As the leaves are dropping continually now, a major job will be to sweep, rake and collect leaves to add to or create a leaf mould heap. Well -rotted leaf mould creates the finest, addition to any growing
2 2 of 5 29/09/ :34 medium if you wish to improve the soil structure and add vital humus and nutrients. A simple method is to collect your leaves and put in a black bin liner, tie securely and pierce holes around the base and sides. Store round the back of the shed/ corner of the garden until next year, when the contents will be transformed into compost. Other seasonal tips: Continue to harvest the very last Green tomatoes and ripen on a sunny window or make into chutney. Harvest Ornamental Gourds and place in an airing cupboard to dry. Lovely for mid winter decorative colour in the house. Stake Brassicas and earth up roots with topsoil or compost Firmly stake Brussel Sprouts. Plant out Winter Purslane and Winter Salad. Sow Broad Beans such as Aqua Dulce outside. Plant Garlic. Begin the big Greenhouse clean, empty all contents, wash and sterilise all walls, glass, benches and floor. Wash and allow to dry,all Greenhouse contents and replace where you can find them easily. Clear beds and plots of harvested plants and compost. In cold areas, mulch the plot heavily with leaf mould and cover with black plastic to This October is a big month for us, some courses have already started but there are many more still enrolling. Our new IT room will be opening which will allow us to deliver even more from Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CCBT) to IT courses. This facility is one of the results of our partnership with One Recovery one of our 28 partner groups who we re working closely with to provide a better tomorrow. We are also fast becoming a hub for Lancashire Women s Centres so people will be able to access the Mind Fit programme alongside counselling and therapy. Lancashire Wellbeing Service continue to do their wonderful work from the college through the 5 Ways to Wellbeing and offering support to people to deal with the underlying causes that are affecting their health and wellbeing. This work aims for people to feel included in their community, be able to live more independently and to enjoy a good quality of life. Their work over a series of sessions supports individuals to achieve their goals and find solutions to the things that might be affecting their life. If you ve not already booked a place, please try to enrol on the

This is delivered by the wonderful Brian Topping chair of Dementia Friendly Rossendale who is not only passionate about his subject but incredibly well informed and a great teacher. 4 4 of 5 29/09/ :34 WELLBEING: FOCUS FOR OCTOBER October 10 th is World Mental Health Day (WMHD) every year on this date, The World Health Organisation aims to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilise efforts in support of mental health. The theme for this year s WMHD is Psychological First Aid. In a global context, there is a need to ensure that when crisis events occur part of the humanitarian response is appropriate and timely mental health support. Crisis though is not limited to the things we see on the news. We will all, at one time or another, experience crisis from stress at work, the death of a loved one, life changing event or through experiencing a serious physical illness. Most of us are rescued by those close to us; we are saved by our friends and family or by our colleagues. Some of us though won t be this lucky, some of us won t have people to catch us when we fall or we won t be in a place where we can ask for help. So the theme for this section is a very Lancastrian, Y alright mate? It costs nothing to ask if someone is OK, it takes very little effort to help someone across the road. The random act of kindness of asking someone, Y alright mate? can be the difference between making it through today or not. So to keep ourselves well this month we will make time for those around us with a very Lancastrian, Y alright mate? which may be followed by a, D y need an and mate?
