Jerry Blatt I will start the article this month by asking Frosty the snowman to kindly go away. That being said, I am going to share some inner feelings with all the members. Since the time GWRRA decided to allow associate members to join our ranks, have all of us extended to these new members the courtesy we would like extended to us? I know some members that cannot ride a Goldwing because of the physical demand it places on their knees. These folks have had to find a motorcycle they can ride and still enjoy the ride. I realize we all like to joke and have fun, but fun to some may be hurtful to others. We all share the same benefits befitting a GWRRA member. We attend the same classes, we share the same benefits of Fun, Safety, and Knowledge. That brother or that sister next to you is family, let us all remember this fact the next time we act or speak. Sara and I had the pleasure of judging the Couple of the Year and the floats in Indiana in February. We had a blast!! One thing Sara and I have learned traveling to other states; you find many new ideas to bring back with you. If you are chosen as an Individual or a Couple of the Year by you Chapter and you do not proceed in the selection process you only cheat yourself out of many great memories. Sara and I are looking forward to visiting with the Chapters in the District. We are hoping to attend many chapter functions during the course of the year. We are aware a few of the activities in the District and beyond are over lapping. It is our wish that each member have their best year yet, go where and when you can. Bottom line HAVE FUN! 2 Jerry and Sue Allhands Region E Educator Educators are special people, with special knowledge about Rider and Co-Rider safety. Our job is not always easy nor do we often times hear about the fruits of our labor. Our job is to inform and promote safety to all of our members in the safe operation of riding their motorcycles. Rider Education has a large tool box full of tools we can use to accomplish our mission. One of the primary tools is the Levels Program. The Levels Program is the building block of Rider Education. Each Level has its own requirements to reach the pinnacle of Level IV. Level I is Safety by Commitment. This is where the members pledge to ride safe. Level II is Safety by Preparedness. Level II is the next step in the building block process by taking a riding course. The purpose of a riding course is to enhance the mental and physical skills needed in riding a motorcycle. Level III is Safety by Preparedness. This is the next step for being prepared for any event by staying current in Level II and becoming certified in First Aid and/or CPR, plus carry a first aid kit. Level IV which is Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness. This is the pinnacle by which we want to everyone to be. The next step to being as safe as possible by Wearing All The Gear All the Time ( ATGATT ), staying current in all Levels, being certified in First Aid and CPR with at least 25,000 safe miles. It has taken several years to develop the tools we needed for our Rider Education Programs. It is now the job of the Chapter Educator to inform and promote these programs to the members. By keeping rider safety at the fore front members can make their own choice at what Level they want to participate at. As a Chapter Educator, leading by example is the best way to show our members you believe in our RE Programs. You may never know how much influence you have on a person when they are making that choice. You may never know if you have saved someone s life or prevented an accident. What you are doing is giving each person an opportunity to make a choice. It has always been up to each person to decide what level of safety they want. We are not the police nor can we supersede state laws. We inform and promote all of our programs then leave it up to the member to decide. If you can do that then you have done all you can do. Don t forget to cover anything you would like to use later in life. Ride smart, Ride safe 2

NOW IT IS TIME TO SELECT THE 2014 CHAPTER COUPLE and INDIVIDUAL OF THE YEAR. This month we will be selecting a new 2015 Missouri District Couple of the Year and a new 2015 Missouri Individual of the Year. Will you be at Spring Fling to cheer on your Chapter Couple or Individual? They sure hope you will be there. They are appreciative of your support. What if you were that Couple or Individual, would you want your chapter there cheering you on? Of course, you would. We all like to have others show us their appreciation. SO PLEASE attend SPRING FLING and CHEER for your Chapter Couple or Chapter Individual. Not only those couples and individuals who choose to be in the selection process but THOSE CHAPTER COUPLES AND INDIVIDUALS being introduced to you. Congratulations to all the chapter couples and chapter individuals of the year. We hope to see all of you at Spring Fling. Join in the fun!!! Participate, Participate, Participate Glenn & Carol White Membership Enhancement Coordinators Last night I played a blank tape at full blast. The mime next door went nuts 3

Leadership Training For Missouri We are hoping everyone can attend the Missouri Spring Fling coming up this weekend. There are a few seminars that will be presented. John and I would like to thank Ryan Tinkler for his help in presenting a Leadership Training seminar How to Have Fun at a Rally. Our next big event for the State of Missouri will be our District Convention held during the first weekend in June. There will be several seminars which you will be able to attend during Friday and Saturday of the convention. Please check the scheduled events and make plans to attend. Presenting seminars takes these presenters some time to learn and practice their presentation... So please attend at least one seminar during our convention. You never know what you can learn! Presenters: If you haven t ed your U.1 form to Ed Nahl, please do so as soon as possible, otherwise you will lose your presenters certification. There have been several s sent out to this effect. If you did not receive this information please get in touch with us as soon as possible and we will get it to you. As a presenter you can present Rider Education or Leadership Training seminars. You must present two seminars within a two year time frame. John and Nancy Hofmann MO District Trainers Master LTP Instructors 4

