you just don t succeed! First Follower: Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy YouTube I look forward to working with all our Club Members this Saturday, 29 July when we all work together at our Club Forum. Thank you one & all for taking the time to come together to plan the year ahead & into the future. Together we will Make a Difference to our own Club & to many Projects & people that we come into contact within our local community & around the world. President Jenny welcomed the following guests: Steve Holman (Men s Shed) Rod Mcleod (Men s Shed) Jan Chantry, Henry Brockman AG & Fr Joe Ruse (Guest of Dr Michael Portelli) Veronica O Sullivan reminded all present about the club forum to be held on the 29 th Saturday from 10.30am at the Education Centre St Thomas Anglican Church 760 Mount Alexander Road 10am to 4pm, she said this is a whole of club event and requested all to attend in order to develop a strong vision for our club going forward. Jenny Foster won the raffle but failed to draw the joker. Sergeant Michael announced the birthdays, Veronica O Sullivan, Peter Baker, Jenny Mann, Jane Carbone & John Chadderton, all had to pay a fine including Dennis Kosnar for being in the Rotary Club of Essendon for 20 years! Assistant Governor Henry Brockman spoke next, he spoke briefly about his young family his two daughters and son and said he was originally from Western Australia came to Melbourne after living & working overseas as well as travelling overseas for work. He said he stayed with the Rotary community throughout those years and is still enjoying Rotary. Henry asked the members to state the most important project that is important to Rotary. He said Survival is the most important project 1

2 AG Henry said that getting new members was very important and spoke about the membership going up in his club and said that we need to have our club on show. AG Henry Brockman Daryl Lee talking to members about the Men s Shed Jan Chantry Rod Mcleod & Steve Holman Men s Shed

3 Veronica O Sullivan (President Elect) PP Lisa, Fr Joe Ruso & Dr Michael Portelli The Men s Shed story & how it started Jan Chantry in her talk to the members said that she was a former MVCC Councillor for 13 years and twice Mayor, she said that during her second term Barry Coleman from Essendon North Rotary met with her and talked about starting a Men s Shed. Shortly after she said she was approached by Simon Cookson and Alistair Fraser from the Rotary Club of Essendon who also raised the idea of starting up a Men s shed. Thus began she said a long and hard fought battle to get council to allocate money in the first year s budget to undertake a feasibility study on the project. The importance was that the land was owned by the council and the land had to be reasonably flat to erect a large shed. Council then drew up concept plans (costing $60K) in the first year taking on board the feedback from users at the Men s Shed and of course the Rotarians involved. Rod Mcleod & Steve Holman - were the next speakers, they said that the membership has been levelling out as compared to 2016 in part due to the natural churn and in part due to the fee structure and it is time to push for new members. They said their first activity was a market stall at Bunnings Coburg. They also mentioned that the members wellbeing was primary and varied and interesting activities are designed to provide satisfying and challenging tasks. Furthermore they said that the Man s Shed was involved in the MVCC community projects as well as supporting local organisations and of course providing a source of income to maintain the shed. Rod & Steve presented several items of work done at the Men s shed and said that they are for sale after the meeting, they also showed several items that were produced for various organisations including St Aidens Kindergarten, SCC Storage cupboards, coffee tables & wall units. They said that the Brite Services from where they obtain wood provided employment to approximately 200 disabled persons. Rod thanks the Volunteers: Steve Holman, Greg Smith, Daryl Lee, Richard Grabowski, Rod Mcleod, John Cardwell & Ian Archer.

The Gazelle woke up knowing that to survive the day it had to be able to outrun every Lion. The Lion woke up knowing that to survive and feed his family he needed to run faster than the slowest Gazelle. The message is simple, it doesn't matter whether you are a Lion or a Gazelle, every morning when you wake up you better get running" 'Every day's a great day - if you don't believe me, try missing one.'
