1 Talking Turkey The Pitt County Wildlife Club Newsletter February Welcome to the February edition of Talking Turkey. Please take a moment to read our newsletter and stay informed of the various events and opportunities awaiting you at the club this month. Membership Meeting 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 16 The February General Membership Meeting will be held at Rock Springs Center. Dinner is served at 7:00 PM. The program will be on Archery by Joe McMillan. Joe will discuss the different types of archery related events that the club will host in the near future. Field Notes...From Club President, Lee Grubb I can't believe it...we have almost made it. We are only a month away from springtime and I am excited about all of the different activities we have going on at the club. We have had record breaking attendance at our different club sponsored matches and things can only get better as the weather improves. We are still trying to iron out all of the details with the clubhouse construction and at this point we are continuing to solicit information from the county and different builders and engineers on what our best options are. I will be sure to keep you posted as things unfold and please come out on the 16th for some great food and fellowship. Please send your addresses to stevencerutti@yahoo.com to get you uploaded to the webmail server. Thank you. Work Day Work Day is scheduled for Saturday, February 18, 8:00 AM. Activities will include continued cleanup of the club grounds and structures in the wake of the destruction of Hurricane Matthew's subsequent flooding. We will also be changing backer boards, picking up trash, emptying garbage cans, etc. This month s workday coordinator will be Mark Harrington. PCWC on Facebook PCWC has a MEMBER ONLY Facebook page. It can be found by going to Facebook and searching "PITT COUNTY WILDLIFE CLUB-MEMBERS FORUM". This is another place to stay in touch with the club, current events and events that are coming up. It was set up just for current members to share their own pictures and experiences and the club. Check it out if you are a Facebooker. 2 2 Carolina Outdoor Expo After sorting out some unfortunate confusion on the part of the event organizers regarding passes for our volunteers, the event was a success. Thanks to all the members who volunteered their time to make it happen, especially Woody Andrews and Joe Cavanaugh. Club Ammo Sale For information and sales, contact Lenn Norment, (252) Special Instruction for Beginning or New Shooters On the first Sunday of each month, beginning at 2:00 PM, special instruction for new shooters will be offered at the club. Bring your bagged, unloaded handgun to Range 4; if you do not have a handgun don't worry, we will furnish firearms. Please call Rick Brixon at (252) if you plan to attend. This is a free service open to the public. Please bring factory ammunition for whatever caliber firearm you are bringing or are interested in shooting. Usually we provide handguns chambered in.22lr,.380, 38 special, 9mm, and 45acp. Handguns provided include a mix of revolvers and semi automatic pistols. NRA Certified Range Officers and Pistol Instructors will be on hand to assist at all levels. A great opportunity to improve your handgun techniques! Safety First At PCWC, we allow members to carry concealed and open carry firearms while at the club. Along with this privilege comes personal responsibility. Loaded handguns should only be unholstered or handled at the firing line. Unloaded handguns may be unholstered, holstered, or handled at either a firing line or one of the four (4) marked Safety Areas on the club grounds. Do not handle unholstered handguns at your personal vehicle. No handling of ammunition (including snap-caps) is allowed in the designated Safety Areas. Please remember, it is the responsibility of all club members to report egregious safety violations when they witness them by notifying the club President Lee Grubb, any Board Member, Chief Range Safety Officer, or Range safety Officer. Special Reminder Membership and Guest Badges Please make sure that you and your guests prominently display membership and guest badges at all times when you are on the club grounds. The badges are needed to help us identify members and guests alike to ensure that all persons on the club grounds are members or guests. In addition, if you bring a guest to the club, please make sure you both complete the liability waiver form located in the box on Range 7 when signing in your guest(s). Range Attention Needed Recently, we have noticed a significant increase in the amount of spent center fire shell casings left on the ranges. This seems to be a problem on the new ranges as well as the old ranges. Please make sure that you clean up after yourself. Leaving the spent shell casings is a safety hazard and a violation of the Club SOPs. We have also seen an increase in the number of unfired bullets left on the ranges. We all need to make sure that we leave the range in a clean and safe condition for other members to enjoy. I presume that the overwhelming majority of you do clean up after yourself and we all appreciate your efforts. If you notice people not cleaning up, please remind them in a friendly and professional way. The range we clean up is after all, our own range. 2

3 3 First Aid Boxes All members should have keys to the first aid boxes on the ranges. We ask that you check your key copy to make sure that it does in fact open the padlock. Checking the padlock on one range should suffice. If your key does not work the lock, contact Rick Brixon (252) , or Also be reminded that AED boxes are on Range 6 and inside the clubhouse. Standard Operating Procedures: A Reminder Please remember that eye and ear protection must be worn at all times on the ranges when firearms are in use. Please remember that firearms and ammo cannot be handled when others are downrange. Do not affix or prop up any type of target to the vertical backer board posts. The posts may not be used to hold up any type of target, paper or steel. Calendar of Events Board Meeting Thursday, February 2, 7:00 PM. Garand Shoot Saturday, February 4. Registration at 8:00 AM. New Shooters Clinic Sunday, February 5, 2 PM, Range 4. Trap Shoot Sunday, February 12 at 12:30 PM. Open to the public. $5 per round. If you need a shotgun to try out your Trap skill or for more information, please contact Joe Cavanaugh at (252) , or Jim Hart at (919) (Trap Range only). Membership Meeting Thursday, February 16. Work Day Saturday, February 18 at 8:00 AM. Immediately following workday activities there will be the monthly Concealed Carry Pistol Match, set-up at 12:30. Match begins at 1:00. For more information contact Bill Young (252) D Archery Tournament Sunday, February 19. There will be a 3D archery shoot and it will shut down the facility for the day. ALL RANGES CLOSED. USPSA Match Saturday, February 25, beginning with set-up at 8:00 AM. Registration opens at 9:00 AM. Match begins at 10:00 AM.
