2 Page 2 JIAA Newsletter MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Bonnie Householder We are so incredibly delighted to see all of our winter members return to Jekyll Island this year! You make a huge difference in our lives and we are so happy you are back. Welcome home! Hope you had an opportunity to hear Tricia Bowman, our own storyteller, present her 50 th Anniversary program in January at Mistletoe Cottage. This will be followed by our next 50 th Anniversary program February 14, also at Mistletoe, entitled A Valentine from Athos Menaboni. This program will provide a sneak peek into our Menaboni exhibit in March at Goodyear space for this program will again be limited. Tickets are available at Goodyear for $2 on a limited basis so we don t overwhelm the house, per the Fire Marshall s requirements. And refreshments will be at Goodyear immediately following the program. At the Jekyll Island Arts Association Annual Meeting and concert in January, one person resigned from the Board for the remaining two years of her term. Cathy Dillon will be taking over the remaining two years on this term. Cathy is a member of our Weaving Guild, Membership Chair for the Friends of Historic Jekyll Island, will soon be a Goodyear Front Desk Volunteer and Cathy and her husband, Pete, are members of the Lions Club. If you have given blood lately, they have volunteered there as Lions. Welcome to the Board of Directors, Cathy! We are still looking for volunteers for a litany of options this year. On our website homepage is a link to the Volunteer Sign Up portal on the list on the left side of the home page. Please register and check back periodically to sign up for upcoming events or for repeat opportunities. Jekyll Island Arts Association is an all volunteer non-profit organization, and we need your help! If you take classes, enter items in the shop or the Festival, or anything else that is part of your membership, we d appreciate your help for a couple of hours a month to help our operations function smoothly. Elsewhere in the Newsletter is a Help Wanted section where we are listing some opportunities for you to learn more about the inner workings of the Arts Association and the maintenance of Goodyear Cottage. Please read through those opportunities and see if there are any about which you would like more information. How can you help? Some of you have asked about dates of our events that will be happening over the course of the coming months. Elsewhere in this newsletter is a Save the Date list so you can mark them on your calendars and will not miss a beat. Additional information on every event will be distributed prior to the date we truly look forward to seeing you at our 50 th Anniversary events Bonnie MEMBERSHIP NEWS Joan Samuelson Your JIAA membership dues for the 2017/2018 calendar year will be due starting April 1st. As you renew, either on the Website or by paper, please take the time to insure that your address, phone number and are correct. Correct information ensures that we stay in contact with all members but it is especially important for members who sell goods in the shop; the address information in the database is what is used when mailing checks for items that have sold. 4 Page 4 JIAA Newsletter Merry Artist Wrap-Up Thanks to the hard work of numerous volunteers, the second Merry Artists show was a rousing success. Kudos especially go to co-chairs Mark See and Sonia Peterson, and also to Deb Patterson, without whose organizational skills the show would not go on. Sales were equal to last year and visitors again enjoyed the opening reception featuring the Jekyll singers which was held on the night of the tree lighting in the historic district. The show committee has met to do some find tuning for next year. While the set-up of the show ran very smoothly, numerous artists did not pick up their work at the scheduled time for takedown. This makes it very difficult to prepare the gallery and shop area for the set-up of the next show and means transporting work to the third floor by those who should not need to do this. At this point 100 items still remain to be collected. As a result, the Board has determined that in the future, the Goodyear Shop will be cleared of ALL items following the Merry Artists show in December, and the Festival Shop will be cleared of ALL items following the Arts Festival in March. Each artist or an appointee MUST pick up items during the designated hours, which will be announced in advance. Items left beyond that time period will become the property of the JIAA and will be donated to various JI organizations for their fundraising efforts. Those who make it possible for you to show your work will greatly appreciate your cooperation and consideration in the future. The Needlework Group is alive and well! We miss Alice Jarrett very much! She is so knowledgeable about our art and graciously provided us with Tea and Crumpets. We have a regular group of talented knitters and crocheters who also have other needlework talents and we invite you to join us on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. upstairs on the second floor. Note: It is not really good for handicap use. Carol Cover, Carol Nolan, Ame Ivanov and I are the regular attendees and leaders of the group. Please let us know if you have any questions or perhaps need a ride. Bring your mending or any other needlework project. Make something to sell in the store or the Art Festival or just drop by to chat we may or may not have the tea pot on! Hope to see you soon. 5 February 2017 Page 5 Jekyll Island Arts Festival March 10, 11, and 12, 2017 The 2017 Arts Festival is coming quickly! Many volunteers are already hard at work organizing various parts of the festival that ultimately come together to make it a wonderful event for our members as well as for visitors to Jekyll Island. On February 1 st, the 2017 entry requirements for the juried show and the link to the new volunteer sign-up website will be available on the jekyllartsassociation.org website and at Goodyear Cottage during regular open hours. We will also send it to members by . One exciting change this year is that there are no size restrictions on paintings, drawings, and photographs. Sculpture and other 3D work must be able to be carried by one person. It takes close to 300 volunteers giving two hours of time to make the festival a success. Many give much more than two hours because it is fun to be a part of the activities. Please note that members entering work in the juried show are required to volunteer at least two hours. If you are unable to volunteer, you may have a designated stand-in to fulfill your responsibility to volunteer. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities before, during, and after the festival that allow volunteers to sit during the 2-hour shift. There are others that require walking or standing for two hours. If you are entering artwork and will not be able to attend the festival, check out the volunteer opportunities on Registration day Tuesday. We have need for registration workers and runners (you really won t have to run.) Runners carry registered artwork into the Gallery to be displayed. It s a walking job. Because of the 50 th Anniversary Menaboni exhibit that will be set up following the festival, only first, second, and third place winners will remain on display in March. All other art must be picked up after 4pm and until 6pm on Sunday March 12, or Monday, March 13 between 9am and noon. If you are unable to pick up your work, please make arrangements for a friend to do so. We do not have storage space or people to move artwork that is left. All work not picked up by then will be donated to one of the organizations on Jekyll Island for fund raising purposes. Artwork check-out also provides volunteer opportunities for people who prefer a sitting job and can t volunteer during the festival. Last year we introduced on-line entry for the juried show. The artists who took advantage of the entry system raved about how easy entry day was because of having all of their registration materials printed and waiting for them to pick up. No forms or cards to write, just make sure the information we provide is attached to the correct items and you are done! If you didn t register on-line last year, give it a try this year and see how much time it saves! As members you are invited to SNEAK PEEK on March 9th from 4-6pm. The contest this year is VINTAGE ARTSY and prizes will be awarded at 6pm. Get creative and come in a vintage costume to enter!" We are looking forward to the best festival ever! See you in March.

