2 From the President & Executive Director Dear Friends, As the New Year approaches rapidly, we can reflect on 2016 with pride. Through your donations, volunteerism, and advocacy we continue to further the vision of the Arvada Community Food Bank We will empower our community by providing the tools to lift people from poverty. We wouldn t be successful without you! Thank you all! The Arvada Community Food Bank Foundation continues to grow and thrive. This year, we were presented with a $60,000 check that will fund the Bridges to Opportunity program for a year. In addition, the Rolling Hills Foundation has named us their charity partner and beneficiary for their 2018 Golf Classic and Gala. Meanwhile, the Arvada Community Food Bank Foundation will continue with their incredibly successful golf tournament again in August of Our Top Hats & Ball Caps event continues to evolve. Last year s theme of "A Night at the Races" saw lots of BIG hats and Kentucky Derby-like attire. All those who attended had a great time while supporting the Food Bank. Our work to gather meaningful data to effectively and efficiently manage our resources continues to move forward. Transition is never easy, yet our dedicated staff and team of volunteers amazes us every day as we strive to help all of our clients with a cheery disposition. WOW! Next year we will be celebrating our 35th Anniversary. Our friendships and partnerships have grown every year. This has allowed us to continue to serve our community in a successful and meaningful manner. Together we can accomplish anything and are always looking for ways to improve. We cannot thank each and every one of your people. The kindness that is shown is above anything we could have ever hoped for. Thank You for being there. As a victim of domestic violence there are days that I still tread water to keep my head up and not give up. I sincerely thank you for all the amazing help you offer those who come to you. The kids and I have had a tough go the past 3 years and I really appreciate the folks there who give so freely of themselves and their time to make our lives a little better and less stressful. Thank you. Have worked all my life but got laid off after 12 years at my former employer. It was very difficult for me at my age to find another position and very depressing when the bills kept coming in but not much to pay them with. Thank you for being there at one of the most difficult times in my life and not making me feel like the loser I felt like I was. Slowly turning things around and wanted to let you know how much it was appreciated! Source: 2016 Client Survey I thank and appreciate the Arvada Food Bank for helping me, a 82 year old woman, and her sister who takes care of 4 others in our home, we try not to take advantage of this help by purposely not coming in every month which in our case is very, very hard to do! 7 Providing for Our Community Meet Ed Ed is one of our regular characters. We all know him well. He even shares fly-fishing flies he s tied with staff. It s good workmanship. Ed is a former Navy man who participated in the blockade of Cuba during the missile crisis in October of While no shots were fired from the big guns on deck during the quarantine, Ed s hearing was severely damaged by the noise form the deck canons during his years in the service. Ed drove for RTD for many years. When he developed sleep apnea and could no longer drive, he was forced to leave his job. At the same time he was put on oxygen and began retaining water. His health deteriorated rapidly. Two or three times a year he is hospitalized to remove fluid form his lungs and the water retention which also effects his feet and legs creates difficulty for him to stand for long periods or walk. Due to his health problems and age, Ed is forced to live on less than $17,000 from SSI Disability, and Medicare. Making ends meet can be tough every month. Still, Ed is involved in his community and has a big heart for kids. He has great pride in his service as a volunteer for the children s fishing tournament at the Arvada Reservoir each spring and in soliciting prizes for the children from local merchants. Ed enjoys his visits with us and says that the food he receives is great quality and the Client Choice shopping area has great space to move around in compared to other food banks. We have many friends like Ed who we enjoy visiting with each time they drop by for assistance. It makes a big difference for all of us to get to know each other and create a sense of community.
