PRESIDENT S CORNER We are excited to begin another year of CSI meetings and activites. We welcome our new Board Members John Bugg and Robert Hoppe and thank them for becoming involved.

2 PRESIDENT S CORNER We are excited to begin another year of CSI meetings and activites. We welcome our new Board Members John Bugg and Robert Hoppe and thank them for becoming involved. This year we continue the development of the Chapter and encouraging involvement from a widening array of people. Katharine, Anne and I attended the Southeast Region Conference this year and came away with a couple ideas that we hope will enable the Chapter to offer more to our members and the community. One of the big ideas I came away with was the observation that our membership and meeting attendance is open to anyone interested in the built environment. This year we would like to encourage more attendance from all parts of the community especially contractors, subcontractors, building officials and concerned citizens. If there is any aspect of our agenda that would improve your attendance at the meetings, please do not hesitate to call or me or another Board member. We have tried to locate and time the meetings to be convenient however if you have any suggestions please do not hesitate to pass them along. Some of the activities we have scheduled this year are: 1. October 20 th : A discussion on energy, including where we are and where we want to go with the application of energy standards and all aspects of applying energy tools in design. We will have a few professionals to help stimulate discussion and welcome your attendance and ideas. 2. November 7th: A day of continuing education which will include the State of Florida required Advanced Code courses. 3. Our Holiday get together is tentatively December 10 th. 3 Offers benefits to all members of the construction team. Facilitates an exchange of information not found in one-discipline organizations. Leads the industry in developing cutting-edge technical support programs. Provides certification programs and continuing education. CSI is an organization that includes the entire spectrum of the construction industry, so you are meeting people involved in all aspects of the industry. We have members who are architects, engineers, interior designers, sales representatives, building officials, contractors and subcontractors. We have had very stimulating discussions during the meetings on the way different people in the industry view the subject at hand. Our attendees have also helped one another in finding employment opportunities. We plan each meeting to try to bring continuing education and discussions on subjects we are involved in daily to help us all get a better understanding of the material we work with and items that are changing in the systems we use. We make every effort to schedule courses that offer continuing education credits. Particularly if you are involved in any aspect of material or system selection for projects, then CSI is definitely something you should be involved in. We are also trying to make our meetings beneficial to LEED professionals. I would like to ask those of you who are leading firms and companies to encourage the younger professionals to attend so you and all others in the community can gain by their gain in knowledge and contacts in the profession. Often I think that if staff is encouraged to attend by the leaders they will more likely come. They will know that you think the time is well spent. I think it is very worthwhile to allow one or two people to spend a couple of hours a month to stay on the leading edge of building systems. Add to that the fact that we only meet seven times a year, that is not a very large investment in time. Companies may also want to rotate the people sent so it is a lower impact on your overall organization. It would also be a good idea if the seasoned professionals would bring at least one of the younger people in their group to introduce them to the wider community. Please remember that we do not require membership to attend the meetings. It would be nice to have a flood of new members, but we have an open door policy for anyone to attend as a guest as many times as you like. Please consider becoming a member. The cost is very reasonable ($ per year for national and local dues) and compared to other organizational dues it is a bargain for the opportunities presented. Since our regular programs are usually no cost for members, you will be getting most or all of your membership costs back in the activities. We hope to see you at the events this year. 4 CODE CONFERENCE: CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES The Jacksonville CSI Chapter is scheduling a Code Conference of continuing education courses related to the Florida Building Code for Friday November 7 th, 2014, at the UNF HUC located at Alumni Drive. More information and registration form with instructions will be available in September, but here are the main highlights: Ron Leiseca, CSI, CCPR, ICC, BOAF, AIA Allied AURORA STORAGE AND FILING AURORA, ILLINOIS Courses will be taught by accredited instructor and will qualify for architects, interior designers, engineers, contractors, building officials and select other licensed construction professions A total of 7 CEH will be scheduled including 2 CEH of Florida Code Advanced course The one fee will include continental breakfast, breaks and lunch along with notes Attendance will be reported to AIA CES and CILB with all participants also being sent a certificate of attendance Sessions will begin promptly at 8 AM and conclude by 4:30 PM with appropriate breaks (exact schedule will be supplied with registration from) Seating is limited CSI Specifications for Aurora Shelving, Aurora Library, Aurora Mobile Mechanical Assist and Electric Mobile are posted below in a userfriendly and editable form for projects. Written in the CSI format widely recognized by the architectural, design, and general contracting community, they contain the technical detail required to meet project specifications for most storage systems. On November 21, 2012, Rule 61G1-24, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.), outlining the continuing education hours (CEH) requirements changed from 20 hours to 24 hours (22 hours in health, safety, and welfare related courses and 2 hours in the Florida Building Code Advance course). Information regarding the requirements can be found in the F.A.C. and in the Architecture Continuing Education Handbook. When an architect renews beginning February 28, 2015, he/she will attest to completing 24 continuing education hours for the previous two calendar years. A calendar year is January through December. The board no longer accepts optional self-directed study courses. The Board has made several changes noted in the above notice that was sent out about two years back, which became effective for this bi-annual review: (Continued on following page ) 3
