I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas spent with family and friends. Although we haven t had a meeting since November, Assistance League of Pomona Valley has been very busy this holiday season. Our annual Christmas party was a very joyous and fun evening hosted by Carol and Dwight Holmes. A merry time was had by all as we dined on delicious food and drink and ended the evening with a lively gift exchange. A huge thank you once again to our gracious hosts and to all those who attended. Act of Giving was on Friday December 11 th with 27 families coming in to shop Operation School Bell and receive their family gifts. It was a very cold day and we had a line by 9:30 a.m. Everyone waited patiently for their turn and all were extremely grateful for the generosity shown to them and their families. A lot of these families do not have cars so it was really heartwarming to see the ones who did offer their assistance and take them home. We had a dedicated group of Assistance League Elves working that day with Executive Elf Stephanie keeping order and answering all questions thrown her way. It was a very good day. Our next meeting will be at chapter on January 5 th at 9:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The evening meeting will be a little less formal but thought it would be a good way to keep everyone informed and on the same page. Please keep in mind that there will be 2 separate cooking committees so it is extremely important to RSVP yes or no (morning, night or both) to Kathee Elliott. We have quite a bit on our agenda with National s upcoming visit, Golf tournament and Padua Hills to discuss. Look forward to seeing all of you in the New Year! ~ Cathy Harden Page 1

2 MEMBERSHIP The Volunteer Hours Worksheet needs to be turned in to me at the January meeting. We need an accurate accounting of hours spent on fundraising particularly at this time so please count and report the many hours that you have spent in raising funds for our many important philanthropies. These hours are important in both grant and report writing and are needed by Resource Development in January. Please bring the worksheet to the meeting or me the hours if you will not be attending the meeting. There will be both a 9:30 am meeting and 6:00 pm so bring the information to either. Thanks in advance! Please remember to me regarding lunch and dinner this month. Since we will have food at both times, it is especially important to have a head count. ~Kathee Elliott Katheeelliott@aol.com PUBLIC RELATIONS In December I was honored to attend the Auxiliary Holiday Luncheon for Kathy Jarvis our Chapter Liaison. Upon entering Nancy Laird's home you were immediately put in the festive mode with her beautiful decorations. The food was delicious and of course I love sharing news of Active Chapter. A special treat was the attendance of Nancy Casey. Do you know Nancy has been a member of Assistance League since 1945? She and Jeanne Master shared stories of modeling at Assistance League Garden Parties. We had a wonderful time. Please see the pictures below. As most of you know, I am in Florida until March. If you have anything you would like posted on Facebook, just me. I wish you all a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous New Year. ~Carol Holmes HEADQUARTERS We are doing a cleanup around League on Jan 4 th, the day before the morning and evening meetings. There are lots of weeds, leaves to sweep, bushes to trim and all help will be appreciated. We will start at 9 am and we, as usual, will treat you to lunch at Mexico Lindo afterwards. ~Nitzi and Keith Barker DENTAL CENTER The Dental Center was open for 6 days in December. They served 34 patients with 3 being new patients for a total of 82 treatments. The Dental Center will reopen on Jan 5 th. ~ Jane Hubbard AUXILIARY Remember there is no meeting in January. The next meeting will be February 3 rd, hosted by Susan Brinkama. Details to follow. STRATEGIC PLANNING Included in this Newsletter is a copy of the proposed Strategic Plan approved by AL Pomona Valley Board of Directors on November 19, Please review the Mission, Vision, Values, Goals and Strategies prior to our next meeting on January 5, Print and bring a copy for discussion purposes. Assistance League of Pomona Valley will support our communities through philanthropic programs that build selfesteem and create one smile at a time for children and their families. Committing to the children and families we serve Appreciating the energy, experience and contributions of all members Demonstrating respect, kindness and compassion toward others Enhancing partnerships with school districts and Chambers of Commerce Increasing revenue by 10% annually Expanding the quality and number of items for Operation School Bell Increasing the number of new clients served in the Dental Center by 10% annually Increasing the number of community volunteers by 10% annually GOALS and STRATEGIES Increasing revenue by 10% annually Increase surplus of current fundraisers Add new fundraisers Hire/Groom grant writer Expand the quality and number of items for Operation School Bell Identify and write grants to support Operation School Bell growth Increase average cost per child from $13 to $25 Focus efforts on adding jackets and pants for each client Increase the number of client s served by the Dental Center by 10% annually Promote Dental Center in local communities Improve communications with Pomona, Claremont and Bonita school districts Expand services to include all family members Increase outside Community Volunteers by 10% annually Offer Community Service hours to local schools Contact neighborhood residents and parents Connect with churches and other nonprofits

