2 What is a Children s Centre? Children s Centres offer a wide range of free fun activities for all families with children under five. We offer 6 key services: Early education; Childcare from (charges will apply depending on your circumstances); Child and family health including midwives, health visitors; Speech and language therapists and dieticians; Family support; Adult Education and help into work. This guide will take you through all the activities, services and courses that our children centres provide. Most of the services are free, just call us on for more information or to make an appointment if needed. Where: Woodberry Down Children s Centre When: Wednesdays, 10am 11am Volunteers Assessment* Help us to help local families! If you are thinking of going back to work or would like to give time to your community, this is a great way to build confidence and experience. We might be able to help you develop skills in administration, childcare, premises management and family support-drop-ins. Call reception on for more information or to put your name on our waiting list. Apply to become a Childminder Gain skills and knowledge to work from home caring for other people s children. Call for more information. Ways into Work* Ways into Work (WiW) is the Council s Programme to help residents into employment, apprenticeships, volunteering and training. The service is free if you live in Hackney, we provide: Client centered support including 1:1 advice and guidance CV writing workshops One to one job search and access to training. 4 Adult Learning: Courses and parenting programmes All courses run term time only English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)* To attend an ESOL course you need to join a class that runs from September to June. A course consists of two lots of two hour classes per week during term times. 5 NEWS Childcare Vacancies We currently have childcare vacancies in our early years settings at Woodberry Down and Hillside Children s Centres. We believe children are active learners from birth. Our dedicated staff are committed to providing childcare and education of the highest standard. Children become independent learners able to work together to solve problems using an array of materials and equipment both indoors and out. We work closely with parents by offering home visits and settling-in sessions to smooth the transition from home to setting. Regular parents meetings ensure ideas from mums and dads support nursery activities. Who is eligible for a place? Any child aged between three months and five years at Hillside Children s Centre Any child aged between two years and five years at Woodberry Down Children s Centre The child should not normally be attending any other childcare provision Cost The amount you pay depends on the age of your child and your household income. You may be eligible for up to 15 hours of free childcare and education if you have a child over 2 years of age. Who should I contact? We run welcome sessions on the last Tuesday of the month. Call reception for more information and to book a place. 27 Month Review When your child is between 2 years and 3 years of age your health visitor, early years or children centre practitioner will invite you for a developmental check. We call this a 27 month review. Short Breaks What is a short break? A short break is any service that allows a child or young person with disabilities to have an enjoyable break away from their main carer. Equally a carer can have respite from their caring responsibilities. It includes any community activity that a child with disabilities can enjoy. The short break team will share specialist advice with staff to ensure they are able to meet your child s specific needs. For more information please call hours free childcare From September 2017, you may be able to get up to 30 hours free childcare (1,140 hours per year, which you can choose how you take). If you re eligible for the extra hours, you sign up online to get a code to give to your childcare provider to reserve your place. You ll get the extra hours once the next term starts. If you ve already registered, you can sign in to your childcare account Eligibility You can usually get 30 hours free childcare if you (and your partner, if you have one) are: in work or getting parental leave, sick leave or annual leave each earning at least the National Minimum Wage or Living Wage for 16 hours a week this is 120 if you re over 25 This earnings limit doesn t apply if you re self-employed and started your business less than 12 months ago. You re not eligible if: your child doesn t usually live with you the child is your foster child either you or your partner has taxable income over 100,000 You can get 30 hours free childcare at the same time as claiming Universal Credit, tax credits or childcare vouchers. New Parents Welcome Meeting Termly welcome sessions for parents with children in Hillside or Woodberry Down Early Years daycare settings. Contact reception for the setting your child attends for more information and to book a place. Lilliput Playgroup Places available for children 2 5 years of age. 6 Fun Splash Play Scheme 2018 Funsplash is a play scheme offering fun and exciting activities both indoors and outdoors for children aged between four and ten years. Dates: Easter Half term: Tuesday 3 April Friday 6 April 2018 (4days) Summer: Monday 30 July Friday 10 August 2018 (10 days) Time: 9am-5.30pm FREE hot meal and snack! Cost: per day for Hackney residents (no sibling concessions) per day for Non-Hackney residents How to book: Full payment is required at the time of booking. Payments must be made by cash. Booking will take place at Woodberry Down Children s Centre, The Lilliput Building, Spring Park Drive, N4 2NP. Please bring proof of address to the booking session. For further information please call Laura on Safety Equipment Loan Scheme Safety equipment is available to protect your children at home, absolutely free if receiving benefits. For more information call Foster for Hackney Do you enjoy looking after children? Have you ever thought about fostering? With over 300 Hackney children in care, we need more foster carers to support and care for them. Hackney provide a range of training and support as well as generous allowances. Children and Parents with Disabilities Children and parents with disabilities and special educational needs are welcome are welcome at all children centre groups and activities. 9 Free Activities for children aged 0 5 All activities are drop-ins unless marked with an asterisk (*) which indicates that booking or registration is necessary. These activities take place at various locations please see the timetable for times and locations or call for more information. Baby Massage* 5 week course Baby massage is suitable for babies aged 0 pre-crawling. Booking required. Charges may apply for baby massage, but some free places are available. Call to book a place. Baby Yoga Drop-in Baby yoga is suitable for babies aged 6 weeks 1 year and is a great way for you to have fun and bond with your baby. Charges may apply for baby yoga, but some free places are available. Cook n Play Stay n play or have fun with a cold cooking activity, all ingredients FREE. Free Health Services Child Psychology from the First Steps Service* First Steps offer a service for children who are experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties. We aim to tackle issues early on, before they become severe. Your child/family will need an appointment to meet us, call directly on to self refer or ask your child s GP, teacher or health visitor to refer them. Dietician Discuss any concerns you have for yourself, your children or your partner s diet and eating. Please request a referral form from the children s centre and to book an appointment with one of our dieticians call Dietetic Clinic* 1st, 3rd, 5th Wednesday of the month 10am 1pm For anyone concerned about their family s diet. Booking required. Health Visitor Drop-in Drop-in for your child s regular checks or to ask questions. 10 Support for your Family Our family support service aims to help families to deal with any issues that are affecting their family s wellbeing, such as isolation, depression, housing, and for mothers and fathers who are stressed or emotionally overwhelmed. There is one-to-one support and support groups. Family support workers can also help you connect with other services. Family support is available 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. If your query is outside of office hours and you believe that a child is at risk or your family support enquiry cannot wait until the next day please contact Hackney Children s Social Care on or call 999 if it is an emergency. Family Support Surgery* Wednesdays 9.30am 12.30pm For Parents... Here are a wide range of other services, courses and classes that parents or carers may find useful, to find out more information and to book an appointment just call us unless otherwise stated. Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB)* This is an appointment only service CAB gives advice, support and information to all families with children under 5 around welfare benefits, financial support, housing, immigration and childcare. Hackney SENDIAGS* Hackney Special Educational Needs Disability Information Guidance Service Is a confidential service offering impartial information, advice and support to parents and carers of children with special education (SEN) and disabilities. One Support Surgery* Housing advice, support on applying for benefits, dealing with rent arrears, practical living skills, developing skills and training to obtain work, arranging repairs and more for families living in Hackney with children under 5. Step by Step (Out of school activities) Step by Step provides out of school activities for children with disabilities primarily from the Orthodox Jewish Community.
