1 2008 District 5 Al-Anon Website News, Events, Announcements, Business and Web Site Archives 2008 Past Al-Anon News, Business and Events Belleville Thursday AM/PM Groups 31 st Anniversary/Gratitude meeting with family/friends participation was held on Thursday November 27, There was a 10:00 am Gratitude meeting and an 8:00 pm Speaker Meeting (with Cindy A. speaking.) There was also a Raffle, Door Prizes and more! It was held at the First United Methodist Church, 417 Charles Street, Belleville, Michigan AWSC Meeting (Area World Service Committee Meeting) was held on Saturday November 8, 2008; in the Family Life Center at the St. Louis Church of Christ, 1075 West Monroe Road, St. Louis, Michigan. This meeting was attended by the Area officers, the Area coordinators, the District representatives, and interested members. Just For Today Al-Anon Meeting Family Anniversary Celebration took place on Saturday, November 1, 2008, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, at the Dawn Farm Community Barn, 6633 Stoney Creek Road, Ypsilanti, Michigan. Al-Anon Open Speaker Meeting: Friday October 31, Fellowship began at 8:00 pm and an Al-Anon open speaker meeting began at 8:30 pm, on the campus of the Jackson Community College and Vo-Tech Center in Adrian Michigan. Michigan Area Fall Assembly ( The Michigan Connection ) was held on October 11, 2008 in the in the Family Life Center at the St. Louis Church of Christ, 1075 West Monroe Road, St. Louis, Michigan. This meeting was an important election meeting, and Delegates and other Area officers were elected to serve three year terms. This Assembly was hosted by District 5. Planning Meeting for the Michigan Fall Assembly was held Saturday, September 27, 2008; 1:00 pm at our District Rep (Kim K. s) home in Ypsilanti. Al-Anon Open Speaker Meeting: Friday August 29, Fellowship began at 8:00 pm and an Al-Anon open speaker meeting began at 8:30 pm, on the campus of the Jackson Community College and Vo-Tech Center in Adrian Michigan. AWSC Meeting (Area World Service Committee Meeting) was held Saturday August 16, 2008; at the St. Louis Church of Christ, 1075 West Monroe Road, St. Louis, Michigan. This meeting was attended by the Area officers, the Area coordinators, the District representatives, and interested members. KOMIAC (Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana) Alateen Convention was held Friday August 1 through Sunday August 3, 2008; at Baldwin Wallace College, 275 Eastland Road, Berea, Ohio. KOMIAC was a weekend filled with excitement, fun, sharing, and unconditional love! Al-Anon s Fourth International Convention with A.A. Participation. Theme: Connecting People Around the World: Al-Anon Family Groups took place from Friday July 4 through Saturday July 6, 2008; in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The
2 Conference was a weekend filled with excitement, fun, and sharing! In addition to Al-Anon activities, there were daytime Alateen meetings and workshops, and daytime A.A. meetings and workshops. Al-Anon/Alateen Trillium 2008 Convention: "The Family Gift of Recovery." Friday June 27 through Sunday June 29, This event was hosted by Ontario South Al-Anon/Alateen and was held at the Doubletree International Plaza Hotel, 655 Dixon Road, Toronto, Ontario (Canada.) Michigan Area Spring Assembly ( Life is a Blank Canvas Make Yours a Masterpiece! ) was held on June 14, 2008, in the Family Life Center at the St. Louis Church of Christ, 1075 West Monroe Road, St. Louis, Michigan. This Spring Assembly was hosted by Districts 12 and 14. Al-Anon Open Speaker Meetings: Friday May 30, Fellowship began at 8:00 pm and an Al-Anon open speaker meeting began at 8:30 pm, on the campus of the Jackson Community College and Vo-Tech Center in Adrian Michigan. Michigan Al-Anon Family Groups 36 th Annual Convention: Bridges To Serenity was held Friday May 16 through Sunday May 18, 2008, at the Doubletree Resort, One Wenona Park Place, Bay City, Michigan. The convention was hosted by Al-Anon District 29 (Saginaw.) The Al-Anon speaker was Barbara W. from Ohio, and the Alateen speaker was Nick M. from Grand Rapids. 