2 AIMS Victoria Chair s Report March Benchpress 2015 Dear Colleagues, Welcome to 2015 it is March already, and your Victorian Branch committee have been actively working on plans for a busy year, scientifically and socially. Our first major activity for the year is a combined AIMS-AACB weekend scientific meeting at the Cumberland Lorne Resort on The Great Ocean Rd, on May 2 nd 3 rd. Our committee are excited about this opportunity to work with the AACB to organise what we expect will be an excellent scientific program for members of both Societies. This meeting provides an opportunity to bring together our Professional Societies, both at the committee and executive level, and across our broader State membership. The Pathology Industry suffers at times, for being somewhat fragmented, and the more we can do to overcome this fragmentation, the better off our Profession will be. We see combined meetings being the way of the future. Our sponsors have voted with their feet. We opened up the Sponsorship Prospectus in early December, and all trade tables (10 in total) were sold out before Christmas. This is an excellent result and really does tell us something about the opportunities combined meetings provide us. We hope our membership from both AIMS & the AACB, and non-members, see this as an exciting opportunity to attend also. Most of the program has now been finalised, & I trust you agree that is an interesting multi-disciplinary program that will attract you to register and attend. Lorne is a lovely place to visit in Autumn, there will be a conference dinner organised on the Saturday night, and other social opportunities are planned for the Saturday afternoon following the final presentation that day. The flyer, containing the program and registration details, can be found in this Edition. The Victorian Branch are also very pleased that our nomination last year, for the 2015 Travelling Orator was accepted. I m sure everyone would agree that Geoff Magrin will fulfil this role admirably throughout the year. Geoff has a long standing reputation for giving back to his profession, and this will continue this year, via his oration on The Art of Transfusion and its Complexities across the country. For further details, I refer you to the announcement on page 3 in this edition. The various local Special Interest Group meetings will be very active again throughout the year, most of which will be advertised here in BenchPress. The Haematology Discussion Group, in particular, under the convenor Steve Schischka, have a full program of monthly meetings planned, across various laboratories in Melbourne throughout the year. Refer the schedule advertised in this month s Benchpress on page 10. Last year s HDG meetings were very well attended, often more than 50 delegates attending, so I hope this attendance continues this year. Finally, I d like to highlight another major event being planned for later in the year. This year, 2015 marks the 50 th anniversary of Medical Laboratory Science at RMIT. This presents a wonderful opportunity to celebrate this momentous occasion the AIMS Victorian Branch are working with RMIT to organise a Gala Ball for later in the year, likely November. Plans are well underway, and I expect we will formally announce details of when, where and how this AIMS Gala Ball to Celebrate 50 Years of Medical Laboratory Science at RMIT will be held, soon. 3 TRAVELLING ORATOR 2015 The AIMS Travelling Orator is a senior Member of the Institute with acknowledged expertise in his or her field. AIMS is delighted to announce that Geoff Magrin FAIMS has been appointed the 2015 AIMS Travelling Orator. Geoff has a long and distinguished career in medical science, particularly in immunohaematology. Geoff started at RMIT in 1973 as a full time student and commenced work as a trainee scientist at the Royal Southern Memorial Hospital (now Caulfield General Medical Center) in November He obtained his Associate Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science in 1977 majoring in Haematology and completed the degree conversion in 1978 majoring in Immunohaematology, the first year of the degree course. In 1978 he took over as the grade 2 scientist in the blood bank section of the laboratory. From there he transferred to the Alfred hospital in 1983 after achieving his Fellowship of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (FAIMS) and took up the grade 2 scientist role at the Alfred. Geoff worked at the Alfred until 2012 being promoted regularly and was the Principal scientist in Haematology from 2008 until He has been able to pursue his love of science with each new innovation. The variety of the work and challenges has allowed him to publish, teach and present. Possessing a wealth of management experience and providing leadership in the field of blood transfusion and laboratory haematology, Geoff has a proven ability to develop and implement new ideas, consistently presenting at local and overseas conferences. He is adaptable and innovative with communication skills that are recognized throughout the industry and he is sought out as an invited speaker. He has achieved recognition in the field of immunohaematology, which is acknowledged by membership of advisory committees to the state government of Victoria (BeST and STIR), Royal College of Pathologists Australia (RCPA) transfusion quality assurance program, accreditation boards in Australasia (NATA & IANZ) and he is also a member of the RMIT University, Medical laboratory Science Advisory Committee. Geoff is committed to both his own continuing education and to educating medical scientists in general, enabling the best level of technical competence for the deliverance of excellence in patient care. Geoff will present The Art of Transfusion and its complexities as Travelling Orator. The presentation will cover the technical aspects in the lab, storage and transport issues, Haemovigilance and education needed to comply with Standard 7.
