TABLE OF CONTENTS: What is CKI.1 Communication...1 The K-Family..2 Service Projects.3 CKI Lingo.4 Conventions...5 Socials..5 The Board 6 Reflection 6 Your New Editor.7 Governor s Word...7 Contact Info...8 Circle K International (abbreviated CKI) is a nationwide chain of convenience store just kidding. Actually, CKI is VERY different from that but we still like to serve our community as well as hang out with our fellow members and lead in our organization. What activities do we do? Well, in short, service. But in this survival guide you will see we do a LOT for service as well as a smorgasbord of fun socials. Community service, spur-of-the-moment dinners at Applebee s, and conventions are a small sampler of what is in store in your CKI experience! CKI has three tenets; Service, Fellowship, and Leadership. Service is simple, serving others around us, but it can be executed a number of ways through a lot of various projects that we do throughout the year! Fellowship basically encourages social times between members of our club, What is Circle K International? members in other clubs, etc. Socializing is a key part of life and a really integral part of Circle K International. Last but not least, there is Leadership. There are several opportunities for leadership in our organization, especially on the club level. It is a really handy skill that will come into use several times during your life and one you would want to learn how to use. The really good way to learn leadership is by being on the executive board (see page 6) and attending conventions (see page 5). We hope that brief blip on what we do here at State College of Florida CKI helped you give a small idea of what we do, but this survival guide will give you a better idea. Thank you for showing interest in CKI! And we hope you stick around! Communication, a Key Component -- One important thing you might want to know while being a member in this organization is to be caught up on what is happening in our club. It is a well known fact that communication is a life skill that is one of the handiest as well. Let me emphasize this, don t be afraid to ask for anyone s phone number regarding anything going on in our club. A Chinese proverb states, One who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; one who does not ask a question remains a fool forever. We want you in our service projects and we want you to attend our socials and our conventions. But if we want things to be silky smooth, we all have to communicate. During meetings, sign-in sheets are passed around for projects. It is important that you know whether or not you can attend. It is also a key component of how we communicate as a club. Some events involve carpooling, some events may have spur of the moment activities happen, so it is important you sign-in if you plan on going to a project. It is also really helpful to know when important events happen in advance, especially for those ABOVE: What does do these animals have in common? They both probably don t know what CKI is. Photos by: Unknown. who work a full or part time job. But in the end, communication is a key essential in everyday life and it is especially important in CKI! 2 Welcome to the Family The K-Family Kiwanians are always willing to help you out with anything about your club. They would also love to hear what activities you ve been doing! CKI is one small but vital part of a larger collective of service organizations called the Kiwanis family or K -Family. In this section we will be covering the sister organizations of CKI. We will start off with our parent organization Kiwanis International which is a service organization primarily serving children and their communities. It has over 8,000 clubs in 96 countries; with over 260,000 members. Next is another big member of the K-Family and arguably one of the more influential, Key Club. It is a service organization aimed at high school aged teenagers and has around 245,000 members and on nearly 5,000 high school campuses today. For middle school students, there is the Builders Club. And for younger, elementary school age students, there is the K-Kids. Another valuable member of our family, last but certainly not least, is the Aktion Club. A service organization that aids mentally/ developmentally disabled members to perform service projects in their areas. We primarily work with Kiwanis clubs and Key Clubs in our area. It is welcomed that you occasionally attend a meeting of a nearby club to share service project ideas, upcoming events, and sometimes just plain socializing. As you may know, networking is an ABOVE: The logos of the other K-Family clubs. Photos Kiwanis International Visit Your Sponsoring Kiwanis Club! A word of advice that should apply to everybody, every month you should visit local and your sponsoring Kiwanis clubs. They do a lot for your club and helped build it, you should be involved with them too! Attend their meetings, get service project ideas, and have a good time being with the K-Family. Kiwanians are always willing to help you out with anything about your club. They 2 important skill and the K-Family is a very valuable and friendly network to be a part of! So pull up a seat at the K-Family table! would also love to hear what activities you ve been doing! If you need more information about Kiwanis and the K-Family, don t hesitate to contact our district K-Family chair Ashley Drachler! Ashley Drachler adrachler@gmail.com Phone: (941)

