Daylight savings ends in a week and our Festive Fall Tea is upon us. I hope everyone has signed up and is ready to work, work, work. The reservations are pouring in so if you have not made yours yet please let Lisa Frazier know ASAP. Padua Hills was a truly wonderful and lovely event. Thank you to all who put in so much time and effort to make this a success. We had delicious wine, yummy food and great entertainment (thanks CA Jazz Arts Society). Even the local residents enjoyed the evening, Cinnamon Bear and her 2 friends loved not only all the company and music but also thought the food was quite delicious. We had our first Operation School Bell Delivery for the year on October 5 th and it was a busy busy day. Stephanie Roberts greeted everyone with her customary warmth and beautiful smile and David Frazier had Community Closet stocked and ready to go. We had lots of happy and smiling shoppers all day long. Normally we will have a slight lull but not this time, it was everyone on deck from the time the doors opened until they closed at 4 p.m. A special thank you to Milt Lyles for always manning the door with a smile and a kind word and to our very own Mary Hernandez for helping with the forms needed for CDBG. You make our delivery days much easier. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 1 st at 9:30 a.m. and I hope to see all of you there. ~Cathy Harden Page 1
2 UMEMBERSHIP Welcome to Fall from Membership!! Please update your rosters (please see Roster Changes below) to add another NEW MEMBER!! Nisha Cha. Yipppeeee!!! Nisha came to us through Volunteermatch.org. She was at our last meeting and is looking forward to jumping in with both feet. She had a beautiful smile on her face through the whole meeting!! Love that winning attitude!! Lastly, please don't forget to RSVP to me by Friday, October 28 th for lunch at our November 1 st meeting. Thank you to the meal committee (Lynne, Loie, Kathee E. and Jacquie) for sponsoring our meal!! That's it for now...toodles!! ~ Kim Parra UCORRESPONDING SECRETARY Birthday wishes will be sent to Karen Procsal, who has a birthday on the 21 st of this month. Acknowledgement and thank you sent to Rock of the Foothills for their donation and continued support. ~Kathee Elliott UDENTAL CENTER The Dental Center staff provided a tour of the facility for the Pomona Unified School District Health Service Assistants. Carole and Stephanie graciously hosted the Health Assistant meeting on October 21 st at the Chapter House to highlight the Dental Center and Operation School Bell. This past month the Dental Center served 30 patients, 5 new patients and provided 43 treatments. ~Jane Hubbard HEADQUARTERS We have gotten the trees trimmed and all the branches cleared away. Thanks to Roger, Jessica, Louis (Jess s husband) and their daughter. We will start getting estimates regarding the black top in the parking lot and painting the outside of the Chapter House and Dental Center. Stay tuned for a work day to be scheduled in the near future. ~Nitzi and Keith Barker UAUXILIARY Our meeting will be Wednesday, November 2 nd, 11:00 a.m. at Mt. San Antonio Gardens, Bldg B. ~Susan Brinkama FALL TEA FUNDRAISER The tea is less than a week away and we still need help. The work schedule is as follows: Wednesday, November 2 nd, 2:30 pm: at the Chapter House to pick up supplies and transport them to Ebell. We will set up the tables and chairs. On Thursday, November 3 rd, 9:30 am to 5 pm: set up for tea and Opportunity Baskets. Please bring a sack lunch since, as of October 25 th, there are only 9 people setting up, and every minute is needed to make the room look splendid. Friday, November 4 th, 1 pm 5 pm: TBA. I will send out an if this time is needed; hopefully we can complete all that needs to be done on Thursday. Saturday, November 5 th : TBA. I will announce at the meeting as we still need someone to chair the bake sale and we desperately need homemade baked goods. Sunday, November 6 th, 8:30 am until we are done packing and transporting all supplies back to the Chapter House. All Opportunity Basket goodies need to be at the Chapter House by the meeting on November 1 st or, at the latest, by 9:30 am, Thursday November 3 rd at Ebell. The raffle gifts (something valued from $15 to $20) can be brought to the meeting or to the tea if you are attending. We still need volunteers, so if you have not signed up please contact me. ~Nitzi Barker Roster Changes Active: Nisha Cha 1427 Jellick Ave #A Rowland Heights Ca nishajcha96@gmail.com Birthday 7/4 (Bet she always gets fireworks on her bday!!) 3 OPERATION SCHOOL BELL October 5, 2016 was our first major Operation School Bell delivery of this school year. David Frazier, Nitzi and Keith Barker had Community Closet ready set for the families. There are several bags of clothing left that still need to be addressed. David will need our