6 Page 6 JIAA Newsletter CALLING ALL BAKERS! The festival bake sale tent will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We will welcome your baked goods everyday. Let Deb Patterson know if and what day you can bring your goodies and/or if you can work an hour or two in the tent. Call me at: if no answer, just leave a message. Or dljpatterson2000@yahoo.com Thank you all. Volunteers Needed For Annual Arts Festival Our annual festival is just around the corner and we will need many volunteers. Last year we had 297 volunteers, with many doing multiple shifts during the festival and many hands helping with setup and take down before and afterwards. This year we have a new program to help you know what volunteer opportunities are available, and to sign up for them. The program will also send you reminder notices and, if you wish, an entry to your electronic calendar. The festival volunteer pages will be live on February 1st. To sign up, go to the JIAA Volunteer Sign-Up page at: In the upper right hand corner, pull down the menu Show More Sign Ups (see below). The activities are arranged in 2 sections: pre and post festival activities; and festival activities. Don t forget to use the arrow on the right hand side to scroll for more activities. To sign up, select an activity and time-slot, then at the bottom of the page, select Submit and Sign Up. You will be asked to enter your name and address. If you choose to become a registered member of the site, then you will never need to re-enter this information on future sign-ups. Visit us on Facebook at Jekyll Island Arts Association

7 February 2017 Page 7 All of us, as members of the association, are stewards of Goodyear Cottage and currently the grand old structure (110 years and counting) has a few projects that need attention. These projects are ones that we, with all the talents existing within our membership, can handle. One project is the glazing around the glass in our windows, it is in bad shape and needs attention. Luckily most of the windows open into Goodyear so they can be done from the inside, meaning no ladders. Another project is the hanging and refitting of a closet door on the third floor, it s missing a hinge and needs to be trimmed to fit the frame. If you can help with either of these projects, give our Facilities Manager, Craig Patterson, a call at or drop him an at cjpdlp@bellsouth.net. HELP WANTED Tech Committee Craig Patterson Do you have a background in purchasing? In other words, have you ever bought anything, or have you ever been to a grocery store? Are you computer savvy and comfortable using a computer to order things online? We need a person who is on Jekyll all year to handle purchasing of paper products for JIAA for example, everything from the bags and tissue paper the front desk uses to toilet paper, dish soap, hand towels, Kleenex, toner and paper for the printers and of course, tracking inventory to ensure we never run out of the key items! If you are up to the challenge, please volunteer today or call Gloria Zocchi ( ) or more information. A Wi-Fi access point has been installed in the pot shop, beside the big gray electrical box near the outside door. It s Network ID is jiaayard and the password is noted on the cover of the access point. This access point will be physically moved during festival week to provide Wi-Fi for the outdoor activities during the festival. Once the festival is over the access point will be moved back into the pot shop. Feel free to use the access point in the pot shop and let Craig Patterson know if you have any problems. It's a THANK YOU Party! February 25 last year, you may remember, our motorhome burned down. What followed revealed the character and heart of the amazing community of Jekyll. Generosity poured in in big and small ways. JIAA and many others raised money, restaurants refused our payments, friends stored what remained of our possessions, more friends gave us their treasured hand-knit sweaters, JIA treated us to a few days at the Westin... and a thousand other kind gestures. We still shed tears of gratitude when we think of all the support you gave us. As we focused on putting the pieces back together, we failed miserably at a most important thing: thanking you! Well, we are here to fix that! Everyone is invited to a THANK YOU party. Who: everyone from everywhere When: February 25, of course, 2-4 pm Where: the new pavilion build at the campground - follow the signs for parking Why: because we love you and know we can count on you when the rubber meets the road See you there, Mahlon and Consuelo Stacy
