Invoicing is not an option.** President s Message Elections have been decided, the turkey is prepped (or gone depending on when you are reading this), and the end of the year is quickly approaching. This is the time of year when ASHRAE is in full swing. We ve had two regular meetings: One on Fan Technology and the other on Raising the Bar above NEMA Premium. They were the first in a long schedule of valuable and informative events. Jarrod Foster and his Programs Committee have been doing a great job lining up interesting programs for this year. The programs schedule is listed in the newsletter and on our website as well at We are very excited about our December 4 th chapter luncheon meeting, as it is a joint meeting with USGBC. This is shaping up to be a very interesting meeting that s topic will be IECC vs ASHRAE Our guest speaker is highly respected and possesses a broad spectrum of perspective on this subject. We anticipate a large turnout for this meeting so mark the date in your calendars. Happy Holidays! 2 December Presentation: Energy Code Compliance Overview By Brandon Damas Monday, December 4th, 2017 at Clarion Hotel Kansas City th St. Lenexa, KS Presentation Overview This is a joint meeting with USGBC. This presentation on Energy Code Compliance qualifies for the following association credits: GBCI Approved Credit Hour Course # AIA Approved Credit LU HSW Course #HTS - ECCO This presentation will focus on complying with the energy code and how codes/ standards are developed. There are three ways to show compliance under the current international codes and each option will be explored in more detail. Additionally, the main differences between ASHRAE and IECC 2015 will be discussed to give designers a better idea of which path is right for particular projects all while maintaining proper health, safety, and welfare of projects. Lastly, some common design Interpretation questions and answers about the code or standard will be given. THIS PRESENTATION WILL COVER: How codes and standards are developed The changes between IECC-2012 and IECC-2015 Compliance paths to meet the energy code Key differences between 90.1 and the IECC Common misconceptions when trying to show compliance to code About the Presenter Brandon Damas Brandon is a Senior Account Manager for HTS. In his current role, he provides engineers and owners in the DFW area with unique design and construction solutions for projects in commercial and industrial markets. Prior to joining HTS in 2011, Brandon worked for a national, MEP consulting firm in Dallas, Texas for four years. Brandon is an ASHRAE member and serves as an at large board of governors member, previously serving as President, CTTC Chair, Dallas Chapter Secretary, Membership Promotion Chair, Research Promotion Chair, and Treasurer. Brandon is a registered professional engineer in Texas, holds 3 different ASHRAE certifications, and is LEED accredited in building design and construction. He is a voting member of ASHRAE 90.1 project committee, a voting member of ASHRAE 90.1 mechanical subcommittee, a provisional corresponding member for T.C (healthcare facilities), and a provisional corresponding member for T.C (air-to-air energy recovery). He has a degree in architectural engineering from Kansas State University.

3 Historian Update How Wrinkled Pages Started an Industry: In 1902, Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing and Publishing Company in Brooklyn, New York was having a problem with magazine pages to wrinkle. Buffalo Forge Company and their 26-year-old engineer (Willis Carrier) helped find a solution. Carrier s Apparatus for Treating Air could humidify (by heating water) or dehumidify (by cooling water) the air in the plant. This apparatus was used on the inlet of the fan. The drawing from Carrier s US Patent application is shown below. Carrier continued to work at Buffalo Forge in their engineering department for over a decade during which he was involved in many engineering endeavors, including the discovery of the link between relative humidity, absolute humidity and dewpoint temperature. His Rational Psychrometric Formulae was ground breaking information when presented at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) annual meeting in Eventually Buffalo Forge changed their focus causing Willis Carrier and six other engineers to start Carrier Engineering Corporation for $32,600 in Now Carrier has over $12 billion in capitalization and over 43,000 employees, wouldn t it be nice to have that kind of returns in our 401(k)! 4 Student Activities Scholarships: Deadline approaching quick. A lot of great opportunities for scholarships, don t wait till last minute to get them in. Last year there were very few applications turned in at the local level and even nationally for the society scholarship. Deadlines are fast approaching, Local KC ASHRAE scholarship is due Friday, December 8 th, 2017 ( ASHRAE society scholarship is due Friday, December 1 st, 2017 ( Annual ASHRAE High School Job Shadowing Program: Shortly after the first of the year we will be coordinating our annual Job Shadowing program. Let me know if you or your company are interested in showing high school juniors and seniors what a profession in engineering or contracting entails. It is just a 2 hour commitment with 4-6 students. STEM: STEM activities are a good way to get young kids interested in our profession. If anyone wants to present a STEM activity to any K-12 students and doesn t know what to do, then please reach out to Keith or Adam and they will provide you with multiple activities. We will give you the instructions, supplies, and everything you need to get K-12 students excited about our profession. Government Grassroots Advocacy Committee I2SL Education Day Update: Several ASHRAE members were in attendance and/or presenting on energy efficient laboratory design. A big thank you to these members who helped make the day a success! JOCOBO Update: Recent discussions center on building code adoption of the ICC 2018 site unseen. Other relevant topics of discussion last month included residential construction with a focus on application of fire codes and sprinkler requirements. A large multi-building apartment fire on an active construction site in Overland Park this past summer spurred many of the JOCOBO jurisdictions to reexamine their interpretations of the applicable codes. This construction site fire resulted in several smaller fires over a mile away from blowing embers. Active legal cases continue to be heard regarding who is responsible when the embers blew from the construction site to catch other residences and retirement facilities on fire as a result and then those fires spread to neighboring structures as well.

The ASHRAE chapter member that encourages one of the next five new chapter members to join ASHRAE gets either FREE attendance to December s meeting or a $25 gift card! 6 YEA (Young Engineers in ASHRAE) Happy Hour: Young Engineers in ASHRAE had their 4 th quarter event on November 9 th at CharBar, and it was a great turn out! We couldn t have done it without our sponsors. Thanks to CFM Distributors who sponsored the reservation, food, and drinks for the event. Another thank you to Burns & McDonnell who sponsored our raffle give away- gift cards to Chipotle, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Bass Pro. We had RSVPs from over 25 people, and a few others in attendance. 2nd Annual Bowling Tournament: We also were excited to announce that we will be hosting our 2 nd Annual YEA Bowling Tournament at the beginning of February. We will be seeking out company teams these next few months.