3 District and International Service Projects There are several service partners that our entire organization supports worldwide: March of Dimes A walk for fundraising research in trying to find a cure for premature births; trying to find a cure for birth defects and lowering the infant mortality rate. UNICEF The United Nations Children s Fund. CKI helps UNICEF in two ways, the Six Cents initiative and Trick or Treat for UNICEF. The Six Cents Initiative is about donating money for water purification tablets used in underdeveloped countries that only cost six cents to save a child s life from dehydration. BetterWorldBooks.com This website helps out with literacy around the block and around the world by collecting old books from colleges and libraries. You can also buy textbooks from them with a special 10% CKI discount! STUFH Students Team Up to Fight Hunger. The organization hopes to link colleges to local food banks and raises awareness of local hunger among the student population. For more on these international service partners, visit: These are some of the projects we have done locally (in the district) with a lot of famous names and organizations: Big Brothers, Big Sisters An organization dedicated to mentoring underprivileged children matched with a big that can help them with problems or just have fun. Relay For Life A walk put on by the American Cancer Society held in several communities. An all-night event fundraising toward a cure for cancer put on by the American Cancer Society. Ronald McDonald House A house for families visiting their sick children located near hospitals, sponsored by McDonalds. We primarily serve them by cooking meals and donating pull tabs. 4 First off, I would like to say thank you for joining this fine organization. But I know most of you new people need a quick guide of sorts on our traditions and lingo. BRBR: Board Recreational Bonding Retreat; a day devoted to teambuilding exercises. Board Meeting: A meeting of the executive board, mainly plans miscellaneous stuff. Builders Club: Middle school level service organization of the Kiwanis Family. Business: Business attire; shirt, tie, pants, and jacket for guys. Dresses for girls. Positions are President, Vice Pres., Secretary, Treasurer, and Editor. Fundraising: Chair that plans club fundraisers to raise money for the club. Governor: The main leader of a district. Happy Cents: A spare change fundraiser our club uses as petty cash. Normally you drop a coin in and say why you re happy. Hour Sheets: Monthly forms you turn into the secretary, important to keep our club active. 4 LSSP: Large Scale Service Project; a service project consisting of a large group of people. LTC: Leadership Training Conference; a board retreat that trains attendees about their job and their roles in the organization. Mailboxes: Some conferences have mailboxes, brown paper bags with your name on them, used to relay messages to. Kind of like Valentine s Day. Pledge: An oral pledge recited at the end of practically every meeting. I pledge to uphold the objects of Circle K International. To foster compassion and goodwill towards others through service and leadership. To develop my abilities and the abilities of all people. And to dedicate myself to the realization of mankind s potential! PR: Public Relations, chair in the club that spreads the word about CKI to others. Scrapbook: Chair in the club that organizes the club s scrapbook and scrapbook sessions. Social: A gathering of 5+ members doing whatever. Circle Kapers: AKA Kapers; the Florida District newsletter, a compilation of stories from various clubs and more by the district editor. CKI: Cool Kids International? No, Circle K International abbreviated, but we could also call ourselves that. Committees: Members that have chairs in the club that work on specific jobs. Headed by the club Vice President. Chairs include Con/Con, Fundraising, K-Family, PR, and Scrapbook. Con/Con: Conventions/Conference Chair, normally in charge of handling paperwork or money involving conventions. ICON: International Convention; like DCON but on a grand, international scale. IDEAS: Inspire, Develop, Educate And Serve; District-wide conference that is held months before DCON. K-Family: Kiwanis Family, consisting of all of the clubs in the Kiwanis organization. Key Club (KC): The high school level organization of the Kiwanis. Kiwanis (KI): The main service organization of the Kiwanis Family. Focuses mainly on serving children. Lieutenant Governor (LTG): The main leader of a division. Oversees clubs in the division. Sub-Region: A division of international consisting of numerous districts and divisions inside the districts. Tabling: A recruitment method to rally more students to join our club. Normally done during rush weeks. Vice President: Club officer that oversees committees. Y ALL: A mostly social conference held in the South every MLK Jr. weekend (January).

5 Conventions: What are they and why? On the previous page you may have read of several conventions. What are they? Are they fun? Are they all serious business? Are they all expensive? Conventions, in short, are a gathering of CKI members for both fun and business. Some can be just plain socials and service; like Y ALL and LSSP. Others can be primarily business oriented, with some social time mixed in, like District Convention (DCON) and IDEAS. It is important that you attend conventions because it gives you a better idea of who you are, allow you to meet a wide array of people around the world, and gives our club a good representation of our school. There are lots of travel opportunities thanks to conventions. Some cool places our club has been to before include Denver, Portland, Charleston, Miami, and more. District Convention is the biggest convention for our club and one we highly recommend you attend. It is held around late February/ early March. It also gives you a really good idea of how CKI is run and what we are about as well! BELOW: Alex Garner (USF-Tampa) takes on a master of the martial arts at DCON Needless to say, Alex s butt got owned. LEFT: At some conventions, business attire is a must because you know you re one suave person. Photo by: Carl Fridh ABOVE: CKI members painting a carnival game at LSSP BELOW: CKI has some high class individuals as well. Why isn t Alex reading the Kapers?

