Blood drive As you already know, WGC Member Dave Conway had asked the membership to help with a blood drive to assist in replenishing the 110 units of blood that he was given while in the hospital. To that request the club sponsored the Red Cross June 26 th blood drive that was held at the 1 st Baptist Church in Boone. We had 12 volunteers/donors stay or come by the June 26 th blood drive. Thank you to Greg Breitenbeck, Gary Hoyle, Sandra Hoyle, Bill Krupicka, Dan Lofaro, Doug Merkel, Arvin Pearson Daniel Pendergast, Keith Prager, Angie Turrisi, Bill Walker III and Bill Walker IV for volunteering and or donating! The drive had 38 people sign up with 35 that actually showed up giving a total of 28 successful donations. This is great! Dan Lofaro registering For those of you who were unable to make it to the June 26 th event, there are additional blood drive busses where you can still make donations to get us to the 110 unit goal. The other dates for these blood drive busses are: September 8 th, 2018 September 15 th, 2018 Donors may go online to make an appointment at redcrossblood.org or call And please keep your appointment when you make it. There will be a banner at our club meetings for those who have either volunteered or donated to sign that we will present to Dave Conway. We will have the banner at the club meetings until the October club meeting to allow for those to donate and have opportunity to sign the banner. Although volunteer participation appeared low, the Executive Committee remains optimistic that there will be WGC members who will donate at the additional dates. Please help us keep tally of who has donated for the unit count and to make sure you get opportunity to sign the banner, or at least get your name on the banner. To do this please contact Angie Turrisi at scrappinganagie@gmail.com Annual Club Picnic The Annual Club Picnic was held at the July Club Meeting Night. There was a short business meeting. The grilled sandwiches with fixings were provided by the club! The members brought the rest. There was a great turn out with lots of visiting, laughter and fun. 2 Membership Dues Gate card not working? Here s why. Gate cards have been turned off for those who have not paid their membership dues and completed the required annual range briefing and annual club meeting by now. It s an easy fix y all! You can still pay your dues, attend your meetings (annual range briefing and one annual club meeting) and access will be reinstated! Easy as that! Make payable to WGC and mailed to our PO Box, ATTN Treasurer. Or better yet come to the next club meeting. We d LOVE to see you! Have several? Would you like to shoot your rifle(s) more often? If so, the Club hosts monthly, friendly-competition matches offering that opportunity. Safety First: It s everyone s responsibility. All gun-safety rules as outlined in the Watauga Gun Club Range Manual apply. Eyes and Ears. Muzzle awareness! When: Be sure to check the club calendar! Year round on the second Sunday at 1PM. Where: 300 yd Covered Rifle Range The Match: Cost is $5/gun Course of Fire: o Targets: NRA A yd Small Bore 3-Bullseye Target and Eight inch aiming bull, one inch X-ring. o Time/Flight: 27 minutes total. o Unlimited sighters allowed on SS-Bull. o Record shots: 20 shots; 10 shots on Bull #1 and 10 shots on Bull #2 o Possible Score: 200/200, 20Xs, 20 Center Shots Match Scores: Published on WGC Website. Multiple flights and multiple rifles permitted. o Shoot several rimfire rifles. o One rifle/class o You may shoot a light-rifle in heavy-rifle class, but you may not shoot a heavy rifle in light rifle class. Bench Rest: Front and rear rifle support allowed. One piece sighting rests (e.g. Lead Sled or Site Vise ) not allowed. The Rifles: 22 LR; 22WM; 17 Class (.17HMR,.17WSM,.17HM2); Bolt action (single-shot or magazine fed), falling-block, semi-auto magazine fed are allowed. Popular rifles include: Anschutz (54, 64), CZ (452, 453, 455), Kimber (82G), Remington (37, 513T, 521, 541S, 504), Ruger (10/22, 77, American), Russian IZH, Savage, Winchester (52, 75). With the right ammunition, these rifles have proven capable of holding groups of one-inch/10 shots. Note: in our match history, no shooter has succeeded in shooting a 20X target. Scopes: Generally, 9X or greater magnification, Most shooters scopes are 16X or greater. Popular brands: Leupold, Weaver, Bushnell, Nightforce. Classes: o Heavy Rifle >8.5 lbs (Scope Sight; Aperture Sight) o Light Rifle - <8.5 lbs (Scope Sight; Aperture Sight) o Open Sight Class, no magnification, no aperture, any weight rim fire rifle Ammunition: Bring 50 rounds/gun; Popular brands: CCI Standard Velocity, Eley (various grades), Lapua (various grades), Wolf, Federal (Gold Medal Match, Ultra-Match), SK (various grades). If you have any issue, you may call Bill Hollingsworth at (828) Women on Target Clinic in June 15 ladies attended from the neighboring counties mostly but some from off the mountain also. Great group. At least half of them are members or have connections to members. Gary and I are most grateful to our staff, as usual. Special thanks to them. This year we used the supplies on hand so have depleted some of the surplus that NRA usually sends. This will help with storage issues in the office. The major expenses for this event are the catered lunch, advertising, targets, and ammunition. The firearms are provided by members and others (thanks to Bill Hollingsworth for use of the WHS guns). The ammunition comes from members also, primarily, Rickey Oakes. He always supported this event with ammo and expertise and we really missed him this year. Last fall he gave us enough 22 ammo to do the event this year. Shotgun ammo was mostly from our NRA grant supplies received in And shotgun targets came from the Trap folks. The advertising was a display ad in 5 local papers for 3 weeks prior to the event. ~Denmother 3 P age

