1 ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF POMONA VALLEY Today s Volunteers Meeting the Needs of Tomorrow SEPTEMBER BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Sharon Goodrich 1 st VP Membership Cathy Harden 2 nd VP Philanthropies Robbie Larson 3 rd VP Resource Development Lisa Frazier Treasurer Jessica Ortega Recording Secretary Lynne Kirchhoff PRESIDENT S MESSAGE September. The ninth month in Corresponding Secretary Public Relations Strategic Planning Chapter Liaison Maria Craig Carol Holmes Michelle Williams Kathy Jarvis The first month of doing business in for Assistance League of Pomona Valley. Or is it?? Actually, that is no longer the case because many of our members have been busy with chapter activities since June. We have as many members available in June, July and August as are available in October or February or May. We have families who need our services twelve months of the year. We provide school clothing to children during their school year but NOT before districts open their doors. Children have toothaches in July and August. Children are traumatized year round. Women, teens and children are sexually assaulted year round. SO, it is no longer the case that we do no business or have the summer off. Members have shopped, folded and stocked shelves for Operation School Bell. They have received donations for the Community Clothes Closet that required laundering and hanging. Hygiene Packs and Assault Survival Kits have been assembled. Bookshelves have been assembled and anchored to walls. The attic and other storage areas have been emptied and reorganized. Chapter policies and some procedures have been rewritten. Our website has been updated. Initial contacts for our Book Drive have been taken with our college/university partners. The plans are well underway for our Festive Fall Tea and Bake Sale scheduled for October 5 th. And as you read this newsletter, three of our members are in Orlando attending the Assistance League s National Conference. My report on Chapter activities at the June Annual Meeting included the following: the Dental Center was open 81 days and served 516 students with 1500 treatments. OSB and CCC provided clothing, books and hygiene packs to 320 families with 883 Kindergarten-6 th grade children, plus 120 families on an emergency basis plus 80 packages for summer use in Pomona USD. We collected over 2300 books. We received an alltime high in response to the Helping Hands solicitation. Our 15 th Annual Golf Tournament brought in funds to advance chapter philanthropic programs. But all of these totals were This is now Let s make EVERY day and EVERY project and EVERY activity count. THERE ARE NO DO-OVERS. Page 1

2 MEMBERSHIP Hope everyone has had a relaxing and rejuvenating summer! Our first meeting of the year is approaching fast and I hope you are as excited as I am for our very first Box Lunch Social. Remember you can use any container of choice (I have also left some in the chapter house if you want to swing by and pick one up). You can make anything you want sandwich, pasta salad, salad, fruit salad, fruit, dessert etc. Please clearly mark if your lunch has nuts or eggs as we have a few members with allergies. Drinks and a dessert will be provided by the lunch committee but please feel free to include a dessert in your lunch that can be enjoyed later. RSVP to me by Friday, September 5th, yes or no if you will be attending the meeting. ~Cathy Harden catbrat63@yahoo.com PUBLIC RELATIONS As you read this months newsletter Cathy Harden, Jessica Ortega and I will be attending National Conference 2014 at Hilton Bonnet Creek in Orlando, Florida. All remaining open slots will be offered to our Tea Guests for purchasing on the date of the Tea. Lupe Barker has graciously agreed to make the flowered centerpieces for each table, as she has done in the past. I look forward to having a great Festive Fall Tea and working with everyone towards a successful and profitable outcome. Since I will be unable to attend the September 9 th General Meeting, I invite anyone who has any questions or needs to reach me to contact me at either of the following addresses: lisa.frazier1@verizon.net or Lisa.Frazier@skadden.com. You may also call me during the day Monday through Friday at (213) or at any other time on my cell at (909) Thank you to all for your assistance! With much appreciation and fondness, ~ Lisa Frazier PHILANTHROPIC Assault Survivor Kits Delivered Project Sister contacted us in July to let us know they were completely out of Assault Survivor Kits. We had delivered 50 kits to them in March, so we were caught a bit off guard by another request so soon. However, within just a few days we were able to shop for and assemble all of the needed supplies (thanks to those who were able to help on such short notice) and Carole Lyles and her husband Milt delivered the kits to Project Sister s offices where they were gratefully received. Operation School Bell Much shopping, sorting, folding and hanging has occurred over the summer to get us ready for our first distribution on September 17 th. Stephanie, Sally, and their helpers have done an incredible job getting through mounds and mounds of Community Closet donations in addition to acquiring and organizing scores of boxes of new clothing. Our contacts with local schools to pick up their lost-and-found jackets at the end of the school year has resulted in an ample supply of very nice gently used outerwear. In fact, after seeing the quality of many of the items lost by students, I m sure there are many annoyed parents out there somewhere. Additionally and mostly thanks to our facilities chairs Keith and Nitzi Barker, major cleanup has occurred in our work area. The old rickety wood shelving that usually contained various miscellaneous stuff are gone.the stuff discarded or donated. In their place is nice sturdy metal shelving that is being used for the hundreds of books that Claudia has collected and organized.and my understanding is there are more books to come! Claudia has partnered with several local colleges and universities to provide students with the opportunity to donate children s books to our program. Stephanie and Sally will be announcing additional work days at our September General meeting. We will also be looking for people to help with distribution on September 17 th, including someone specifically to handle distribution of the books. Hygiene Kits We will need to assemble 100 Operation School Bell Hygiene Kits before the September 17 th distribution date. Robbie has already counted out and organized the required supplies so all we need to do is assemble the kits. Assembly is planned for 8:30 am on September 9 th, just prior to our General Meeting. If you can come to the meeting early to help with the assembly, please let Robbie know at Robbie.larson.2007@gmail.com. Six or so people would be ideal. Dental Center The Dental Center is gearing up for opening day, September 16 th. Additional Dental Center news will be shared at the September meeting. ~Robbie Larson Page 4

5 Hafif Concert Fundraising Success! School is Back And So Are We!! Our first delivery for Operation School Bell for the school year is September 17 th. A sign-up sheet will be available at our meeting on the 9 th. We will have our folding work party on Friday, September 12 th from 9 AM until 12:30 PM. Please feel free to contact Stephanie if you are able to contribute your time to this volunteer effort. During the summer Sally has managed to get Community Closet organized with help from Judy Jones, Robbie Larson, the Barkers and Barbara DeHaan. As usual there is always more to do so our volunteer efforts will be spread between our philanthropies. The Barkers have been a huge help readying bookcases for all the books we will be collecting and getting more needed racks for our merchandise. Big Thanks to all that have helped, Stephanie Roberts Sally Boyd Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets and/or attended the Hafif Concerts held in July and August. We sold a total of 41 tickets for a surplus of $2,255. Not bad for a nice evening out with friends. I ended up with conflicts for both concert nights so was not able to attend this year, but I ve heard from those that did attend that things went smoothly. We ve been selling tickets to these concerts for about 5 years, and up to this time have sold the tickets to ourselves and our friends. For the first time, this year we were contacted by two outside parties who found our name on the Hafif Foundation website and inquired about purchasing tickets. One of the parties fell through, but we were successful at selling 7 tickets to the Safelite Window Repair staff out of Ontario. This resulted in an extra $385 in sales and I believe we will be able to sell to this same group in the future. Besides the extra funds, this is good publicity for ALPV and our philanthropies. A few people have not yet turned in their ticket money. Of the $2,255 surplus, $605 is still outstanding. Please plan to turn in all outstanding money at the September 9 th General Meeting or, if you cannot attend the meeting, please mail your check to Jessica so we can close out the books on this event.