20 th Annual Al-Anon Adult Children Workshop and Festival: Journey Through The Land of Recovery Finding My Way Back Home took place Friday May 2 through Sunday May 4, 2008; at the Green Lake Conference Center, W2511 State Road 23, Green Lake Wisconsin. This event was organized by Al-Anon Adult Child volunteers in northern Illinois and included meetings, speakers, campfire and other fellowship, hiking and sightseeing opportunities, dancing, service opportunities, a raffle, other entertainment and hugs! For additional information, please see or call (access code 46.) The Al-Anon World Service Conference was held April 13 through April 17, 2008, in Stamford, Connecticut. A delegate from each Al-Anon Area Assembly was invited to attend to share experiences, solve problems, and make decisions about Al-Anon issues, along with WSO staff. Mike B. represented the Michigan area. Mike B. District 5 thanks you for your service!!! Alateen Spring Lock-In was held Friday March 14 to Saturday March 15, 2008, at the Central United Methodist Church, 215 North Capital Avenue, Lansing, Michigan. Alateen members were accompanied by their adult Alateen group sponsor. AWSC Meeting (Area World Service Committee Meeting) was held Saturday March 8, 2008; at the St. Louis Church of Christ, 1075 West Monroe Road, St. Louis, Michigan. This meeting was attended by the Area officers, the Area coordinators, the District representatives, and interested members. "Leave Hope" project: Tuesday, March 4, 2008 (and March 4 of every year.) This annual Al-Anon outreach project is for everyone, everywhere to leave a piece of Al-
3 Anon literature for someone to find, as 12 th Step work in celebration of our cofounder Lois W.'s birthday. Al-Anon Open Speaker Meeting Friday February 29, Fellowship began at 8:00 pm and an Al-Anon open speaker meeting began at 8:30 pm, on the campus of the Jackson Community College and Vo-Tech Center in Adrian Michigan Other Events (events that invite Al-Anon participation but are not organized solely by Al-Anon.) Changing Directions AA and Al-Anon Anniversary Dinner was held on Sunday December 7, 2008 at the UAW Local 898, 8975 Textile Road, Ypsilanti, Michigan. Dinner was at 6:00pm and the speaker was at 7:00 pm. All were welcome! Ypsilanti Heritage Festival Al-Anon Booth: Al-Anon hosted an information booth at the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival, Friday August 15 through Sunday August 18, 2008, at Riverside Park in the Depot Town area of down town Ypsilanti, Michigan. It was a great opportunity for 12 th Step work! 56 th Michigan State A.A. Convention with Al-Anon/Alateen participation: Came To Believe was held Friday August 8, Saturday August 9, and Sunday August 10, at the Valley Plaza Resort, 5221 Bay City Road, Midland, Michigan. There were A.A., Al-Anon and Alateen speakers, a hospitality room, an Alkathon, a Saturday banquet, literature and an archives display. Huron Valley Area Intergroup of A.A. 63 rd Anniversary Celebration: Unity: Our Most Cherished Quality (with Al-Anon participation) was held Saturday, April 19, 2008 from 1:30 pm to 11:30 pm at Pioneer High School, 601 West Stadium Boulevard, Ann Arbor, Michigan. This event included A.A. history, a service fair, archives display, dinner, dance, A.A. Traditions skit, speakers and more, in celebration of 63 years of A.A. in Washtenaw County. Al-Anon literature was available. Lenawee Area A.A. Intergroup Mini-Conference (with Al-Anon participation; Al- Anon Program, The Faces of Al-Anon ) was held April 12, 2008; at the Lenawee Vocational Technical Center, 1372 South Main Street, Adrian, Michigan Sponsored by the Lenawee Area Intergroup of Alcoholics Anonymous. Concurrent A.A. and Al-Anon programs took place. Al-Anon lead speaker (Kevin M. from Adrian) was followed by a sobriety count-down and an A.A. lead. The Al-Anon program included skits, panels, speakers, sharings, and a new rap performance. Please e- mail or call Maripat at for information. Southeast Michigan A.A. Round-Up: Communication and Participation: The Key to Unity and Self-Support took place Friday February 22 through Sunday February 24, 2008; at the Dearborn Hyatt Regency, 600 Town Center Drive, Dearborn, Michigan. Hosted by A.A. Area 33, General Services of Southeast Michigan. Activities included panels, speakers including Al-Anon speakers, workshops, archives, jail book sale, Saturday night banquet, Friday and Saturday night dances, hospitality rooms, Alkathon, committee tables, Spanish-speaking program and more.