6 The Club Board: A Leadership Opportunity The club board is a very valuable resource and leadership opportunity open and accessible to anyone willing to participate. Elections are held every February for five executive positions in this order with their job description: President Oversees the club and board and runs the meetings. Vice President Oversees the committees of the club, also made by them. Secretary Oversees minutes at meetings and compiles the hours the club does for service, socials, and meetings. Treasurer Oversees the club s financial situations. Editor Writes up newsletters and basically archives or recaps the club s activities. There are several committee chairs that are set up by the Vice President and varies from year to year. You might want to contact the vice president if you are interested in a committee position. Aside from making decisions, being on the club board gives you further opportunities in our organization such as the district board or even the international board! It all starts here! BELOW: Being a part of a club board is a fun, but great, responsibility. Pictured are 3 members of the district board having fun at a service project. A Reflection on CKI from a Longtime Member BY: John Sullivan Florida District CKI Administrator CKI members: The one and only piece of advice I can give you about your time in CKI is that the more time and energy you give the organization, the more you get in return. There are numerous leadership, service, and fellowship opportunities out there, waiting to be grabbed. As you get more involved, you will have opportunity to create some of those opportunities for yourself and others. Its fun and rewarding to participate in projects and events, but the rewards of planning and executing those events are even greater, because they give you experience you can carry with you into any profession or future pursuit you undertake. At some things you will succeed brilliantly. At others, you will fail. Either way, you become a better leader and a better person for it. The bonus to all of this is that you also get to travel and make lifelong friends at the same time. Its fun, its rewarding, and it benefits others. Its an experience limited only by your passion, level of commitment, and ability to imagine and execute new projects and ideas. ABOVE: John Sullivan, a longtime member of CKI and now a district administrator....the more time and energy you give the organization, the more you get in return.

7 ABOVE: Yours truly. Carl Fridh, district Editor. Face painting at the Autism walk was a lot of fun and of course we all get carried away in service! Meet Your New District Editor Hello Florida District! My name is Carl Fridh and I am your new district editor! I hope you will enjoy this issue and other upcoming issues of the Circle Kapers. If your questioning my credibility in editing, as a matter of fact, I have been Manatee Community College s (now State College of Florida) editor for the 2008 and most of 2009 year. I also won the William Thacher Outstanding Club Newsletter award at DCON 2009 for my work on The Shaft. I know a lot of you have been eagerly awaiting a new issue of the Kapers and I m sorry everything has been taking so long. But now things are back on track and I hope you are cozy in your leopard-print Snuggie, with a large glass of grape juice, right next to a fireplace reading this issue of the Circle Kapers and enjoying it. And if you enjoy it a lot, why not contribute to the Kapers? Write a short blurb of a service project your club has been doing. Write a shout out about a member, because everybody loves seeing their name in print! It doesn t have to be too long, and pictures would make the story even better! After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, or a tenth of that But again, I hope you enjoy this issue of the Florida Kapers! Submit your Articles, Pics, and Shout Outs! them all at: circlekapers@gmail.com And you may soon see them in a future issue! A Word from your Governor Krystal BY: Krystal Weaver Florida District Governor University of South Florida Tampa Hello Florida! I would like to welcome you into the CKI family and tell you about some of the great things that you have signed up for! This is not your average service organization; we pride ourselves on being a FAMILY. We are the collegiate branch of the Kiwanis family. This family includes people of all ages that work together to serve the world. There are many ways that we help the world; from attending Relay for Life cancer walks, to Christmas caroling at retirement homes, the service never stops. We are always serving, whenever there is a chance. However, we are not JUST a service organization. We also give many leadership opportunities. We are a small organization that has many officer roles, there are also opportunities to lead projects and event become president of the whole international organization! There are many conferences and conventions where you can learn these leadership skills from other people in this family and professionals in the world. You have just joined a network full of limitless opportunities that will help you with your everyday life! The last tenant of CKI is fellowship. We don t just volunteer and lead, but we meet our lifelong friends in this organization. You are meeting people that all have the same passion as you while doing great things for the community. The best feeling in the world is to serve, lead, and be in the company of great friends. If you are still debating whether or not to join, know that CKI is for anyone and everyone. We are all inclusive and everyone finds their place in CKI! Welcome to the greatest organization that I have ever known!