help getting items ready for our next delivery. Look for a blast from Kellie for this and upcoming Hygiene Kit preparation; we will tie this to a folding day. This month, Lisa Frazier had everything ship shape with her crew. Be sure if you bring in items for Community Closet, that they are items you would still use and make sure they are clean. Most needed would be additional children s gently used clothes and tops for women. A few suits for men would work also. Volunteers helping were David Frazier, Judy Jones, Milt Lyles, Kim Parra, Cathy Harden, Phyllis Veldman and Araceli Nunez. We served 173 children and about 25 siblings. Lots of smiles, lots of hugs, lots of visiting with each other too. The Health Assistants of Pomona Unified visited on October 20. Great meeting, positive comments and a tour of Operation School Bell created an interest in the service we provide. We have health assistants that want to come donate their time, so a great secondary benefit. Our next delivery is Act of Giving which will be held on Wednesday, December 14, Please remember, we need extra help in preparation. We should have names by our November meeting which will give you 5+ weeks for purchases. We do wrap these gifts. More details will be given when you select a family. This is indeed an added expense to personal budgets. But for those of you who can take a family and shop please do. If you are unable to do the shopping a donation would be great. Please specify that it is for Act of Giving. Thanks in advance. ~Stephanie Roberts and David Frazier a total of 82 days with 351 new patients and providing 845 treatments. An informal request was made from school nurses and health services to provide dental treatments to the adults in the families of the children that receive our services. An additional request has been made by health services to provide dental treatment for pregnant mothers. The Philanthropic Advisory Board recommends that the Board research the liability of treating adults and expectant mothers, discerning its impact upon fundraising, and incorporate the cost of treating adults in the Dental Center budget. Operation School Bell received $4,604 from City of Pomona CDBG grant to help with the purchasing of pants. The Southern California Edison $5,000 grant was used to purchase jackets and sweaters. For the fiscal year , 1,227 children were provided clothing and books in six deliveries. Eighty sets of clothing were provided to Pomona Preservation and Family Support Center for summer distribution. Date of Act of Giving distribution is December 14, The Dental Center community outreach is going very well, kudos to Carole and Jane. Flyers and posters have been printed and distributed to the school nurses, health aides, and health services. Pomona school nurses and health aides are hosting several of their health services meetings at the Chapter House. Pomona Unified School District has a total of 16 school nurses and 39 health aides. Eighty- five percent of the children in Pomona Unified receive free or reduced lunch. The Philanthropic Advisory Board recommends that $5,000 be added to the Dental Center budget on the line item Dental Equipment and Repair to address replacement of worn and broken dental equipment. ~ Rene PHILANTHROPIC The Philanthropic Projects Advisory meeting was held October 19 th at the Chapter House. Here are the topics that were discussed: The Dental Center days of operation are Tuesday and Wednesday. From June 1, 2015 thru May 31, 2016 the Dental Center was open (continued, next column) November Birthdays 21 st Karen Procsal Page 3

5 . Create A Smile Gala Update We Did It!!!!!! Our first Annual Gala is one month behind us but still fresh in our minds. By all accounts, our guests had a wonderful experience and "will return with a friend." The venue at Padua Hills Theatre was exquisite. Our entertainment (strolling magician, patio music and concert) provided by the CA Jazz Arts Society, was superb. Fine wines, beverages and the hors d'oeuvres were tasty and the wine draw game Cathy Harden and Jessica Ortega hosted was great fun. We definitely will need to rethink a few things in order to grow bigger and better. However, for a first effort, we are happily in the black with a current surplus of $11,402. Thank You to those who dedicated time and energy to planning, setting up and breaking down. You were the backbone to our success. Thank You to those who generously donated way beyond the voted financial obligation. The quality of the opportunity baskets was phenomenal!!! Thank You to everyone for supporting this effort in order for ALPV to serve more children in our communities. All suggestions and ideas and comments are welcome. Needing to hit the road running preparing for the Tea, we may not schedule a Wrap-Up meeting for the Gala. So, me at sagoodrn@aol.com. ~Sharon Goodrich Page 5