4 2008 Meeting Changes, News and Updates Meeting room change: The Monday 8:00 pm Keep It Simple Al-Anon meeting at the First Presbyterian Church in Ypsilanti changed to meet in a room upstairs in December Time change: The 9:00 am Saturday Morning Steps and Traditions Al-Anon meeting at the First Presbyterian Church in Ypsilanti changed its start time to 9:30 am in November Child care change: The Wednesday 7:30 pm Just For Today Al-Anon meeting is no longer providing child care (noted in November 2008.) Location change: The Friday 8:30 pm Friday Nighters Al-Anon meeting that formerly met at the Washtenaw Alano Club moved to King of Kings Lutheran Church, 2685 Packard Road, Ann Arbor, in October New Alateen meeting: A new Alateen meeting was started on August 3, 2008; on Sundays at 7:30 pm, at the St. Luke s Lutheran Church, 4205 Washtenaw Avenue, Ann Arbor (concurrent with an Al-Anon/Al-Anon Adult Children meeting.) One-time meeting cancellation: The Monday 8:00 pm Keep It Simple Al-Anon meeting at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 North Washington Street in Ypsilanti did not meet on Memorial Day; Monday May 26, Meetings resumed on the usual Monday 8:00 pm schedule the following week. One-time meeting cancellation: The 9:00 am Saturday Serenity Seekers Al-Anon meeting at King of Kings Lutheran Church did not meet April 19 th, due to a church rummage sale. The meeting resumed its usual schedule on subsequent Saturdays. Meeting format: The Monday 8:00 pm Keep it Simple Al-Anon meeting held at the First Presbyterian Church in Ypsilanti used the Blue Print for Progress (Al-Anon's 4th Step Inventory guide) for the month of April One-time meeting cancellation: The Thursday 8:00 pm Serenity Through Recovery Al-Anon meeting at the First United Methodist Church in Belleville did not meet on Thursday March 20, 2008, due to activities at the church. The meeting resumed its usual schedule on subsequent Thursdays. Child care resumed: The Wednesday Just For Today Al-Anon meeting at Zion Lutheran Church resumed providing free child care in February One-time meeting cancellation: The Wednesday New Directions Al-Anon meeting and Power To Be Me Alateen meeting, both held at Dawn Farm in Ypsilanti, were cancelled on Wednesday February 6 due to inclement weather. Holiday Meeting Cancellation: The 7:00 pm Al-Anon meeting at St. Clare's Episcopal Church/ Temple Beth Emeth in Ann Arbor did not meet on Tuesday January 1, 2008 (the church/temple was closed due to the holiday.) 2008 Web Site Changes, Additions and Updates December 2008: We put our Al-Anon Recovery Calculator on a separate web page. November 2008: We added a District 5 Gratitude List page. We added a link to Al- Anon Faces Alcoholism 2009 on the World Services web site. We posted a new page addressing grief and loss. September 2008: We added a description of the District 5 officers service responsibilities, here.
5 August 2008: We added the Al-Anon Declaration to the home page. July 2008: We added printable Serenity Prayer bookmarkers to the Group and Member s Corner page. June 2008: We added a link on our Newcomers page to Al-Anon webcasts for newcomers on the World Service web site. We added a section on our Newcomers page addressing people planning interventions with loved ones, and addressing family members/friends of people involved with drugs other than alcohol. March 2008: We added a link on our Newcomers page to Al-Anon Public Service Announcements on the World Service web site. January 2008: We posted an annual appeal for group contributions to the District, Area and WSO on our Announcements page. We added a translation program to each page, which appears at the top of the menu bar. (Please note that the program can only translate words and phrases; it does not have the capability of correctly interpreting the context and grammar; parts of some pages may not be translated; on some computers, the language selection and the translated pages may not appear in a readable form. Despite these limitations, we hope this will help web site visitors whose preferred language is not English to be able to read our site.) We changed our menu bar to highlight selections in color.
