They agreed to have next year s annual meeting around the Lake of Ozarks on June 26 & 27 so put these dates in your calendars (or Palm Pilots). I know it seems that the meeting dates are far off but it will be here sooner than you think. We are already starting to look for speakers and topics so if you have some ideas or suggestions of topics you would like to have covered at the meeting please contact Chris Cuppett at ccuppett@cobank.com, the chapter program chair person. A few mentioned in our board meeting were Motor Fuel Tax Reporting, Economic Outlook, BioTerrorism Tracking and Reporting, and Software Solutions. Please let Chris know if you have contacts for speakers for any of these topics or any additional ones. Another subject we discussed at the mid-year board meeting was our chapter hosting the 2008 National meeting. I know it seems like a long time before 2008 but we need to start our planning. The board discussed several locations of where to have the meeting and it appeared the consensus was to have the meeting in a location within the chapter s geography. We then narrowed it down to three locations; Branson, MO, Kansas City, MO and St. Louis, MO. Bill and I will provide these locations to the National board at our upcoming mid-year meeting in January. If you have any preferences or other ideas please let us know. This will be a great opportunity to showcase our chapter. One goal of the chapter this year is to get our local chapter committees more active. I hope if you are a chairperson or member of a committee that you will actively become involved in each committee. One committee that will need to be active soon is the nominating committee, as they will need to determine how we should go about electing the board of directors in accordance with the new chapter by laws. If your committee hasn t met yet this year or doesn t have anything planned, please review your plans as we will want to have each committee provide a report at the next Chapter board meeting in late January/early February. I hope you have been actively working to obtain new members for the chapter. As of September 30 we have 175 total members, which are down from the 188 members we had at year end last year, and are slightly below our membership goal for the year. Please help Mike Turner our membership chair in getting new members before year end. On the national level, you will see the National Director s report in this Newsletter. I want to mention that the next Annual National Chapter meeting in 2006 will be held in Nashville, TN on August 7-9, which isn t a month end, and the location should be close for almost every Mississippi Valley member. I hope you will plan to attend. As always we are looking for ways to make your NSAC membership an even better value to you so please pass along any feedback you have. 2 NATIONAL DIRECTORS REPORT By Dan Malan I want to thank Bill Erlenbush for all his years of service as a national board member representing our chapter and personally for the assistance he has given me in trying to understand this job. I m glad he will still be an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee for another year, as we still need his leadership at the national level. We reported on the 2005 annual meeting in our last report and though it will be difficult to top, I am really looking forward to next year s meeting in Nashville, TN. The dates are August 7-9, which isn t a month end, so we have eliminated a problem that some of our members have had with past meeting dates. Also Nashville is close for many of us, especially our southern members, so I hope we can be represented well at this upcoming meeting. Watch your for upcoming announcements. The executive committee has met by phone on October 20 th to get an update on several issues and plan for the upcoming Mid Year board meeting. For 2006 the members of the executive committee are: Dave Cummings President Electric Coop Chapter Ron Hennen Vice-President/President-Elect North Central Chapter Dan Malan Secretary-Treasurer Mississippi Valley Chapter Richard French Far West Chapter Dan Groscost South Atlantic Chapter Bill Erlenbush Immediate Past President Mississippi Valley Chapter We were able to review the financial results of the annual meeting which showed we made approximately $26,000 above expenses. Also the attendance was up with 247 registered, 3 staff, and 150 guests. We reviewed the upcoming meeting in Nashville and the host committee is moving well along with plans. They are looking to move the golf tourney back to Sunday and are still researching an activity for the President s reception. We all should pay attention to the upcoming national meetings as we will be looking to host the 2008 meeting. I plan to present to the National board at the mid year meeting the potential sites of Branson, Kansas City and St. Louis, which I felt was the consensus from the chapter mid year board meeting. If you have any other feelings please let me know. We will have time to have more discussions and do more planning during the year, but we should try to decide on a site at our chapter annual meeting next June. If you have any ideas on this please let any of our chapter officers know. We will be calling on you to help with the meeting as we get closer. The executive committee also discussed the 2005 goals and the committees that have submitted action items. We are looking to get more input from the committees by our mid year meeting. If you are on a National committee please be sure your committee has submitted their action item to help the society meet its goals. The year to date net income as of September 30 was $66,000 including a $1,800 gain from investments. It looks like we should be able to exceed the budgeted year end income of $52,000 for the year. This is a nice situation to be in and we expect to budget a profit next year without increasing membership dues. However, we still continue to lose members at the national level. At September 30 the national members were 1,508, which is down from the 1,550 we hope to have by year end and 1,590 we had last year end. As you can see, we still haven t quite stopped the drop in membership numbers, so the board is asking for new projects to fund in 2006 that will add value to an NSAC membership. We are searching for ways to regain membership in 2

3 the future. Also the board continues to look at ways to work with other similar cooperative accounting groups like NRECA. If you have any ideas in this area please let me know. The board will meet again in January for our Mid Year meeting. This year our meeting was going to be in conjunction with NCFC in New Orleans, but like a lot of things, our plans were changed by Hurricane Katrina. However, we now have rescheduled along with NCFC in the Orlando area in January. Thank you for letting me be your national director. MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE UPDATE By Mike Turner, Chairman The current membership of the Mississippi Valley Chapter as of September 30, 2005 is at 175 members. We are 8 short of the 2004 membership level of 183 members. We still have some time to reach last year s level, but it will take some extra effort to reach it. You can help in this initiative by putting the following objective at the top of your To Do list: 1) Recruit one new member into the Mississippi Valley Chapter of NSAC. 4 MEMBERS IN THE NEWS NSAC Member Makes Big Hit at Busch Stadium Monday, November 7, 2005 marked the beginning of the demolition of Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. Demolition crews will be making way for the new stadium that will be used next season by the team. One of our Mississippi Valley Chapter members was the center of attention at a ceremony held to start the demolition. Glenda Postin, Assistant Controller for Sunrise Ag Service Company and long-time member of the NSAC was the lucky winner of a charity raffle held for the benefit of Cardinals Care, the United Way of Greater St. Louis and Gulf Coast hurricane victims. As a result, Glenda won the opportunity to signal the first swing of the wrecking ball to begin the demolition of the stadium. 6 EDITOR S NOTES By Mary Fortney, Editor I am sure many of your companies celebrated National Cooperative Month during October. Cooperatives serve 120 million members, or four in 10 Americans. They operate in virtually every industry and range in size from small storefronts to Fortune 500 companies. Thanks to Bill Erlenbush for the following update from NCB: NCB Co-op 100 Each year, the National Cooperative Bank (NCB) issues its top 100 cooperative list. The top coop in terms of revenue for fiscal year ending 2004 was CHS, Inc. with $11.1 billion in sales. In fact, agricultural cooperatives shared the first three spots with Dairy Farmers of America next, followed by Land O Lakes. The final two spots in the top five went to Wakefern Food Corp. and TOPCO Associates LLC, both grocery coops. In total, agricultural coops led the way with $62.2 billion in sales. Grocery coops generated $31.4 billion and Finance coops generated $10.3 billion in revenue. Energy and Communications coops were close behind with $10.2 billion.
