Words cannot describe the strength and dedication of our membership. They said it could not be done, but we accomplished it with the ease and grace of seasoned veterans. Who would host the Region 5 conference one week and follow it with a magnificent flower show the following week. CCDS of course!!! Personally and on behalf of your officers, I would like to thank each and every member for their fantastic efforts to make the Spring Regional the greatest ever. I am not the only person who says it is the greatest ever. The region and national AHS officers are saying we need to host the NATIONAL convention. That's a topic for our next meeting as this would be a total club effort. We had 36 individuals enter a total of 393 flowers at our recent show. Many of these were first time entrants. The winner of Best in Show had never won this before. Many of the best in category had never won before either. What a fantastic competition!!! Congrats to all the winners. Next year let's have 50 members enter 500 flowers! Garden Judges listening to Joe Scott, not shown, at McKenney s garden. Co-teacher, Earnest Yearwood, center of photo. What a treat! Our next scheduled meeting is in September and it promises to be a great one. Our guest speaker is Mark Carpenter from the Lily Farm in Centre, Texas. We also have our Fall picnic and Christmas party later this year. Your officers are meeting before the September meeting. We are planning on having an event or events before the September meeting. Anyone having an idea for a club "event" they would enjoy, let me know. More news will follow on this. In closing, I can't thank the membership enough for its outstanding efforts. David Arthur President, CCDS

2 It Was Daylily Heaven in 2011!!! AHS Region 5 Spring Conference, June Greater Atlanta and Cobb County Daylily Societies Annual Show, June 18 The Region 5 Spring Conference held from June 10 th to 12 th at the Marietta Hilton Hotel and Conference Center was mindful of a mini-ahs national meeting. Which is why our President David Arthur mentioned in his message on page one, that AHS is eyeing us as a future national conference organizer. On Friday, there were judges clinics held in conference rooms and at the McKenney s garden. A wonderful buffet dinner was followed by a lively, fun auction. And throughout the afternoon, items were on display for raffling and for sale in the boutique area. Bright and early Saturday morning, two buses full of gardeners toured four AHS accredited gardens in five hours, MP Flowers (Franklin s), Shady Rest (Bishop s), Kennesaw Mountain Daylily Garden (Waldrop s), Prissy s Garden (Arthur s). And just before the very long overdue downpour began, the busses dropped off the tourees back at the hotel. The boutique was once again opened and a grand total of fourteen concurrent and well-titled miniclinics were held in the afternoon. Most remarkably, all mini-clinic sessions began and ended on time to allow the maximum number of people to attend at least four. Dinner was followed by a business meeting and everyone was primed for the keynote speaker, Dr. Ted Petit of Le Petit Jardin. Sunday morning five additional open gardens (Bellacree Gardens (Verner s), Centerpiece Gardens (Kovach s), Garden at Polo Fields (Karen Mawry), Merilily Gardens (McLaughlin s), and the McKenney s Garden were available for touring by those with utmost stamina and passion for Hemerocallis and companion plantings. And for those with an infinite amount of stamina and passion, the Greater Atlanta and Cobb County Daylily Societies for the third year combined forces and presented their annual show and plant sale the following weekend. Show Chair Claude Carpenter was surprised at the nearly 400 entries of daylily scapes and designs. Best-in-Show Rosette Award and Best of show Large Flower H. 5 Activity Rewards Member System 2011 Our CCDS has initiated a system to reward its members! Other daylily clubs operate similar programs successfully as a way to show its active members some measure of appreciation. The concept was rolled out at our first meeting of the year by David Arthur and Mark Franklin. Bob Lust has agreed to keep a database of points accumulated by members. They describe the program this way as follows: The Activity Rewards Membership System (ARMS) is a program that rewards active members with points that equate to a dollar value. These dollars can then be used at the annual plant sale and auction held each year. To earn and accumulate points you must be a currently active (dues paying) member of the Cobb County Daylily Society. The points system works on the Honor System. To earn points a member can serve as a club officer or perform any of the activities listed below. Each point is equal to one dollar in ARMS Money. ARMS dollars last for one year and cannot be carried over to the next year. The time frame for the activity year will be from September 1 to August 31. Family members can share points. Each member has the responsibility of turning in the points reporting sheet to the Points Coordinator at each meeting or activity. All unused points will expire after the ARMS plant sale and auction. You may use real dollars to supplement your ARMS points for purchases at the auction. Permission for a club representative (committee) to purchase daylilies is granted when the CCDS members approve this points system. Donations of daylilies from individual members may also be needed for the sale and auction. Any daylilies purchased for the ARMS program that are not auctioned off will be grown for a future plant sale or auction. Each year the ARMS committee will evaluate the program for a future plant sale or auction. Each year the ARMS committee will evaluate the program to make corrections and adjustments to the points offered for activities. Only one person can earn the points. A member may accumulate up to a maximum of 500 ARMS points in one year. Forms to record ARMS points have been already been distributed at the last CCDS meeting. More will be distributed at the next meeting in September. REMEMBER that the points accumulated between Sept. 1, 2010, and August 31, 2011, need to be handed in to Robert Lust before the annual sale/auction picnic in October. They expire after that.
