1 JANUS NEWS Janus of Santa Cruz Newsletter January 2018 A New Year & Exciting New Services At Janus Janus of Santa Cruz welcomed in the New Year by opening two major projects: Incidental Medical Services (IMS) and our expansion of Drug Medi-Cal services for Residential, Outpatient, and Detox services. This means all of our program services, including Medicated Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Perinatal, are Drug Medi-Cal reimbursable. I am happy to report that, within four days of opening our expanded Drug Medi-Cal services, all Janus residential programs were completely full. While we anticipate process and workflow challenges, we are optimistic in being able to resolve all the anticipated issues in a timely and efficient manner. With IMS, Janus has partnered with Dr. Wasche of Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) to provide intake health screenings for our clients. Dr. Wasche has come on board as Medical Director for the Janus Residential (RTC) and Intensive Outpatient programs. This partnership, in addition to our IMS certification, will provide better healthcare services to our clients as we transition to a stronger medical services model of treatment. Eventually, a Janus staff member will work from Dr. Wasche s office to assist in drug and alcohol treatment referrals for PAMF clients. We have also broken ground on our RTC expansion project. The expansion will increase our bed capacity from 24 to 40 and includes a significant upgrade to our kitchen with a complete makeover that meets current commercial grade standards. This project was substantially grant-funded, thanks to the Central California Alliance for Health. I want to thank the entire Janus staff for all their hard work in identifying and applying for these many opportunities. 2 Department Spotlight: Janus DUI SC County Jail According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, 2016), 29 people die in alcohol impaired vehicle crashes every day in the U.S. that s one every 50 minutes. Janus DUI team Sobering members Center share a passion to achieve a bold mission: to reduce DUI recidivism in Santa Cruz County by educating, counseling and linking convicted DUI offenders to additional support systems as needed. Janus DUI does this by providing quality, evidencebased practices (EBPs) which help participants learn about making low risk choices. Janus has worked with the Prevention Research Institute (PRI) to measure the effectiveness of its evidence-based curriculum with the DUI population. Results show that clients who have participated in our Prime for Life (PFL) education program are showing statistically significant and positive changes around drink quantity identification, alcohol and drug related risk factors, intentions to decrease drug and alcohol use and the importance of making low risk alcohol and drug choices. A special thanks to our PFL facilitators Annette Webb & Matt VanNuys for their dedication and can do attitude during the launch of this cutting-edge program. Additionally, our Director of Research and Evaluation, Lisa Russell, has been an instrumental player with the launch and measurement of this EBP's effectiveness. Did you know that Janus DUI clients report high satisfaction rates (98%), quick enrollment times (99%) and a convenient location (95%)? Additionally, 100% of our clients report that their counselors encourage them to learn together and that their interactions with peers are helpful. Clients report that they complete their program with a detailed plan to avoid driving after drinking (97%) and also report that they are better able to cope with the urge to drive after drinking (95%). Clients completing Janus DUI programs report attending an array of services, such as 12-step meetings, counseling/therapy and treatment for substance use disorders (SUD). This is especially important, considering that 33% of our population self-reported meeting the criteria for severe SUD; scoring 6 or more DSM-V indicators based on the most recent survey. What s New at Janus DUI: Janus DUI has just launched a new resource center in Capitola, which is conveniently located across the street from the DMV. The goal of the resource center is to give clients a convenient one-stop-shop to help them earn their restricted license after getting a DUI as well as providing Ignition Interlock, SR-22 insurance and DUI program services in one convenient location. Janus Board of Directors Edison Jensen, Chair Alan Christenson, Vice Chair Kim Hogan, Treasurer Paul Bellina, Secretary Gail Kirby, Member Jenny Sarmiento, Member Dennis Kidd, Member Sister Julie Hyer, Member Sister Julie Hyer, OP As former CEO of Dominican Hospital, Sister Hyer brings over forty years of experience in the non-profit healthcare field to the Janus board. Her dedication to helping the Santa Cruz community is underscored by her experience working at local non-profit organizations, including acting for two and half years as President of Salud Para la Gente. Sister Hyer previously served on the General Council of the Adrian (Michigan) Dominican Sisters as Administrator, Treasurer & Councilor. In addition, she has served on many local, state and national boards. Sister Julie s vast experience with advocacy, fundraising, strategic planning, finance, and leadership promises to be a great asset to the Janus Board of Directors. Sister Hyer earned her BA in Mathematics from Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan, her BS in Medical Records Administration from Mercy College in Detroit and a Master of Business Administration from University of Detroit-Mercy. She has been honored with a multitude of awards, including the Hospital Council of Northern California Leadership Award (1992), the Sister Ann Joachim Award for Leadership and Community Involvement (1991) and an honorary Doctoral degree from Siena Heights College (1990). Dennis Kidd Mr. Kidd brings to the board over thirty years of experience in emergency public safety communications; first with the Huntington Beach Fire Department and then with Santa Cruz Regional 9-1-1, starting as a dispatcher in Serving as General Manager of the Santa Cruz Regional since 2011, Mr. Kidd has worked to develop programs that improve emergency response times and increase services to citizens in Santa Cruz County. He developed the county s first Reverse system and established a lifesaving Text to project that offers direct emergency communications from the deaf community and others in distress. Mr. Kidd also implemented PulsePoint, a state-of-the-art smartphone app that alerts citizens trained in CPR to respond to a nearby person in need of help in San Benito and Santa Cruz Counties. Mr. Kidd s vast experience in managing large budgets and working to foster exceptional relationships with local government officials and agencies promises to be a great asset to the Janus Board of Directors. Mr. Kidd earned his BS in Business Management and a Master of Public Administration from San Jose State University. He is active in the community, volunteering as a youth baseball coach and as a current sitting member on the Board of Trustees for United Way Santa Cruz.