4 TEACUPS NEEDED! We are asking everyone to search your Goodwill, Salvation Army and or Neighborhood Thrift stores to purchase tea cups. We need to increase our own inventory so we don't have to borrow. If you have some that you no longer want and wish to donate to the cause; that would be wonderful. We are also looking for the glass tea plates and cups that we serve sandwiches and scones on. If you want to be reimbursed, keep your receipts and turn them in to Jessica and if not, they make a great tax deduction for Some thrift stores will be willing to keep your name and phone number and call you if what you are looking for comes in. OPERATION SCHOOL BELL Act of Giving December 11, 2015 As we finish up our own holiday events and hold dear our gatherings with family and friends, it s time to reflect on what else we do as members of Assistance League of Pomona Valley. Our delivery was a first in that everyone on the list was taken care of that day. Our busy bees which included Cathy Harden, Cathy Rockwell, René Sippel, Kim Parra and David Frazier were actively finding clothing for kids and of course their presents. All families came except one which we made arrangements for; David Frazier took gifts to them that afternoon. Dwight and Carol Holmes came by to snap some pictures as did Roger. As usual, many people provided gifts above and beyond. Our members were wonderful in making sure the items were available for our families. Some had orders come in late but they delivered those items to the homes of our clients. Mt. Calvary once again out did themselves by abundantly gifting the family chosen for them. Northkirk Presbyterian Church in Alta Loma once again provided grocery funding for many families. Sally Boyd celebrated with friends and they donated Payless Shoes Certificates. Other members gave donations to help purchase grocery gift cards too. Somehow it always works out. Our members are generous giving to others (CONTINUED, NEXT COLUMN) before they provide for themselves. They understand how important this day is. This year we had a list of 27 families. As Christmas got closer through various methods we were asked to help an additional four families bringing our family total to 31. The grand total was 170 people which included 27 mothers, 18 fathers, 2 grandpas, 5 grandmas and 118 children. Our hearts were captured not just by the hugs but the warm, moist tears that appeared in the moms and dads eyes. Sometimes one would escape and trickle down their face and we knew we had made a difference. This is the most glorious gift of all, to feel this Act of Giving from the bottom of our hearts as we meld with our wonderful families that just need someone to show them we care. Once again, thank you members and friends for proving that love is in the Act of Giving. ~ Stephanie and Sally RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT We had a very productive Festive Fall Tea wrap up meeting and came away with some constructive ideas and suggestions to make next year's tea even better. The Board feels strongly that our guests have been very clear that they expect a Fall 2016 tea. In order to be prepared we will need more tea cups and saucers, tea pots, glass plates and cups and sets of stainless flatware to accommodate what is sure to be an even larger crowd. Since our Padua Hills evening event is on Thursday, September 29, 2016, we are looking at November dates for our tea--either Sunday, November 6, 2016 or Sunday, November 13, Please look at your calendar and come to the January regular meeting prepared to choose a date and commit your help to create another successful Fall Tea. The Padua Hills event is an exciting blank palette available to us to create a truly exciting and memorable evening which will earn needed funds for our organization. We know we have the beautiful venue and great music. We still need to put our heads together to plan the details for a "Wow"- (CONTINUED, NEXT COLUMN) Page 4

5 worthy evening. Please bring your ideas to a planning meeting at the Chapter House on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Some of our members will be working and unable to attend a daytime meeting----i invite anyone unable to attend to please share your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions with me via phone call or so that I can include your input in this kick-off meeting. Plans for our annual golf tournament are already well underway!! Our focus this year is in obtaining a wealth of underwriters. Please consider whom you might know who would appreciate having their business advertised during our golf tournament by underwriting a portion of the day. It's truly a Win-Win!! To get this party started, we extend an invitation (or a very friendly challenge) to our Auxiliary, Associate and Life Members. Any one of you who sign an underwriter for the golf tournament will be entered into a drawing to win a $100 Macy's gift card. Our underwriting opportunities will be distributed in February---start thinking NOW about who you might contact!!! Won't Michelle be proud of us if she receives great stuff in January?!?! Remember---THINK GOLF!!!!!!!!!!! We are working on "Open Your Heart" (replacing "Helping Hands") direct mail solicitation invitations and hope to have them ready for Board approval at the December Board meeting. Please bring any new names and addresses to the January meeting so Lisa can include them in our mailing list.