As we prepare for the Missouri District Spring Fling, we are coming to the end of a year of representing the Missouri Chapters as your Missouri District Couple of the Year. It has gone by quickly, but we have had a lot of fun meeting new GWRRA family and representing the state. We were very fortunate that we were able to make most of the Region s state conventions. Unfortunately, one of us is the working spouse so vacation and work responsibilities have to meet halfway. We are looking forward to meet the Chapter s Couples of the Year and Individuals of the Year this weekend. We are excited for all of them and hope that they are excited as well. Please come and support your couples and individuals whether they are participating in the selection process or not. They have supported your Chapters and you presented them with the honor of choosing them as your Couple and Individual of the Year. One of the things we don t want to forget is to honor those that have left us this past year. We are preparing a memorial board in honor of these fine folks. Please bring a 5X7 picture and notation to post on the board. Two of the couples that were named Chapter Couples the same year as Leaster and I have lost a spouse. Please support them during this time as well. We sincerely hope that they will find it in their hearts to come be with family at Spring Fling. We look forward to seeing everyone next week at Spring Fling. I believe that we may be seeing the Region E Couple of the Year, Don and Cheri Walloch, at Spring Fling if they can dig out from Wisconsin. Please make them feel welcome. Good Lord willing, it looks like we might have some good weather and at this point are not facing the bad weather of last year. Les and Sara Gibson 2014 Missouri District Couple of the Year Why is the man (or woman) who invests all your money called a broker? 5

Some thread for that.. Stitch in Time Last month s Newsletter article was about helping a Chapter that may be struggling. This month we will share some ideas on Recruiting. This article will provide some of the more successful recruiting techniques used by Chapters. Advertise in the free weekly/bi-weekly newspaper type For Sale sheets. Put your Chapter ad under motorcycles. Most of these newspapers will not charge or charge very little for this type of ad. They are usually distributed throughout the area your Chapter serves. Some Culvers Restaurants have a SHARE night where Chapter members deliver food to customer s tables and then clean tables. Many things happen when working at the SHARE night. A Chapter will earn money. Do this three times a year and the Chapter will most likely make $ A Chapter may recruit new members by parking motorcycles outside with their Chapter banner displayed. This is a great Motorist Awareness opportunity! It s just plain FUN. The best night to work is Kid s night! Chapters can bag groceries at a large grocery store. Same principle as the above SHARE night. Wear your Chapter shirts and park your motorcycles in front of the store with banners. Saturday morning is best! Talk to as many bike riders as you can, particularly in the parking lots of big stores like Wal-Mart. If you both have ridden to the store, you already have something in common. Invite them to your gathering or the next Chapter ride. Every chapter member should carry a flier in their bike about your Chapter with gathering location and times. Remember, most of the time that new member is NOT riding a Gold Wing! If possible, when you meet for a Chapter ride try and meet at a busy parking lot. Your Chapter will draw the most attention at a busy store and this may give you an opportunity to recruit that curious motorcyclist. 6

When a new person arrives at your Chapter gathering ALWAYS greet them as soon as they enter the room. The Successful Chapters will have assigned couples that stop what they are doing, get up, greet and sit with the new person. This Host should introduce them during the gathering and when they return next month reintroduce them again. The most important thing now that you have them there is to make sure they feel welcomed and part of the group! Here is a sure way to get a perspective member to come back to the NEXT gathering and probably join your Chapter. Work out a deal with the Restaurant Manager where you hold your gathering to donate a free meal to perspective members. Explain to the manager that you would print a voucher good for a free meal where the perspective member purchases their meal at the first gathering, and the voucher is dated for next month s gathering. Tell the manager that after attending twice the perspective member will probably join and the restaurant will sell them a meal each month. Tell the perspective member that if they enjoyed the group, come back next month and the Chapter will buy their meal! Give each perspective member a voucher with the date of the NEXT gathering filled in. If your Restaurant Manager presently gives one or two free meals each month explain that it s a Win-Win to honor vouchers for new members instead. This voucher deal works very well, costs nothing, and is a fantastic recruitment tool. Each Chapter is different, so put your twist on one of the above ideas or come up with your own creative idea. It may just be the thread needed. It s the Journey. Not the Destination. Bruce S. Watkins Region E Director 7

ROCKET CITY ROAD TRIP! As you've probably heard by now, Wing Ding 37 'Rocket City Road Trip' will return to the unique city of Huntsville, Alabama for the first time since 1998! The high-tech city of Huntsville, which sprawls at the foot of a mountain in North Alabama, is a great destination for Wing Ding with its great venues, scenic riding, and unique attractions! For more information on the area, visit The Von Braun Center makes a great venue for Wing Ding and will be hosting most all of our unique needs with its Arena, Expo Hall, and free covered parking! With now having the event closer to fall, we plan to experience cooler riding weather and can hold certain events earlier, such as the Light Parade, since daylight will fade earlier in the evening! Be sure to add the GWRRA Entertainment Event, Thursday, September 3rd, into your registration and you'll get dinner, great entertainment from Speed Painter Tim Decker, and we will be doing special prize giveaways including jackets, t-shirts, and more throughout the night! We are looking forward to Wing Ding 37 next September 3-6, 2015, and hope that you will join us!