4 Finance Committee Forming: The executive committee is forming an Finance committee. For those of you that would have time and knowledge of finances please contact Bill Walker IV at Monthly Club Meetings Monthly meetings are held the 2 nd Thursday of each month at 7pm. Prior to each meeting the required safety briefing class is held beginning 5:30 pm. And don t forget that you can participate in the club match also on these nights from 5 to 6:30 pm finishing before club meeting begins. It s time to be thinking and nominating people for the positions in the Executive committee. Elections will be held at the December meeting. So be thinking and sending your nominations to the current President, Morgan Shaw, or the Secretary, Bob Meyerhoff. WebMaster Needed WGC is looking for a member who is willing to tackle the webpage maintenance. Management of the site involves monthly maintenance of the postings to minutes, newsletters, club match results, and rimfire match results for pistol and benchrifle. Additionally are annual adjustments for elected club officers and infrequent updates for specially scheduled events or urgent notices. The current site is managed on the Serif WebPlus X8 software. This is a WYSIWYG website builder that is reasonable easy to learn to use. It has many attractive features, add-ons, etc. to make the job easier and the site attractive. Check out the current website at and let us know if you re interested in looking deeper into this project. Serious offers only, please. New Membership Coordinator Needed Duties Include Distribute mailings; postal &/or notices of annual renewals or membership meeting issues Membership database maintenance Record meetings attendance; orientations, renewal refreshers, and member meetings. Enter new membership information; edit existing as required Produce & issue membership packets (member card, badge, stickers, labels, etc.) Assign & update gate access through TruPortal security system Maintain a working relationship with the Freedom Tech personnel who oversee the security system (cameras, gates, doors, badge access system). Receipt payments; memberships, range fees, etc. (w/treasurer) Monitor shared deposits log w/treasurer to receipt payments for mailed renewals Update & non- lists monthly to the shared DropBox folder w/publicity Officer Coordinate database corrections as identified w/publicity Officer Monitor for memberships@wataugagunclub.com Computer software/systems used are Microsoft Access, Word, and Excel; DropBox; gmail and personal providers; TruPortal gate & door security system access. This position on the executive committee is open for election every year. The current officer is not willing to continue in this capacity for 2019 but will assist the replacement to ease into the role if/as needed. Please thoughtfully consider this opportunity of an active role in the club s executive function.

This included staff and safety officers among who several did not shoot the match for one reason or another. We also had 1 person who did not finish the match due to health reasons and 2 who were disqualified for equipment reasons. With 11 stages and that many shooters, we had approximately 185 rounds per shooter so well over 32,000 rounds down range and ZERO injuries or incidents. Many, many good comments were received on the match. We always get great comments on the golf course condition of the range and several who say they come for the food. Of course, the costs for everything increased, but our entry fee did not, so we expect to be closer on the expenses vs. income then previous years. We re still waiting for the final bills to come in for the port-o-jons and a couple other things. Our annual report will be submitted in November after our final local match in October. Membership Coordinator Report Memberships are fairly fluid from one year to the next. We have our general core of members who renew every year. We also have those who join, are regulars for a while then drop out for a year or two and come back. Generally, those who do not regularly renew are replaced with new members, so there is no appreciable difference in the total annual numbers. This year we have had a small decrease in numbers. We had 291 members at the end of 2017 and have 279 members currently for Down by 12 memberships this year which as full memberships would equate to a decrease of $1,800 to the memberships income for 2018 at this point. From July- December we prorate the dues so this deficit would take 15 full memberships to overcome. With the family membership policy in place, we have 24 members on family memberships for 2018, which is 12 full memberships and 12 half-price memberships. 46 new members in 2018; 7 of those were added as family members.
