2 Page 2 JIAA Newsletter MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Bonnie Householder As I write this, it s one of those foggy mornings that seem to creep up on us as coastal residents, and it makes me want to get out a palette and start painting. Like most, I prefer the sun, but the stillness and foggy shroud helps me appreciate this type of weather, too for those of you who are winter residents and are here or on your way here, I ll wager you would appreciate the fog and mild temperatures as opposed to the bitter cold (and snow) at home! Safe travels as you return to your winter home, and welcome back! Hope you and your family and friends had a wonderful holiday! December was certainly a very busy month, wasn t it? The Merry Artists Show and Sale was terrific I loved Christmas shopping there, and being able to support our artists and our Arts Association. If you have items in the show, please follow the directions that have been provided to pick them up. By now you are aware we are celebrating 50 years of art on Jekyll Island the Jekyll Island Arts Association, Inc. had its founding meeting November 27, We will have special programs and events at a number of different locations around Jekyll during January 10 at Mistletoe Cottage (refreshments follow at Goodyear) kicks off the events. ORIGIN: The Founding Tale of the Jekyll Island Arts Association will be presented by Tricia Bowman, our own storyteller, who will regale you with stories of our beginning years. This presentation and the one in February, are at Mistletoe, so space will be limited. Tickets will be available for $2 with proceeds to benefit Jekyll Island Potters. At the Jekyll Island Arts Association Annual Meeting and concert in December, new Board members elected to serve a three year Board term are (left to right): Pat Lelli, Penny Osborne, Zay Foster, Donna Stillinger, and Teri Gerry. We look forward to having each of you on the Board! We are still looking for volunteers for a litany of options this year. On our website homepage is a link to the Volunteer Sign Up portal. Jekyll Island Arts Association is an all volunteer non-profit organization, and we need your help! If you take classes, enter items in the shop or the Festival, or anything else that we provide as part of your membership, we d appreciate your help for a couple of hours a month to help our operations function smoothly. 3 January 2017 Page 3 CLASSES NEWSLETTER January 2017 We are just about to start the Winter classes schedule - and there are still plenty of openings left in most classes: An old favorite like Pine Needle Basketry Beginning is coming back, as is Cathy Miller s Basketmaking Step Two; sure to be a new favorite is the Advanced Pine Needle Basketry. Other new favorites such as Felted Clogs and plarn Knitted Grocery Totes return to the list after high demand, along with Zentangle, Beginning and Continuing, and The Art of Writing Poetry and the Jekyll Island Writers Workshop: all of these have room for you! Games brainy (Mahjong) and physical (Croquet) are represented and drawing and painting and jewelry and mosaics (Yes!! Cindy will return!! with The Mosaic Birdbath, just added to the list). Discussion classes this Winter season will be Dante s Inferno (it literally heats up the whole list) and The Taming of the Shrew (generates a different kind of heat!)! Pottery classes - Beginners and Intermediate Hand Building and Wheel Throwing - are full (with waiting lists!). But there are still places in Beginners Sculpting and Intermediate Sculpting with Instructor Seeley Booth. Photography classes are waiting for you. This is not the complete list - check your Members Only pages. 249 members are registered for classes - we have 487 paid members. Let s get signed up! In order to register, you need to be a JIAA member, of course. You can pay/ renew your membership online at You can also join/renew and pay your dues by mail or at Goodyear Cottage - cash or check only - and don t forget to accompany the dues with a completed membership form, even if you are renewing. With dues paid, you can go to the Members Only page to register for classes online. Box Jekyll Island GA JEKYLL ISLAND SINGERS If you attended the Jekyll Island Singers Concert in December, you heard the history of the Singers group and you may have hummed along with us at that concert. We present two concerts a year the Christmas concert in December and a Spring Concert in March. You are cordially invited to come and sing with us. Practice is held every Monday, beginning Jan. 9, 3:00 4:30 at the Jekyll Island Methodist Church. Jekyll Island Singers is open to all members of the Arts Association and we re always looking for good singers to join us. Best of all, there is no try out! After the Spring Concert, we do not practice until September. We d love to have YOU join us. The Jekyll Singers

4 Page 4 JIAA Newsletter JIAA ARTS FESTIVAL March 10-12, 2017 The first meeting for the Festival Organization is at the Methodist Church on January 11th at 10:00a.m. and anyone willing to help would be welcome. The first half of the meeting will be describing the overall plan for the Festival arrangements and seeking ideas and input. The second half of the meeting will be divided into groups to make specific plans and determine supply and volunteer needs. LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS!! Another Jekyll winter season is upon us and it is time to think about volunteering with the Jekyll Island Arts Association. This organization gives many on the island a great opportunity to learn, share and be creative. JIAA works so well because of those who volunteer to assist at various events and with programs. We have a mailing list that you can join to hear about opportunities as they arise. Please go to the JIAA home page ( and follow the link on the left-hand sidebar to the Volunteer Sign-Up Portal to add you name to the list. As we get ready for another festival it is especially important that you let us know of your interest in volunteering. For example, this year we will need some new volunteers at Goodyear to assist members with online pre-registry of festival items. MEMBERSHIP NEWS HAVING TROUBLE LOGGING ONTO THE JIAA WEBSITE? Let us help. There are still about 1/3 of our members who appear to have either not been successful or have not attempted to log into the Members Only area of our website.
