2 Page 2 President s Message By Josh Wilks Fellow Show-Me HFMA members, on behalf of the Board of your Show-Me Chapter, I would like to thank you for your membership and continued support. The 2017 annual Show-Me Chapter member survey will be arriving in your inbox on Tuesday, October 17th. This is a survey created by, and distributed, by National HFMA, and sent to all HFMA members. The survey gives the chapter leaders an opportunity to identify areas that are working well and need to be continued, as well as provide important feedback on opportunities to better meet your needs. If there are certain things you like about our chapter, share with us! If there is something you do not like, tell us that too, it s an important part of the process. The feedback, recommendations, and suggestions we receive from our members are very important, and assist us in planning and strategizing for the future so that our chapter continues to Thrive. As President of the chapter, I can assure you that the Chapter Leadership and I take the results very seriously. Once you have received this survey, we ask for your assistance with a favorable response, if you feel as though it is warranted. The chapter s goal is to receive Very satisfied and Extremely satisfied ratings. These are the two scores that count toward our satisfaction mark which National HFMA measures us on. Most importantly, these ratings reflect how we want our members to feel about the chapter. Your response is very important, and if you report a less than favorable response, our chapter leadership would like to hear from you to address your concerns. Please feel free to reach out to me at Joshua.wilks@claconnect.com or (314) or reach out to Susan Duncan, Chapter President- Elect, at sduncan@lakeregional.com or (573) to discuss any chapter issues or recommendations you may have. We sincerely look forward to the feedback, and our goal is to increase our participation over last year s improvement as we went from 16% participation in 2015 to 24% in Even at a response rate in the prior year survey of 24%, we know we are missing out on a lot of valuable feedback from (Continued on page 3)
3 Page 3 (Continued from Page 2) so many of you! For that reason, we are again offering an incentive for your participation. Similar to the last year, the Show-Me Chapter will draw for 3 $100 gift cards from the names of our members who complete the survey! The way it will work is after the first two weeks everyone who has completed the survey will be in a drawing for the first $100, then after the first four weeks everyone who has completed will be in for the second $100 and then finally after the end of the survey period everyone who has completed will be included in the last $100. So if you complete the survey in the first two weeks you have the chance to win three times!!! You can be assured this will continue to be an anonymous survey and no chapter leader will have access to your individual responses. National HFMA staff members will complete the random drawing for us and provide us the names of our prize winners. I would like to highlight some of the success the Show-Me Chapter has had over the past year: The chapter was recognized at the HFMA ANI conference for the Silver Award of Excellence in Certification and two Helen M. Yerger Special Recognition Awards in Improvement and Membership Growth and Retention The chapter earned a 80% success rate on the grading performed by HFMA national for the 2016/2017 chapter year Continued to provide high quality, low cost education related to revenue cycle, finance, and soft skills at our annual meetings and road show events Provided a Women s Leadership conference at the Spring meeting in St. Louis which was a great success The chapter is fortunate to have generous, involved, sponsors that enable us to provide education and networking to members at competitive and reasonable prices. Our sponsors are an excellent resource for members. The Show-Me Chapter, along with National HFMA, continually strives to bring value to our members through education, networking opportunities, and friendship. As I mentioned in the July newsletter, the chapter officers, directors, and committee chairs are working to provide you the most rewarding and valuable experience as a HFMA member. I hope you will take a few minutes to provide your feedback, and thank you in advance. Sincerely, Josh Wilks President, HFMA Show-Me Chapter

7 Page 7 Region 8 Connection... By Kyle Lee Hello to the members and friends of HFMA Region 8! Region 8 has had a busy summer and the start of fall is looking to be just as full! We had our most successful Mid-America Summer Institute (MASI) yet in August! Our fifth annual regional conference was held in Kansas City and was full of excellent programming, networking and collaboration among HFMA members! The 2017 MASI was so successful, the decision was made to continue to host the meeting in Kansas City through 2020! We feel strongly that one of the events our guests enjoy the most is the baseball outing. This year it was the Royals hosting the St. Louis Cardinals and everyone had an excellent time at the game. Keeping in mind that we want to continue hosting a baseball event as a part of MASI, we have chosen August 6-8, 2018 as the dates for our next regional conference. The Royals will host the Chicago Cubs on August 7. Mark your calendars now for next August for MASI18 you won t want to miss it! Your chapter s President and President-Elects have just completed the annual Fall Presidents Meeting (FPM) in Dallas. This meeting is an annual event in which HFMA initiatives and goals are shared and chapter leaders have opportunities to learn from others for the betterment of HFMA. There is much going on with HFMA on the national level and members will see many positive changes coming in the short and long terms. One of the immediate changes you will soon see is that we are moving to a new centralized registration platform, hosted by Cvent. As a member, this platform will be easier to navigate when you register for a webinar or conference and easier to accumulate continuing education hours. One of the main themes we heard at FPM is member engagement and the vision of how we continue to be the go-to source for healthcare financial professionals in this ever-changing time in our industry. Be watching for more information to be coming soon as HFMA continues to evolve to meet your needs! As we outline the exciting things happening at the regional and national levels, we should also recognize the local chapters and the great work that goes on within your chapters! There are some exciting meetings coming up this fall and winter! Our local chapters are usually the first introduction the member makes with HFMA and they provide excellent education and networking opportunities for you, our member. Whether you re new to healthcare and want to learn about the industry, you re a seasoned member and need a deeper dive into details of a specific segment or you re an early careerist looking for a place to plug in, HFMA is your place! Local chapters are led by tireless and enthusiastic volunteers who are always welcoming to members who wish to participate. I encourage you all to engage with your local leaders it can be as simple as attending a chapter meeting or volunteering for a committee. Believe me, you will get more out of it than you put into it! Thank you again for the opportunity to serve HFMA Region 8, the best region in HFMA!

11 Page 11 SHIFTING SANDS FOR MEDICARE PAY FOR PERFORMANCE Andrew Wheeler, Vice President of Federal Finance Missouri Hospital Association Medicare has been working toward a goal to tie quality to payments for some time. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act included several sections authorizing Medicare to begin implementing innovation and various pay for performance programs. CMS fully embraced tying quality to Medicare payments when they announced the Better Care, Smarter Spending, Healthier People campaign. Since many of these programs were put in place by the Obama administration, the way CMS ties quality to payments may soon change. The Trump administration has proposed the cancellation of the advancing care coordination through episode payment model and the cardiac rehabilitation incentive payment model, proposed significant changes to the comprehensive care for joint replacement model and has withdrawn the Medicare part B drug payment model. CMS has now released a request for information on a new direction to promote patient-centered care and test market-driven reforms. It is clear that the new administration wants to put their own stamp on quality and is seeking input from the healthcare community. Now is the time to help the administration create a path forward. CMS is accepting comments through 10:59 p.m. on November 20 th. CMS also recently finalized the federal fiscal year and proposed calendar year 2018 payment and policy updates. Major updates includes finalizing the transition of utilizing cost report S-10 data to distribute Medicare disproportionate share payments, the proposal to reduce certain drug payments purchased under the 340B program from average sales price plus 6 percent to ASP minus 22.5 percent and payment reductions for certain services performed in non-excepted off-campus provider-based hospital departments. The overall projected change in reimbursement for services performed in Missouri hospitals is an increase of 1.8 percent or $80,850,600.
