5 Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends of Janus, It s hard to imagine, but Janus was established in 1972 as one of the first seven programs in the country to provide residential treatment for teens with drug problems. We now have over 40 programs created to respond to unmet community needs for teens and young adults including our most recent project, Rivera House, which provides transitional living support for LGBTQIA youth returning to the community from a closed custody Oregon Youth Authority institution the first program like this in the entire country. At a recent community presentation, I described Janus by the Numbers: 20 locations in Oregon and SW Washington, 250 teen moms supported, 90 runaway or homeless youth sheltered every night, and 6,000 children, youth and young adults served annually. But it is the unseen things that happen every day that shine the light of hope: $2 million in lifetime community savings for every homeless youth we help achieve housing stability that prevents adult homelessness and we are housing over 60 young adults (often with families) every night and have assisted over 1,000 youth into safe, stable housing in the last 5 years. The true value of what we do is priceless but it could not happen without the support we receive from our community including you and your ongoing belief that every youth deserves the opportunity to succeed. Our founding purpose is to open doors for youth and to let them know that once a Janus kid, always a Janus kid, and with your help we will keep our doors open for every youth who needs us. 1 1

6 2018 Snapshot 703 youth stayed in our Portland and Vancouver shelters 538 youth living in our residential programs, transitional or independent housing programs 391 teen-parent households and 471 kids received support with housing, domestic violence prevention and child development In 2018 our programs served thousands of at-risk youth and their families 281 Kids and adults living below the poverty line grew 3,733 pounds of produce in our community gardens 703 youth and families called our 24 Hour Phone Support line 9,070 contacts with homeless youth from our Portland/WA street outreach workers who distributed 78,587 hygiene and first-aid supplies 2

7 2018 Highlights RIVERA HOUSE Rivera House celebrated its oneyear anniversary since opening its doors to LGBTQIA youth transitioning to independence from the custody of Oregon Youth Authority. Working with highly trained staff, youth receive support, connection to appropriate services and guidance in a safe, nurturing environment. This is the first program of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. SCHOLARSHIPS The Scholarships for Success program awarded 9 scholarships in Since 2001 when the program began, these scholarships have helped fill in the gaps for students who are struggling to finance their education without financial support from their families. The 9 recipients used their scholarships to help pay for tuition, books, rent and tools for an apprenticeship program. The program funds are now managed by The Oregon Community Foundation. INSIGHTS Insights celebrated their 10-year anniversary with Janus in Because the program has been around since 1979, many youth learn about Insights from friends, school, community partners, shelters and the Homeless Youth Continuum. Insights staff were busy in 2018, completing 4,533 home visits, 414 child development screenings and helping 135 families with 196 kids receive housing assistance. HOPE PARTNERSHIP The program continued its longstanding partnership with Resolutions NW for the Restorative Justice program, Portland State University to support PSU s Inside/ Out Metamorphosis classes and Lewis and Clark School of Law for Legal Studies workshop. The program hosted weekly Chess Club and quarterly chess tournaments with Chess for Success and offered a variety of community volunteerled workshops. 3 3

8 Youth Story Never give up, is the motto Rose carried with her during her years as a homeless youth in Vancouver, WA. After over five years of homelessness, struggling with addiction and ending up in jail repeatedly, Rose turned a new leaf on life. At 24, she is a supervisor at Papa Murphy s, has a one-bedroom apartment, spends time with her six-year old son and is completely clean. Having housing stability gives me a chance to be a mom. 4 Her homelessness started at age 18 when she left home because of a falling out with a family member over her drug use and relapse. While Rose was able to get support, hoping to change the course of her life, she was not ready to quit. Eventually, Rose got into a program at Open House Ministries in Vancouver where she received rent-free housing for a year. When that ended, she was back on the street, trying to survive but relapsed again and sent to jail. In lieu of extended jail time, Rose enrolled in a Drug Court program that offered treatment and recovery support services. This was a turning point for her. I realized I couldn t help myself alone, it didn t work. While in the program, the Vancouver Housing Authority placed Rose with a caseworker at Janus who tirelessly worked with her to find housing. Says Rose, It took a year to find stable housing and it was an emotional rollercoaster ride. I hit bottom, relapsed and was back in jail. Fortunately, my caseworker never gave up on me and was always kind and reassuring, which helped me get through that tough time. Finally, Rose and her Janus caseworker found her an apartment where she has been happily living. A month before I moved into my home, I sobered up. Having my own space and a place to go home every night where I can shower and store my own things I never had that, says Rose. One of the most important outcomes of having her own home, in addition to being clean and employed, is that Rose was able to have her son back within two months of moving into her home. Says Rose, having housing stability gives me a chance to be a mom.
