Cynics say the reason is that no one could stand any more of its wintry weather. Even at its worst (and this month at its worst is almost unbearable), February s steady increase in daylight reminds me winter won t last forever. So to mark this month, here is some increased daylight on the Central Kentucky Chapter s activities. First, we welcome our February speaker Richard Carroll, Executive Director of the Kentucky State Board of Accountancy. He ll bring us up to date on current requirements related to a CPA license. I hope you ll make plans to attend on February 12. On Thursday, May 7 we will welcome highly regarded speaker David Cotton as presenter at the spring PDT. Registration forms are coming out this month, so make plans now to join us at the Kentucky History Center for 8 hours of CPE covering ethics, fraud prevention, and more. If you can t wait for CPE, two Tennesseebased AGA chapters are holding PDTs next month. The Chattanooga Chapter s PDT will be March 19-20, while the East Tennessee Chapter hosts the Southeast Regional PDT in Gatlinburg on March More details appear elsewhere in the newsletter. Remember to support this quarter s community service recipient, the Franklin County Humane Society. You can bring a monetary or in-kind donation to AGA s February and March monthly meetings. Central Kentucky Chapter CGFMs will have an extra reason to celebrate CGFM Month in March. All CGFMs receive a free meal and CPE at the March meeting. Young Professionals Chair Lee Ann Watters is distributing information on a $1,000 scholarship available to junior and senior accounting majors. Spread the word to any eligible students or to faculty friends; application deadline is April 30. Let s hope your February is short but sweet chocolate helps! February Member Benefit Networking is a big benefit of AGA membership. What s more, as a member becomes more involved, networking opportunities increase. Here in the Central Kentucky chapter, dozens of people from several agencies and other employers attend every monthly meeting. Many more attend the spring and fall PDTs. Informal face to face conversations at these events build connections and trust, even when the topic is the weather or the latest ballgame rather than work. These ties open the door for discussions about professional matters, such as pros and cons of agency procedures or details about an open position. Serving on the Executive Committee roughly doubles a member s networking occasions remember that this spring when new officers are recruited. Attending regional and national AGA events greatly expands the field of networking contacts. As an example, a few years ago I attended the Dallas PDT shortly after starting work on the health plan audit. I met the auditor for Dallas s health plan while we were standing in line for a closest to the pin golf contest. Comparing notes with him helped with context when I came back to the audit. AGA s large national and regional events provide dozens of similar connections to participants.
