1 1 Chestnut News A Message from the Chestnut PTA President Hello Chestnut Families- September 2011 Important Dates: September 16th PTA Walk-a-thon 23rd - Ohio School Pictures 29th - Interims Family Pep Rally 6pm-7:30 pm October 6th - PTA Meeting 7 pm 11th Wellness Committee Mtg. 3:10 pm I would like to welcome everyone to Chestnut this year. This year PTA has planned many fun-filled activities for you and your family. We hope to accomplish these through your support. Please consider joining PTA, if you have not done so already. (A membership form is included in this newsletter, and may also be accessed at Chestnut s webpage.) There are several PTA Committee positions still vacant, on this year s Board.. They are: Family Fun-Night; Food/Cafeteria Rep; PTA Reflections; and Staff Goodwill. Please feel free to contact me at: , if you have any questions or concerns. 2 2 CHESTNUT NEWS A Message from the Principal Dear Families, North Olmsted City Schools is rated EXCELLENT!! Chestnut is rated EXCELLENT for the second consecutive year! We are very proud of the results from our school report card. Thank you for your partnership. The family reports were sent home Wednesday. In these reports you will be able to see how your child performed on all of the tests they took at the end of last school year. It will also give suggestions of ways to help in different areas. Please take a few minutes to review your child s results. It is also valuable to talk with your child about this information. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. As with any new year, we are working to identify the needs of our students to ensure the best possible results. Important Dates You can find all of this information by visiting our website at: (Selecting Chestnut under schools.) All of our information is posted and up to date. Our website is updated frequently. Study Island Pep Rally Sept. 29 th We will be hosting a family gathering that evening. There will be more information coming home. Yes!! We will be using Study Island again this year. This has been a great resource for our students to use in and out of school. Please encourage your child to use the program at home. We will be linking it to instruction at school. I would also encourage you to work with your child on the program. It will give you a good feel for what types of questions they will be answering during the OAA testing week. Parent PASS We will be using the online grading system. You will be able to check on your child s grades by going to or select the link on our homepage. The teachers will be updating the website every week. Sign-up If you have not yet signed-up to be on the list, or your address has changed, please go to our webpage Select Chestnut under schools and click on Please Provide Addresses. I will be updating my list frequently. (I delete all addresses every July. You will need to re-register your address every year, while your child is attending Chestnut.) Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions or concerns. I am open to your suggestions. These are difficult times we are in and I want to hear about what is on your mind. 4 4 CHESTNUT SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL/PTA PEP RALLY!!! To all Chestnut families: Your Student Council and PTA will cosponsor a Family night pep rally here in our back parking lot. We invite everyone to come, wearing your black and orange, to cheer on our Eagles. We hope to have a great evening of North Olmsted spirit! This event will be held on Thursday, September 29th, from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. This is the night before the North Olmsted Eagles game against Brecksville. It is a great chance for everyone to come together on a fall evening and celebrate our North Olmsted Eagle Spirit. We have invited members of the North Olmsted Marching Band, Cheerleaders, Flag team, Eaglets, and Football team. Hopefully, we ll have a great turnout, especially from the high school members who are former Chestnut students. We may also have performances by our own Chestnut cheerleaders. Chestnut football players are encouraged to wear their jerseys. The menu will include hot dogs, chips, drinks, and cookies. Pre-sale tickets will be available from Mrs. Kilbane for $2.00 per person. Tickets will be $3.00 at the door. All students must be accompanied by an adult. Please fill out the attached form and return to Mrs. Kilbane s attention with money to purchase your tickets. We hope to have a huge showing of families!!! See you there!! As mentioned earlier, we have just successfully completed our first ever Chestnut Walkathon,but there is still some work to do in reaching our fundraising goals this year. Please watch for the "fun" fundraising opportunities we will be offering including the Chestnut Kalahari Night in January and the Lake Erie Monsters game in December. More information about these events will be coming home in the next couple of weeks. We hope that you are able to support these efforts...but more importantly we hope that you enjoy the family time that comes with these events! 7 7 CHESTNUT NEWS Chestnut s Wellness Committee Please log-on to Chestnut s webpage: to print informational tips and guidelines for Healthy Habits. The Wellness Committee at Chestnut will be very active this year, promoting good, healthy habits, for our students and staff. Our first endeavor with PTA this year, was a fundraising Walk-a-thon, held on Friday September 16th. The staff and student body were given the opportunity to move-it for a good cause. Thank you for your generous support! If you have any concerns, please direct them to the office, or better yet plan on attending a Wellness Committee meeting held on the 2nd Tuesday, of every month. 8 8 CHESTNUT NEWS Chestnut s Student Council Is collecting Campbell Soup labels. Please clip the labels from your products and bring them to school. (Please see next page for list of products, or log-on to Campbell Soup s webpage). Company Donations 4 easy ways you can help our school earn money There are several companies that will give us money or educational items if we participate in their programs. These are super easy ways for you to help us make our school year a huge success. Please contact the chairperson if you have any questions on the following programs. Giant Eagle-Apples for the Students- Every time a registered supporter shops at Giant Eagle using their Giant Eagle Advantage Card, they earn points for your school. The points are saved and later redeemed by the school for educational tools. Points are automatically credited to your school through the Giant Eagle card. To support our school register at or call Our School ID# is Target Take Charge of Education- Visit Target or and apply for their Red card or a Target Visa card. Then enroll in the Take Charge of Education program on the Target website and our school will receive a check for 1% of purchases made at Target and ½% of purchases made elsewhere with your Target Visa. This is a great way to help us earn funds to support our programs. Box Tops for Education - Box Tops for Education can be located on many products. Clip these and save them for our contests. Several times throughout the year we will have a contest and will ask you to send in your box tops. Each box top is worth 10 cents. We can also earn more money by shopping through the Box Tops for education website. For more information on how you can help our School, check out the Box Tops website at: GFS Marketplace Welcomes Chestnut PTA to the Fun Funds Program - Information will be sent home on how you can enroll for a FREE FUN FUNDS membership card. Your purchases at a GFS store will generate a rebate check to our PTA. (The closest GFS Marketplace is east on Lorain Road by Baker s Square.
