2 Carers Passports what are they? DH funded project delivered in partnership by our two organisations A Carers Passport is a record which identifies the carer in some way and sets out an offer of support Its not just a card to identify the carer Its not just a discount card Carers Passports can be in employment, hospitals, schools, mental health trusts, the community, universities
3 What do Carers Passports do? Aid identification and support of carers Raise awareness of caring Provide a concrete, easily understandable offer of support Provide a mechanism that makes carers feel valued Provide help/assistance to managers or key professionals Provide a short-cut to knowing what support is needed, without having to ask lots of questions Help in local discussions and support
4 Aims of the toolkit? To identify leading practice from those doing it To provide ideas, outcomes, tips and tools a ready made case, designs, etc. to customise with logos, partners, etc. To engage with carers locally 1700 carers consulted, 10% had experience of a Carers Passport. Majority of carers without a Carers Passport felt it was a good idea, would improve recognition

11 Carers Passports in Schools, FE and HE 700,000 young carers in UK. 166,363 young carers under 18 years. 292,820 young adult carers aged % of student population have caring responsibilities. Schools, FE & HE role to play in identifying and supporting young carers & young adult carers.
12 Carers Passports in Schools, FE and HE Carers need to be identified early in education settings, and supported to access and sustain education. Clear offer. Young Carers in Schools Programme success, but no consistent offer in all schools. Similar offers to a passport: Parkdale Calderdale School Young Carer ID cards: can be shown to teachers to ensure that they do not have to explain in front of the class. Young carers gain access to time out, flexibility regarding homework and access to a phone.
13 Carers Passports in Schools, FE and HE Growing appetite in sector to support student carers in college and university, practice is developing sporadically and inconsistently. Similar offers to a passport: Hyde Community College Pupil Passport: Operates a pupil passport, also called a one page profile. This is mainly focused on children with special educational needs, also used for young carers. With appropriate permissions, shared between all agencies working with the young person, identifies what issues they are experiencing, and outlines what support they will receive.
14 Carers insights Passports would: Improve identification and recognition. Help this group achieve with their peers. Include a support offer to carer *and* family (as part of wider system). Help aspiration. [A passport might have] helped teachers to understand why I bunked off school I was 50 before I got my degree I was a student but spent more time at hospital than I did in class I had more than one relative with complex needs.
15 Carers Passports in Mental Health Trusts Approximately 1.5 million carers of people with mental health needs in the UK. NHS mental health services uniquely placed to identify carers early and help carers get support. 30+ NHS Mental Health Trusts operate the Triangle of Care model in England not a Carers Passport, but... Carers Passports have originated in relation to people with dementia.
16 Carers Passports in Mental Health Trusts Design and implementation plans for Carers Passport co-produced with carers from the very first stage and throughout process. Implemented alongside the Triangle of Care model, clearly communicated to carers, easily accessible. Invested in by Mental Health Trust, acknowledged and utilised by all staff. The passports are fantastic, the only problem is that no one reads them (staff member about another scheme) Buy-in from wide variety of local services and organisations, coordinated recording system/mechanism.
17 Carers insights Passports would: Improve recognition. Involve/engage staff. Involve carers as expert partners in care. Support person with mental health needs. [A passport] would have allowed the person I cared for to feel more relaxed and confident about the treatment she was receiving - also to know I was present and being involved would have made her more likely to be receptive of the need to be there, rather to fight against it as she felt isolated.
