Carry the A.A. Message Join the fun and submit an A.A. article on either your experience, strength and hope or A.A. Marion County history or A.A. trivia Step 1 We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable. Tradition 1 Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon A..A. unity. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tradition check Am I in my group a healing, mending, integrating person, or am I divisive? What about gossip and taking other members inventories? Am I gentle with those who rub me the wrong way, or am I abrasive? Am I as considerate of A.A. members as I want them to be of me? A Declaration of Unity This we owe to A.A. s future; To place our common welfare first; To keep our fellowship united. For on A.A. unity depend our lives; And the lives of those to come.
2 The Voice January 2019 Page 2 District 17 News Message from Max R DCM Always inclusive. Never exclusive Happy New Year! If you re not already, it s a great time to get into a service position in your group, the Central Office, or AA General Service in our local District 17. All you have to do is show up and say, Put me to work. Along with 12 members of the local fellowship and approximately 300 other AAs from nearby fellowships, I had the privilege to start off the new year by attending the North Florida Area Assembly of AA in St. Augustine, January 5-6. It s like a group conscience meeting on a larger scale, and it s where your group s General Service Representative (GSR) can express your group conscience in decisions about how AA operates worldwide, including topics like new literature or changes, our online presence, conventions, AA finances, and more. GSRs from nine out of our 50+ local groups attended. That placed our district in the top three in terms of representation out of the 33 districts present, an important demonstration of unity. Our voice becomes even stronger as more groups send representatives. There s also a great need for more AAs to become involved in service work right here in Ocala and Marion County. Come to the next District 17 meeting on January 31 and lend your experience, strength and hope. Inspiration from Bill W The January Assembly was the first for our newly elected slate of Area and District officers and service coordinators who ll serve for the next two years. It also marked the introduction of the new theme that will inspire our service structure during that time: Always Inclusive. Never Exclusive. That theme is taken from a 1965 Grapevine article written by Bill W and expresses the essence of our Third Tradition. It s worth repeating here: Newcomers are approaching A.A. at the rate of tens of thousands yearly. They represent almost every belief and attitude imaginable. We have atheists and agnostics. We have people of nearly every race, culture and religion. In A.A. we are supposed to be bound together in the kinship of a common suffering. Consequently, the full individual liberty to practice any creed or principle or therapy whatever should be a first consideration for us all. Let us not, therefore, pressure anyone with out individual or even our collective views. Let us instead accord each other the respect and love that is due to every human being as he tries to make his way toward the light. Let us always try to be inclusive rather than exclusive; let us remember that each alcoholic among us is a member of A.A., so long as he or she so declares. Mark your Calendars * District 17 Meeting 6:45pm, Thursday, January 31, at Unity Place, 525 NE Sanchez Ave, Ocala. AA Service Manual study group starts at 6pm. 4 The Voice January 2019 Page 4 NOTICE TO ALL A.A. MARION COUNTY GROUPS Let us know when you are having a Group Anniversary, special event, workshop, etc so can publish in The Voice, on our website, and we can spread the word. aaocalamarion@gmail.com OR CALL Big Thank you to Arlene H, who volunteered to answer our 24-Hour phone line through the Christmas and New Year s holidays. Great service Arlene and much appreciated by Central Office!! Arlene shares how service has enriched her sobriety. I got sober in 1977 and when I was two weeks sober, I got the job of Greeter at my meeting. Because of this service, I came of my shell and didnt think about me all time. The next service job was Coffee & Ashtrays (back then you could smoke at meetings) and I was told SERVICE, SERVICE, SERVICE. After three months, I was asked to speak at a Speaker meeting. I was terribly nervous, but after I spoke, I was serene and god-centered and Still Sober. My self-esteem was on the rise. After a year in A.A., I volunteered for Intergroup Rep, Treasurer for my group, and Chaired meetings. I have gone on to be a GSR, PIPC, Grapevine Rep and when I moved to Naples, FL, I was the Office Manager for Intergroup for ten years. Over these past holiday weekends, I was in pain with my sciatica, but answering the phones for A.A. took me outside myself and I continue to experience a grateful and happy sobriety. Doing service has contributed to my long-term sobriety. Thank you God.
