Time for football (GO VOLS!), chili simmering on the stove, pumpkin bread in the oven, and time spent catching up with friends and family. Congratulations to each of you on successful summer programs!! The hard work, long hours, and time spent providing exceptional services to our communities, does not go unnoticed. I hope that everyone who attended the Annual Business Meeting was able to take away tips, tricks, confidence, and advice from Tamara Letourneau s, City of Costa Mesa s Assistant City Manager s, Work-Life Balance presentation. Truly invaluable information she shared with everyone. Thank to Ashley Ocasio for planning a great event, you can never go wrong with yummy barbeque from Newport Rib Company. I want to extend a big thank you to Valerie Passarella for preparing and presenting the Budget. Thank you to everyone who attended our Bosses Day event on Thursday, October 12 th at Bower s Museum. I learned so much from the all of the exhibits and I hope you all did as well. Thank you to Shayna Gutierrez and her committee for putting together an excellent event at a unique venue. Mark your calendars for the WILS and MILS Fall Forum on Tuesday, November 14 at the Norman P. Murray Community Center. 3 national news Janet Cates - Helen I. Pontius National Award Recipient years ago Helen I. Pontius and the founders of Women In Leisure Services (Chi Kappa Rho) had a vision, an idea to bring professional women together in the field of Recreation. Alpha was the first chapter formed in 1936 serving the Los Angeles area. Gamma was formed in 1959, Delta in 1967, Zeta in 1970 and Chi in WILS has a long history and grand tradition. Today we are here to honor one terrific lady! Janet began her parks & recreation career in She began her career prior to completing of her BFA in Fine Arts from Cal State Fullerton in Through these 45 years she worked and volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club of Fullerton, City of La Habra, City of La Palma and the City of Newport Beach. She was a dynamo. She spoke at numerous conferences, district events and WILS programs. Her topics included mentorship, to employee motivation, programming by outcomes and more. She has written many articles and staff training manuals such as Fit n Fun, articles for state CPRS magazine and even on the topic of Teen Alcohol Abuse. In her spare time she volunteered for not just the Girl Scouts as a Unit Manager but for the Boy Scouts too!! She has served in numerous capacities within the WILS Gamma Chapter. She has served on many event committees and as a mentor to the up & coming professionals in the field. She has served in various capacities of CPRS on the District and State level. She served on the National WILS Board too. Too many committees and board positions to list here! Prior to this award, Janet has received many awards to recognize her as an outstanding professional, two special ones were the Mary K. Peterson Award and the Helen Green Memorial Award, given by Gamma. Gamma member, Cindy Robinson, Assistant to the City Manager, from La Palma Community Services Dept. stated I could go on & on about Janet s outstanding professionalism, her creativity with new ideas that benefit everyone around her, her leadership by example, and her continuing community participation, but I truly cherish her friendship above all else..i have respect for her personally and professionally and she is truly a forever friend. 4 gamma events Annual Business Meeting Recap Bosses Day Recap Thank you to everyone who attended the Annual Business Meeting on Thursday, August 17 at Newport Rib Company in Costa Mesa. The 33 Gamma members and sponsors in attendance enjoyed a sandwich and salad buffet. The event started off with a presentation from the City of Costa Mesa s Assistant City Manager, Tamara Letourneau, on Work-Life Balance. The Gamma Board was introduced, the Gamma budget was approved, and new members were introduced and welcomed. Thank you to all the ladies that participated in the 50/50! Money raised from the 50/50 will be added to the Gamma Scholarship Fund. The annual Bosses Day event was held on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. WILS members and their bosses began with a docent-lead tour of the museum followed by lunch at the Tangata Restaurant and yummy dessert sponsored by Classics Flowers and Confections. Everyone had a great time.

9 gamma gals Marianna Pena, Recreation Coordinator City of Costa Mesa What made you decide to go into the field of Recreation or Leisure Services? In 2006, I got a job at city hall working at the Parks & Community Services Department front counter. This was my first time working in the public sector and I enjoyed the family oriented environment and the service the department provided for the community. I loved it so much I have been in the recreation field ever since! If you could have any superpower, what would it be? If I could have a superpower it would be to read minds so I could help people who may have trouble communicating their needs/feelings. What is your hidden talent? My hidden talent is that I am flexible and often sit with one foot under my leg. What is one word that describes you? I m looking forward to networking and getting to know other. What are you looking forward to as a new WILS member? Networking and learning from other WILS members and contribute my knowledge and skills to the organization. Janet Zuazo, Recreation Leader City of Costa Mesa What made you decide to go into the field of Recreation or Leisure Services? As a kid I ve always wanted to work in a field of Recreation. I ve always thought that being in this field is a healthy living in a fun environment. I love that it has a range of options whether it be indoor or outdoor and interacting with people. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To be able to control time. What is your hidden talent? Photography What is one word that describes you? Enthusiastic What are you looking forward to as a new WILS member? I look forward to meeting successful women and being able to learn from them to help further my career.

10 gamma gals Susan Peebles, Recreation Leader City of Lakewood What made you decide to go into the field of Recreation or Leisure Services? I have always been involved in sports and have had a passion for the outdoors since I was a child. Recreation and Leisure Services encompasses both. They promote a sense of community and teamwork. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Shapeshifting. Specifically, the ability to transform into any animal on earth. Imagine seeing things from every species perspective. Running 60+ miles per hour as a Cheetah, migrating as a Whale off the coast of Hawaii, roaming the Rocky Mountains as a Grizzly Bear. One word would sum up that experience, incredible. What is your hidden talent? I can juggle (still in the beginning stages, but it s a work in progress!). What is one word that describes you? Passionate What are you looking forward to as a new WILS member? Mentorship and professional development. Being surrounded by women who are successful in their careers and who want the same thing for you is beyond special. Having others challenge you and guide you is something that I feel is incredibly important to have throughout one s career. I can not wait to meet other members and immerse myself in this organization and to carry out this wonderful organizations mission and vision. Gina Bonilla, Recreation Services Coordinator City of Riverside What made you decide to go into the field of Recreation or Leisure Services? The fact that I love working with people of all ages and backgrounds and I love sports and event planning. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Teleportation.
