2 Message from the President and the and CEO the CEO Everyone knows that change is hard, but at CMHA York Region Branch we know that change is an opportunity for growth, new ideas and improvement. Certainly, last year, 2011/2012, we embraced the opportunity to move forward. At the foundation of all our services is a sincere belief that our client, family and community needs come first. To that end, we gladly came into compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians Disability Act and adopted the Ontario Common Assessment of Need standardized assessment tool. Both of these initiatives promise increased dignity, respect and accessibility. Staff embraced the challenge to increase service levels and offer new initiatives needed by our clients. One such example is education in financial literacy to promote increased independence. President Stephen Brooks As York Region and South Simcoe grow so too must we and this year we welcomed a new nurse and additional case manager for our Early Psychosis Intervention Team. The Employment Support Services team expanded to include an additional Employment Specialist. Also, Ontario Telemedicine Network RN and RPN Positions were added to increase clinical access to specialists in York and South Simcoe. There was also a time to say goodbye as former CEO Colleen Zakoor moved on from her time with us after eleven years of service. Under her leadership, this agency successfully amalgamated with Mental Health Services of York Region, led a successful accreditation process and added numerous new programs such as two ACT Teams, an Early Psychosis Intervention Program and expanded the of Community Mental Health Programs. We thank her for her service and wish her all the best in future endeavours. CEO Rebecca Shields During the transition to a new CEO, the Senior Management team stepped in to help guide the agency. Thank you to Anita, Carmen, Carol, Karen and Neil for the extra effort during that time. Thank you also to all our wonderful team members and volunteers whose dedication makes the difference every day. We also want to acknowledge Terry Bisset who joined CMHA YR temporarily as our interim CEO and helped with our Executive search. Finally, we want to welcome Rebecca Shields to the team. She joins us as the former Executive Director of the CMHA Vancouver Burnaby Branch. Moving forward, Rebecca plans on working with all our stakeholders to continue our commitment to improve and enhance service delivery, focus on increased sustainability and broaden the reach of our message of Mental Health for All. 3 Community Impact Impact Help Overcome Psychosis Early (H.O.P.E) is our early psychosis intervention program and is offered throughout York Region and South Simcoe. The H.O.P.E team offers specialized services for individuals aged who are experiencing psychosis for the first time. CMHA and the LIHN are committed to this model of care because recovery focussed early intervention offers the best chance for long term positive health and improved quality of life. Last year the LIHN increased its investment of the program and the results are fantastic: within four months the wait time for service had been reduced dramatically and the number of clients engaged in the program increased from 85 to 105. Family members say: The boost in my son s confidence and his feelings of a light ahead has been the best thing we ve seen in the way of improvement. The program is essential to provide outreach, support and hope when the world seems confused and bewildering. In August a group of 60 clients (from our Case Management, Assertive Community Treatment Team, H.O.P.E and Court Programs) went on a Camping Trip to Cypress Provincial Park in Tobermory. This opportunity is grounded in rehabilitation principles because it offers our clients a chance to build social networks, learn and practice new skills and increases self-esteem. Certainly, the beauty of the region lifts their spirits from their daily struggles and inspires hope, a core component of recovery. Thank you to Novartis and H.O.P.E families for your generous support of this trip. The Speakers Bureau brings together individuals with lived experience who are passionate about educating and reducing the stigma associated with mental illness. The Speaker s Bureau had a busy year reaching over 700 people through numerous community presentations, many in partnership with the United Way of York Region fall campaign. Our speakers gave powerful and insightful presentations by sharing their stories of recovery from mental illness that tell of resilience, hope, compassion and courage. By sharing their personal stories our speakers: Increase awareness about mental illness Instill a sense of hope for recovery Reduce the stigma associated with mental illness Help individuals and families living with mental illness feel less alone Please consider having a presentation from our Speakers Bureau. We are always interested in new opportunities. The program has allowed my son to live on his own which has helped the entire family. (client)
4 Highlights of Our of Strategic Our Strategic Plan Plan was the second year of our three-year Balanced Scorecard, continuing with the themes of Quality Mental Health Outcomes; Collaboration, Partnerships and Engagement; and, Organizational Health. With a focus on client service, our key strategic objectives are to: Improve access to quality services, Increase support for complex needs, Improve awareness, Focus on client safety, and Increase client & stakeholder involvement. In order to do that, we... Developed a new Tobacco Management Program in partnership with Cancer Care Ontario, York Support Services Network (YSSN), Markham Stouffville Hospital, and York Region Public Health. 48 staff at CMHA and YSSN were trained to better support clients wanting to reduce their tobacco use, and two client group cycles were completed. 100% of participants reduced their tobacco use! One client identified that they had quit for 8 weeks once before, but having the replacement products and the peer support this time was much more helpful. Another proudly stated, I am now a non-smoker, one hour at a time! My determination is strong. I m ready to fight now knowing each moment that passes will be better and better. Consolidated two of our locations in Central York Region to develop a hub of services in our newly renovated space in Aurora. This hub addresses safety issues identified in our 2011 Safety Audit, provides expanded client space to deliver more social recreation and psychotherapy groups to clients, and creates a greater opportunity for knowledge exchange and client support across disciplines and programs. Implemented the Ontario Client Assessment of Need. This standardized client assessment tool provides clients with the opportunity to do a self-assessment prior to meeting with staff and to guide the direction of services to assist with their recovery. OCAN gives people living with mental health problems and illnesses an effective way to voice their needs and preferences, and enables them to play a more active role in developing their individual care plans. Clients are reporting that they feel good about how OCAN provides a clear context for them to speak with staff about all areas of their life and that it is helpful setting priority areas of need.
