FOR SEPTEMBER Proulx, Gary; Robbins, Tim; Ruiz, Elva; Santee, Doris ~ ~ ~ President s Message ~ ~ ~ Only one more month and we will return to our regular meeting schedule. I hope this break has not been a burden for anyone. We have a very busy four months ahead of us. We start with the September 10 t h meeting when we will have a presentation by Les Bleamaster from Trinity University on the Planet Venus. On October 17th we will have our annual picnic at Niemitz Park in Cibolo. Details are forthcoming. For November s meeting the board is considering something we ve never done before. Back in June, the board authorized the club to purchase most of the specimens and other inventory from Kip Williams of Panther Creek Minerals. Due to space-in-the-warehouse problems, a Member s Only 1

2 Sale of some of these items could be held at the meeting. The Board has not discussed this formally; right now it is just an idea. We have so much material for the Silent Auction at our March Fiesta of Gems that the suggestion of this sale came about after a crew of too few put it all away. In December we will have our annual Christmas Party at Harmon s BBQ. More on that will be announced later. I am looking forward to seeing you all at our next meeting. I hope you have had an enjoyable summer. Bob Bowie ~ ~ ~ Program ~ ~ ~ The September meeting will feature a presentation about the planet Venus. Our guest speaker is Les Bleamaster of Trinity University. With all the new data compiled in the past few years about this planet, this should be a fascinating journey into space. ~ ~ ~ On a Personal Note ~~~ I am going to be away on a trip from late August until after Labor Day. I will not be able to prepare September s newsletter before the September meeting. If you have any items of interest for the newsletter, please send them to me as soon as possible (ASAP). I will try to keep up with any while I am away and hope to put out a brief announcement before the meeting, if necessary. Those who do not have will be called with any announcements. ~ ~ ~OTHER ITEMS OF GENERAL INTEREST~ ~ ~ Kip Williams of Panther Creek Minerals has retired his business. He has been a cornerstone of our show for many years and has always been a strong supporter of our club. His absence at our annual show next March will be a strong reminder of the dwindling number of people who have spent a good chunk of their lives in our hobby as dealers, resources, and friends. Please encourage and support all of our younger dealers who are trying to make a living while keeping our lapidarist/ rockhound hobby alive. Our very own Bob Bowie has also retired from his role as a dealer at the annual gem and mineral show in Creede, Colorado. His new goal is to decide what to do with actual garage space after these many years. Maybe he could get a bigger car now. Starting in September, Wayne Sturdevant will be returning to active membership. He and his wife have been on a mission to aid our wounded soldiers at the Joint Base hospital. He has agreed to become the club secretary. Minutes of the club meetings and the board meetings will begin appearing in this newsletter very soon. This year s rock/cactus, etc. hunt at the 4M Ranch in Sonora, Texas, is scheduled for October Reservations are being taken now. Cost is $ per person, including bed, 2 suppers, breakfast and lunch. $60.00 deposit required with each reservation. Make check payable to 4M Ranch.
